Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a beige head and orange glints. Aroma is uncertain. Near med body. Flavor is mostly roast malt with rye spice. Finishes decently bitter. Certainly a very good brown.

Tap at Urban Solace in San Diego. Pours a clear amber. Thicker tan foam. Stickier lace. Nose is moderate cherry dessert. Taste is typical ballast Point vegetal oddities at the beginning moving to sweet dark cherry dessert. Silkier palate than expected from the rye. Great palate. Malt forward but not really sweet. Appearance is dull. Nose muted.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2012 On tap. Pours with a clear brown body with a tan head. Aromas are very spicy, coriander, mild phenol, earthy, fruity esters, pine and cola. Dry. Flavors area spicy, dry, phenol, coriander, dusty, chocolate, eucalyptus, nutty, rye. Medium bubbles, dry and crisp. Pretty good.
On tap at the brewery. Pours with a clear brown-bronze hued body with a small, off-white head. Aromas are rustic and toasty, rye, leather and crisp. Flavors are rye, crisp, biscuit, malty caramel, medium carbonation, crisp, spicy and nutty.

Draught Very thick creamy, cream-coloured head over almost black red-brown beer. USA hops and chocolate, nearly black IPA-like, bit of charcoal. Dry, but quite malty flavour; hops in retreat compared to the nose. "Charcoal" here seems to translate into rye. Mineral water quality, yet some body; slighlty slick. Refreshing brown ale - quite rare, certainly seen the coriander addition.

Draft at ncbc. Pours a murky dark brown with a loose tan head. Mild bready rye nose. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Nice toasty dark brown bread mid palate. Bread crusts on the finish.

In short: Rye beer crosses Brown Ale crosses IPA. Good beer.
How: Tap at La Taberna Lupulo, San Juan, PR.
The look: Clear light brown body topped by a large off-white head with good retention.
In long: Nose has a lot of spicy rye, toasted tobacco leafs, a light smoky character bordering burning cigarette. Taste has a good mix of caramel and spicy rye, toasted peanuts, generous leafy and citrusy hopping. The clean and sharp bitterness is quite assertive. This is a bastard beer that is as much a rye beer as it is a brown ale as it is an IPA. I liked it. And btw, I don’t know if soberphobia is actually a thing, but if it is not a thing yet then guess what guys, I have invented soberphobia!!!

Growler from the Home Brew Mart. Man I wish I lived in SD. Nose if nice and roasty with notes of chocolate and spicy rye. Nice hoppy notes as well. Citrus and floral hops are present. Brown pour with a beige head, some reddish undertones. The flavor starts with a little roast and chocolate and is followed by citrus and floral hops - a nice medium bitterness on the finish and a rye note that is noticeable throughout and compliments the primary malt base very well. Easy drinking tasty stuff.

Nice copper brown with a fizzy off white head. Crisp citrus aroma and taste with some subtle nutty notes.
