COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dubbed The Homework Series, the beers will be developed by brewers operating the aforementioned pilot system. The first batch of those brews is an India Red Ale—a hoppy 7% ABV beer given additional character and nice balance by substantial caramel malts—which Chandler pulled from his personal homebrew archives.

A Hybrid-Style Ale with a rich, Oktoberfest inspired malt base and a slamming hop profile, very similar to an India Pale Ale. CTZ (Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus) hops are added to the boil for bitterness, and copious amounts of Centennial hops are added during the late kettle hop addition and dry hopping post fermentation. In the Great American Beer Festival Style Guidelines there is a gap between the American-Style Amber/Red Ale and Imperial Red Ale. This beer fills this gap, whether you call it a Hoppy Red Ale or an India Red Ale, one thing is for sure…you will call it good.

Amber pour with an off-white head. Really great grapefruit and citrus hop nose. Big resinous pine notes, a touch of woody herbs, and perfume. Sweet caramel and toasted malt, too. Big citrus flavor. Tons of grapefruit, tangerine, and pine. Nice bitterness to counteract the sweet caramel and toasted malt flavors.

Bomber from CraftShack. Pours dark orange copper with a beige head. Aroma of mixed malts, maybe even chocolate, with a lot of hop. Citrus mostly? Med + body. Flavor is malty, hint of chocolate, and enough earthy fruity hop to bring dank to mind. Not really bitter bitter in the finish, but bitter enough to hold down all the malt. Lots of flavor in this ale.

Tap at the Ginger Man, NYC, 18/05/13. Clear copper amber with a thin beige head. Nose is floral hops, caramel, sugrs, bread dough, honey. Taste comprises caramel malt, hops, biscuit, sugars. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet finish with some bitterness. Decent enough.

Tap at Tony’s Darts Away. Clear amber to red pour with good tan lacing. Nose is sweet cherry cordial, dark chocolate. Spicy pepper and tootsie roll with red cherry and dusty bitter cocoa in taste. Neither sweet or harshly bitter. Finishes with a big pepper bite. Long, hefty, nutty bitter back end. Approaching tea tannic. Has herbal tea character though that doesn’t distract thankfully. All around drinkable for a style that I rarely enjoy.

Bottle. Mostly clear copper hued body with a medium sized just off-white head. Moderate retention, good lace. Aromas are of crystal malt, iced tea, piney and resiny hop character with mild citrus and dank notes. Floral, light ester. Grassy dry hop. Flavors are malty but somewhat dry. Resiny finish. Iced tea and crystal malts. Medium bitterness, relatively neutral balance. Medium-full bodied, medium to medium low carbonation. Grassy finish.

Bottle:   Coppery, clear, moderate frothy off-white head, decent lacing.   Hoppy nose, caramel, soft sweet pine, citrus peel, and a little breadiness.   Similar tongue, smooth and well balanced.   Comes across as a well made hoppy red.   Tastes fresh too!   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Soft citrus, pine, and tea leaves linger.   Enjoyable brew!   Thanks Ron!

"Oddly spicily hopped and malted...lots going on, some working together, some solo, some flavors seemingly pitted againts each other, but what you end with works. Not a lot to compare this too, even in the style. The only real flaw is the abv shows a bit, but it was definitely enjoyed."

Draft at Ginger Man with Max, James, Colin and Dave. Pours a deep amber red body with thin off white lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, vanilla and light booze. Mouthfeel is medium to creamy with lots of malt dominating the palate and some backing notes of vanilla, creme, sweet fruits and very light hop.
