3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
10/18/2014. On draft at Chuck’s 85th as part of a 4-Ballast Point beer sampler. Clear golden-brown color, medium amoount of head, mottled in appearance. Some lace on the sides. Bready, apricot aroma, some grassy hops. Flavor is mostly sweet, and a bit sour, not very bitter. Heavy, thick body, some alcohol burn, full mouth feel and long finish. Not particularly carbonated. Interesting beer.

"This version coming in at a whopping 12.4% and done well! Is it beer? Is it mead? Not too sweet, but the fruit and honey are front and center for sure. Smooth, tasty, and unique."

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
A malty aroma dominates. The flavor is strange, sweet malt to start with a syrupy apricot sweetness to follow. The finish is sweet and sticky. Lots of alcohol on the throat.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 19.06.2013, tap @ The Ginger Man NY:
Almost no head. Aroma is kind of neutral, fruity artificial strawberry like, grass, heather, alcohol. Taste is slightly harsh grassy and fruity, heather, grass, strawberries maybe, alcohol, hay. Medium bitterness and dry mouthfeel. Not a beer for me!

Hoooly moly. This supposed to be 10.7? No way. This an odd mix of fruit forward to medicinal. Medium bodied. Crisp. This thing is dangerous.

Poured from the tap a clear golden with a thin white head. Aroma was low but mostly citrus and apricot. Flavor was much less fruity than I expected but still had notes of the apricot and sweet malt caramel. Finish was sweeter with plenty of fruit flavors. One of the best apricot beers I’ve had.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cloudy peach and apricot – dense and hazy. White head fades into a small free floating puddle bordered by a full thick collar.
Massive notes of apricot stewed in honey. Peach and apricot brandy with spices. Green pears and green grapes are flambéed and caramelized in honey with just a touch of spice. Candied ginger on top. Sticky doughy honey rolls dripping with real honey.
Zow! Grabs back of mouth and tongue with tart apricots and honey. Oozes boozy green grapes, pears, and starfruits. Gentle parching finish of raw honeycomb and husked grains. Champagnesque – a bit dusky and dry in a good way. Candied ginger grabs the back of my tongue. Raw fermenting apricot musk, skins included for tannins, tartness, and earthiness. Peach and apple brandy infused with honey. Thick and rich. Nice warming alcohol warmth in the chest. More apricot after each swallow. Caramelized and boozed and spiced.
This particular beer is one for the books and absolutely one for the sipping. Wow. Sometimes styles are meant to be followed and sometimes styles are meant to be blurred. New and old all at the same time. If you have a chance to try this beer, please do. You may love it and you may not but the Old Barmy Ale demands savoring.
