JorisPPattyn (4490), Antwerpen, Belgium Apr 24, 2008 Draught. Syrah Barrel-aged ! Deep chestnut with small, dense yelllow-brownish head. Sweet-vanilla, somehow brandy notes (rather than wine), very good reforming the classical Doppelbock aromas. Slight sourish-winegrapey flavour, sweet-sour in PERFECT balance, and alcohol swarming faintly throughout. Ends long raisiny. Very full-bodied, slick, viscuous. WOW. No German would dream this up. This is where California shows real genius. RazingDreamz (123), North Carolina, USA Oct 25, 2005 I had this at a beer festival, and it blew me away. Really stood out among others. Really smooth, fruity, yeasty. Oh man. goldtwins (3738), Nesconset, New York, USA Feb 5, 2007 Tap @ homebrew shop. Poured a clear reddish chestnut color with a thin off-white head. Fruity aroma with notes of raisins covered by chocolate. The flavor was fruity with raisins, plums and chocolate. Dry finish with a light bitterness. DrunkAsASkunk (848), Lynnwood, Washington, USA Dec 7, 2002 Another one I sampled at the Strong Ale Festival. The aroma was a bit of a mystery to me here...i could smell a huge yeasty, hoppy content, but then again i got a good helping of coffee and mocha aroma’s. The colour poured a good deep brown with a thick, creamy head that lingered nicely. The taste is a bit generic i must admit for a dopplebock, but i definitely could feel the hops, some coffee/mocha mix, and some definite roastiness. Like i said, this one was a bit of a mystery but i like what they did with it. CaptainCougar (4663), Rockville, Maryland, USA Apr 15, 2007 Sampled at the brewery on 11/30/06: Transparent dark mahogany pour has a wispy-lacing tan head. Rich, sweet authentic dark caramel German malty aroma. Body starts viscous and sweet with good dark caramel malt and good lightly piny hops with a touch of lager yeast. A nicely-balanced and true-to-style doppelbock.
