Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Cask at Rattle N Hum in NYC. The pour is a flattish, room temp, clear orange amber with a medium, white fluffy head. Nice lace for cask beer. Nose is very assuming...regular Sculpin character: very caramel heavy, orange sections, sweet grapefruit, citrus hops. Nice balance. Would assume it is regular Sculpin if you were trying to prank someone. Taste...right up front it is silky, rich, and caramel heavy with quenching citrus hops and orange juice. After one second or so some major capsaicin heat comes through. HOT TAMALE TONIGHT! Ears on fire, clear your sinuses, phlegm building in the back of the throat. Still, nice vanilla and candy beneath the hot pepper. Even bitter dark chocolate still apparent. In summary, still recognizably a great IPA...still very Sculpin in essence but extremely spicy at near rip your head off levels as far as beers go. Hilarious, very enjoyable, I finished the entire pint very easily and had a blast doing so.

Served on cask at Alís of Hampden. A - Pours clear golden yellow with a nice one finger tall white head leaving light patches of lace down the glass. S - Smells of citric hops, spicy peppers and some light caramel sweetness. The hops are strong initially but the peppers really take over as it sits in the glass. T - Starts off with a nice citric hop bite quickly giving way to a light caramel sweetness and plenty of peppery spice. The first half of the glass wasnít too bad but the second half was all habanero spice. The spice sticks around long after the finish, lingering on the pallet for quite awhile. M - Compared to the regular sculpin this one is all peppers. The spice grabs hold of the pallet and never lets go. A touch of hop bitterness tries to break through but the peppers never really let it come out completely. O - I have wanted to try this one ever since I heard about it. I love sculpin but the peppers really drown out the best parts of the base beer. Glad I got to try it but I doubt I would get it again.

Dark amber in color, clear with a thin head. Big pepper aroma. The IPA hops are masked for sure the pepper and the hops blend well together and the peppers make for a very nice heat and flavor. Great Mexican food beer.

Drank in Denver for GABF 2012. I can see how this would get differing ratings. It is good, and it is exactly what they want it to be I think. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. Honestly, not a big pepper nose. The flavor though is initial sweep Sculpin but then a blast of heat and habenero. Lingers hot on the tongue. Cool to try.

Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, pine and hint of chili. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long extremely burning finish with hints of grassy and fruity bitterness. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On draught at Saraveza smoke fest. Pours a clear copper with foamy white head. Nose of hops and habanero. Smooth mouthfeel. Taste is first of sweet malt followed by hop and then dominated by habanero warming and flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft shared on tap at Aces and Ales 2 (Las Vegas, NV). Pours an amber orange hue, very healthy glow, faint haze. Frothy whitish head stays as a filmy layer, laces ok. Aromas are more hoppy, floral and grassy, touches of citrus fruit but more gentle. Faint pepper spice. Initial is lighter end of the fold, some spice and citrusy hops mix. A lighter body with some nice peppery spice that grows in a wave. Citrusy hops die out from the front end, with some gentle bread, faint fruit. Middle is spicy, pepper driven, earthy and a touch smokey, medium to firm heat spice. Backend is spicy, dry, and gentle bready malts. The pepper element is firm, stronger, but not ovewhelming for my palate (as a pepper fan admittedly). Some nice spice lines the throat and esophagus. Finis is spice, bready, dry. Some touches of lingering floral hops. Really integrated well. The pepper seemingly kills the hops.. Or maybe itís just an older keg and the hops have faded a bit. Either way, itís a very nice beer on itís own. Nice.

On tap at Aces and Ales 2. Pours a clear amber with a white head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has pine hops with underlying pepper notes and a backbone of earthy grains. Flavor has pine and grain up front with a strong finish of hot peppers.
