COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

12 oz bottle from a six pack. Aroma is peppers, grapefruit, caramel, wet river rock--all a little more muted than I was expecting. Pours slightly hazy new penny copper with lots of sediment under a bone-white head that lasts a minute before fading into a ring. Taste is very hot, making the lips tingle (9/10 on a heat scale). There is a fair amount of hop bitterness--the heat couldn’t completely squash the IPA character. Mouthfeel is perfectly creamy, tight carbonation, medium to full body. Nice pepper beer, but it’s totally palate-wrecking. Not sure if I’ll be able to rate anything else tonight.

On tap in the gas lamp dist. Pours clear light carmel color with thin white head. Aroma is kind of muted from regular sculpin. Flavor is up front heat and hops. Coats the tongue but clears right after with just a lingering heat. I love the combo of ipa and spice. Great beer.

Bottle. Good grapefruit and floral citrus hop aroma with only a faint trace of the peppers. Pours clear golden colored with a large soapy white head with good retention and lacing. Starts with good grapefruit citrus and floral hops with the peppers slowly starting to build. Finishes dry with the hoppiness quickly overpowered by the strong habanero heat that lingers on the back of the palate for a long time, but oddly tolerable and refreshing. Good twist on an already excellent ipa.

APPEARANCE – color of dark golden ale. Pure white head has light & foamy characteristics and is persistent. NOSE – smells of a mild IPA. Not very fruity or resiny, it’s well balanced and not terribly strong. FLAVOR – well balanced IPA in the front and all spice all the way down the throat. Very good example of an extreme chili beer. This by far packs the most heat I’ve tried (Stone Chipotle Smoked Porter, Rivertown’s Death from Cincy, and other modest offerings. I have NOT tried the infamous ghost pepper beer yet). NOTES – Overall great beer. Thoroughly enjoy the IPA front and the heat in the back. Yet another excellent take on Sculpin from BP.

Tap at Gingerman. Hazy reddish gold pour. Citrus hops and pepper aroma. Nice clean malt with citrus hops and big spicy pepper taste. Really nice tongue numbing IPA.

On tap at O’Brien’s’ pouring up via the Beer Engine with hazy gold to orange body and white head. The aroma has some sweetness and firm levels of Sculpin hoppiness with various citrus notes. I also get a mild background of chili pepper meat. The taste is Beer Engine smoothness and near creamy creating a Sculpin that is on the sweet side. It seems to start off a bit neutral in flavor with growing yet modest levels of sweetness and citrus before bold chili pepper burn and chili pepper flavor take over. The chili lingers and burns the lips for a good five minutes afterward. Darn spicy offering.

Sculpin flavor immediately up front then finishes with a fair amount of heat that for me never overpowered, though for others trying the same beer brought about sweat on the brow... I enjoyed it as an interesting addition to a ballast point event, though given the option again i will always choose the regular sculpin...

Draft at Mexican Food Factory Marlton. Pours out an attractive slightly more amber color than normal Sculpin with a nice white head. Aroma is of tropical fruits, citrus bitterness, and some light earthy/spicy chili pepper. Pepper is definitely subtle and maybe somewhat turns down the normal hop profile. Taste is where the peppers make their mark. Notes of tropical fruit and citrus hoppy bitterness, and then a spicy/earthy/fruity chili pepper (yes, the wonderful Habenero) comes into play. Luckily the spice is not over done, and despite the popular belief this pepper doesn’t only pack a lot of heat, there is a lot of flavor in there too. The hops meld rather well with the pepper that initially only leaves a slight burn, but definitely stings your lips for minutes after your sip...and if eating spicy food can linger even longer. A great rendition to one of my favorite IPA’s.

This poured a shiny bright orange color with an off white head. Aroma was just a great blend of spicey habanero peppers, accompanied by troipical and citrusy fruit. Flavor was blended really well, some of the hop character was covered by the pepper, but still made this a nice unique beer on its own. Prefect amount of heat to know its there but nto completely burn the throat. Really Nice.
