COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Tap. This is a novelty beer for me. It seems like a waste of sculpin because it has you focusing on the habanero and you lose the hops flavors. The spiciness it leaves behind in your mouth just seems wrong for a beer. Glad I tried a 4 oz sample. No need to do it again.

Draft at DryHop. Orange with white head. Very spicy beer. Way more than I thought. Tasty tho if you can fight that off

Aroma is citrus and spice. Flavor is overwhelming with spiciness a little over the top and takes away from hops. Not my cup of tea.

I was expecting this to be a pepper bomb. But this was well balanced. Lively citrus hop notes at first then the spice kicks in. Don’t know if I could do a whole pint but was much impressed.

Clear orange color with no head. Aroma of pepper, citrus, and hops. Lots of habenero upfront with citrus sweetness right behind it. Not sure what possessed one to add habenero to a very good IPA, but this works.

Pours hazy golden color with medium tight white head that laces all the way down. Aroma is sweet juicy flowery hops with no real hint of what is to come. Taste is dank hoppiness with biting grapefruit citrus and a nice malty backbone. Follow through turns to pepper heat and all else is lost from then on. I guess it is an interesting beer if you love the pepper heat or just something different in general. I’m a big fan of regular sculpin and I personally wouldn’t want to mess with it much. Overall kind of hard to rate as the pepper really takes over and that’s really all you get from then on. Starts off like regular complex sculpin and then blows up with heat.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Tried a sampler glass full of this. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is a combination of habanero pepper and west coast hops, laid upon a malt backbone. Taste is spicy. The habanero does overpower the hops, but by just enough to make the beer interesting. This isn’t something to repeat or even drink an entire glass of, but it is an interesting example of what can be done with the combination of beer and spice.

7/31/2014. On tap. amber color with a white head. Aromas are spicy with only hints of peppers. Flavors are caramel and pine up front, but the habanero sets in on the finish and warms all the way down. Not as hot and spicy as other similar brews. This one I can drink, but one is enough.

Bottle thanks to SantaSD. Light pepper notes in aroma, light earthy hop character, touch of caramel malt. Mildly hazy orange with off white head. Big heat on the first gulp, after heat subsides, some seet balance to the heat, malty, some earthy hop flavors, mild bitterness but must the heat comes through in the finish. Lingering heat in the throat. Not really much pepper flavor just spicy. Not a pepper beer fan but this has some sweet to balance heat but still quite spicy overall.
