COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

12 ounce bottle, bottled on November 19, 2014. Served in a DFH IPA glass, the beer pours an amber/orange color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both good. The brew smells like habaneros, citrusy hops (grapefruit, mango, orange peel), and a bit of sweet malt. I think the taste is pretty much like the aroma, except that the habanero heat overpowers the other flavors. Thereís also a lingering spicy peppery finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís coating and has a good amount of carbonation. Itís not the hottest beer Iíve had, but itís certainly hotter than most chili pepper beers Iíve tried. If you like spicy chili beers, then you need to try some of this. I wonít have any problems finishing this 6-pack!

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2014 Growler fill from Vintage Cellar, Blacksburg VA. Pours amber, very slight haze, good head. Aroma is hoppy on the sweet, fruity side of the street. Taste is hoppy, but the habanero jumps in quickly, leaving a lingering heat on the aftertaste. I love spice, so Iím thoroughly impressed with the balance here .. the heat level is just perfect for the beer. My house hot sauce is Tabasco Habanero (regular Tabasco is too mild), so I like spicy heat and I love this beer. Iíll have to get another growler fill before the keg disappears. Got the second growler and drank it with a brewer friend. The heat seems to get milder as you drink a couple of pints of this stuff. By the third pint, I barely noticed it was hot. Still impressed, I am.

Pretty good...well real good. A little too spicy for me but yet I can appreciate the craft on this. Fresh habanero flavor, with the great sculpin hop flavor and aroma.

From a bottle into a goblet. The pour is a slight hazy dark orange with no head. There is a spicy mango hop taste that is great!. Would drink again.

12 oz bottle from a six pack. Aroma is peppers, grapefruit, caramel, wet river rock--all a little more muted than I was expecting. Pours slightly hazy new penny copper with lots of sediment under a bone-white head that lasts a minute before fading into a ring. Taste is very hot, making the lips tingle (9/10 on a heat scale). There is a fair amount of hop bitterness--the heat couldnít completely squash the IPA character. Mouthfeel is perfectly creamy, tight carbonation, medium to full body. Nice pepper beer, but itís totally palate-wrecking. Not sure if Iíll be able to rate anything else tonight.

On tap in the gas lamp dist. Pours clear light carmel color with thin white head. Aroma is kind of muted from regular sculpin. Flavor is up front heat and hops. Coats the tongue but clears right after with just a lingering heat. I love the combo of ipa and spice. Great beer.

Bottle. Good grapefruit and floral citrus hop aroma with only a faint trace of the peppers. Pours clear golden colored with a large soapy white head with good retention and lacing. Starts with good grapefruit citrus and floral hops with the peppers slowly starting to build. Finishes dry with the hoppiness quickly overpowered by the strong habanero heat that lingers on the back of the palate for a long time, but oddly tolerable and refreshing. Good twist on an already excellent ipa.

APPEARANCE Ė color of dark golden ale. Pure white head has light & foamy characteristics and is persistent. NOSE Ė smells of a mild IPA. Not very fruity or resiny, itís well balanced and not terribly strong. FLAVOR Ė well balanced IPA in the front and all spice all the way down the throat. Very good example of an extreme chili beer. This by far packs the most heat Iíve tried (Stone Chipotle Smoked Porter, Rivertownís Death from Cincy, and other modest offerings. I have NOT tried the infamous ghost pepper beer yet). NOTES Ė Overall great beer. Thoroughly enjoy the IPA front and the heat in the back. Yet another excellent take on Sculpin from BP.

Tap at Gingerman. Hazy reddish gold pour. Citrus hops and pepper aroma. Nice clean malt with citrus hops and big spicy pepper taste. Really nice tongue numbing IPA.

12oz bottle. Pours orange with a frothy white head. Aroma is of hops, pepper, and citrus. Smells like regular Sculpin with pepper. Taste is of hops, citrus, and caramel malt. Has a huge backbone of spicy pepper. Surprisingly well balanced between the IPA characters and the pepper. Lingering pepper taste. Mouthfeel is very carbonated and soapy. It drinks very easy, despite the pepper taste. Itís just a solid IPA with a nice pepper heat.
