Pitch black and opaque without any trace of lighter color. Two finger frothy beige head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap/ring. Excellent retention with sheets of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. Looks great. The aroma of this beer smells like coffee on Christmas morning. Prominent peppermint/candy cane character that tends to dominate the other characteristics but after it warms up a bit you can pick up the robust coffee and roasted dark malt notes. Vanilla is overpowered but there’s still some robust coffee bean, oatmeal and dark chocolate. Really unusual with a bit too much sugary candy at first but the nose is pretty inviting after it gets closer to room temp. Fuller end of medium body with a blast of icy peppermint sweetness. Tons of mint flavor that’s like liquid candy cans/thin mint/York peppermint patty. Sweet sugary candy and chocolate covered mint. candy cane mintiness overpowers much of the base beer but under the refreshing mint there is some robust smoked malt with hints of coffee, dark chocolate and oatmeal. These flavors cut through the candy sweetness a bit but the heavy mint flavor still dominates. Ridiculously refreshing and easy to drink with only a slight trace of boozy heat in the finish. I can see how this could be a bit too minty/gimmicky for some but I really enjoy it.

BP night at cap tap... Dark black with light tan head... Aroma is candy canes, peppermint hard candy... Overwhelms any coffee nose... Flavor is overwhelmingly candy cane and peppermint forward, some mild notes of coffee and roasted malts, maybe a little too much peppermint... Peppermint kick on palate... Decent, other varieties def better ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap @ Ballast Point Miramar. Black pour with a khaki head. Smells like chocolate mints. Sort of some coffee and brown sugar. The flavor is like brushing your teeth and drinking coffee at the same time. Chocolate, roast, and a lot of mint candies. Really a weird sensation.

George’s Bachelor Party September 2013. Pours a deep black with no head. Aroma is crazy candy cane peppermint. Overwhelming. Taste is not overwhelming peppermint but a nice compliment to the beer. Nice.

On draft, pours deep, rich black with medium beige head that lasted for awhile and provided plenty of lacing, aromas of wood, dark fruit, thin mints, peppermint, chocolate, and vanilla bean. Flavor is a great balance of spicy mint, chocolate roast, wood char, coffee, and tobacco. Medium bodied with a complex flavor. Great addition to the Victory at Sea lineup. Pairs well with girls scout cookie smokeables if you got em.

Cask at Hamilton’s Tavern for SDBW. Pours inky black, low foam. Nose is heavy peppermint candy, Andes mint chocolate. Taste is spot on mint chocolate chip, cooling mint in the mouthfeel. Successful cask version.

Pours a opaque black with a foamy tan head with good lacing. Aroma is of mint, chocolate, roasted malts, and some coffee. Taste is very similar to the aroma but also has some light vanilla and a more robust dark coco flavor. Has a medium body with a slighty watery mouthfeel and a semi bitter, medium finish. Overall, a very interesting version of v@s that is actually pretty tasty.
