April 15th, 2012 - Ballast Point’s dry hopped beer shines even in the relatively dim tasting room attached to the home-brew shop, with a clear, fall foliage golden and brown glow, made brighter by the head that pops up and then vanishes well before the first sip. The aroma is brilliantly fresh, like walking around and through fresh hop vines and wiping the resin on my nostrils. The taste is also lovely, with an elusive sweetness that’s somewhere between rosewater and sweet cream. A lighter weight palate with lower carbonation puts extra emphasis on the freshness of the hops notes, which embrace the tongue lightly, but deliver a clean, staccato hoppy bitterness. However, the hops plays second fiddle to that delicate sugar flavor in a confounding, but incredibly pleasant way. This is, again, one of those incredible beers that outshines Ballast Point’s bottled brews, but one that stays home at the taproom.

On draft at Tap 25. It pours a clear golden color with an off white head. The aroma is floral with some orange and grapefruit. The flavor is mild with a silky, full mouthfeel. Lots of big floral hoppiness with some smooth notes of oranges and light tropical fruit. Very nice.

Growler from Save On. Bright clear gold with lasting head and lotsa lace. Citrus rind with a little fruit aroma. Mild unripe peach fruity sweetness and a hint of crackery malt with assertive grapefruit rind bitterness and very dry finish. Light but not watery. Excellent. I could drink this all night...and I think I will.

Pours copper with white head and tons of lacing. Aroma is average strength, but the taste is loaded like a hop cannon. This is a pale ale? Wow. Tons of piney, earthy, and slightly citrus hops with caramel malts.

Tap at SAMs. Pours hazy orange amber with a steady medium sizes meringue off white head. Nose is very fresh, thank you 9lb 8oz baby Jesus, with some notes of Meyer lemons, guava, papaya, florals. Really interesting and different profile than almost any ipa I have ever had. No resin at all-a super soft bitterness. Super easy drinking. Wow, I wonder how they made this happen. The hops used seem like many of the usual suspects. Definitely one of the best low abv ipa’s (<5) that I have ever had.

Draft from Vintner. Holy shit what a hoppy pale ale. Strong, refreshing, easy drinking. Nose is full of citrus and hops, some grapefruits - smells basically like a hop vine. Taste is similar, bitter, tangy, refreshing, really solid. I could drink this any time, but only if its fresh. I am loving the fresh beer trend I have been seeing.

Draft at Dutch’s. Pours a hazy dark golden amber color with a medium sized white head. The aroma and flavor have light caramel malts, toasted bread, grassy and earthy hops with mild to moderate bitterness to the finish. Dry and light to medium body. Decent, but I would like to see more flavoring hops.

Draft. Poured clear dark amber hue with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy aroma of complex hops. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Well balanced flavor hops with a medium bitter finish of moderate duration. This is a solid drinkable brew.
