Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a beige head and orange glints. Aroma is uncertain. Near med body. Flavor is mostly roast malt with rye spice. Finishes decently bitter. Certainly a very good brown.

Pours dark brown, finger off white head.
Smell sweet chocolate, hazelnut, rye and some vanilla.
Taste smooth brown ale with a bit of coffee, coco, and nutty.
Very smooth and creamy, medium body.

Draft at ncbc. Pours a murky dark brown with a loose tan head. Mild bready rye nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Nice toasty dark brown bread mid palate. Bread crusts on the finish.

On tap at Untapped Dallas. Brown with a tan head. The aroma has some toffee and chocolate notes as well as some rye. The flavor is more of the same. The spicy rye notes in the flavor complement the chocolate, toffee and caramel. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Pint on tap. Cloudy bastard, brown delta, no lacing, small head fades off to a collar, wow thereís some unexplained sediment in it, tasterís crystals. Rye bread taste, definitely bitter middle and aftertaste, but rounded taste overall with just a tad bit if fizzines, which isnít unexpected in the rye.

tap. Brown with small head. Interesting combination of a brown ale with substantial hops and rye. This works quite well. Quite tasty.

Dark brown-amber with a decent head. Nice Centennial hoppy nose with some rounded chocolate notes massaged in and then flecks of rye on the end. The body has some leafy bite to it with a strong rye presence. Sourish chocolate malt notes. Medium to full-bodied with a lingering floral hop and rye aftertaste rounded out by some dry, sweet chocolate dust.

Iíve been looking forward to a rye from Ballast Point, and am very pleased that this is a rye brown... what a great idea! Itís pretty dark brown in color with garnet hues and a thin, off-white head. It looks deep, complex, like a very private person completely unwilling to share anything about themselves to the outside world. But then you smell them... I mean, it. And itís surprisingly refreshing! A bright, rye-ridden sweetness shows a little robust chocolate in the nose. Itís really damn-good in the nose for as (relatively) unattractive as it is.
Itís more of the same in the mouth, with chocolate and roasted (but not bitter) malts ruling. There is an herbal, rustic spiciness about it that really brightens the palate. Itís effective similar to how coffee grounds would be, but not. Good job, coriander! Thereís a slight mintiness to it, especially in the finish. Itís light on the tongue, but thick on the mouth, heavier on the palate, and full in the gut, despite its light, inviting nose. Wow... itís different and wonderful. The best brown ale ever. Itís closer to a porter in flavor. Love it! Coriander + rye = happiness.

Immediately the aroma is good. Spicy hoppiness balanced by the smell of good brown beer. Then thereís the appearance, rich brown with a tan, foamy head. The taste is light cocoa, chalky, barley malt that isnít allowed to be to sweet because the hop bitterness smacks that would-be sweetness in the face! Brown ales are rad and this one is a bully.

In short: Rye beer crosses Brown Ale crosses IPA. Good beer.
How: Tap at La Taberna Lupulo, San Juan, PR.
The look: Clear light brown body topped by a large off-white head with good retention.
In long: Nose has a lot of spicy rye, toasted tobacco leafs, a light smoky character bordering burning cigarette. Taste has a good mix of caramel and spicy rye, toasted peanuts, generous leafy and citrusy hopping. The clean and sharp bitterness is quite assertive. This is a bastard beer that is as much a rye beer as it is a brown ale as it is an IPA. I liked it. And btw, I donít know if soberphobia is actually a thing, but if it is not a thing yet then guess what guys, I have invented soberphobia!!!
