Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.

So, on the back of the trend of adding citrus flavours to an already citric hopped beer (?), I thought I’d jump on this gravy train still flying off the shelves here in Oz. Into a snifter, chilled. Bright, orange gold with fine carbonation and a frothy white crown. Nose is of very clean, ripe grapefruit and orange pulp atop a musk-like perfume and hints of whizz-fizz™ powder and strawberry hubba-bubba™. Lightweight but rounded with a little burn on end by the alcohol and peaking hop bitterness. Heavy citrus offers it a rough edge amongst a backbone of candied fruit like the aroma. Light pine but little malt. Strawberry, tangelo and orange with ample grapefruit in the finish where it drops off quickly. Carbonation is spritzy allowing it to bounce across the palate. The perfume builds but is is balanced well between supple fruit sweetness and tang and pungent grapefruit tartness and bitterness. This is not an in your face beer but it is tasty and highly sessionable even at 7.0% ABV. I love the original Sculpin and personally think this sits a little in its shadow rather than beyond it. Orange gold hue with nice dense white head. Citrus nose, some sweetness. Full mouth feel and definite grapefruit flavor. Not particularly subtle but not overwhelming either. Hops are prominent which also balances the mall and grapefruit flavor. Another fine product from the boys in San Diego

BP has really nailed it with this sculpin series as long as you don’t mind the fairly high ABV. The addition of grapefruit just doubles down on the hop characteristics already there, while not going overboard. Delicious.

I love grapefruit kick in my IPA, but this one is outstanding! Fresh, all the way grapefruity, never stepping down, some passion fruit, pine. Decent malty background. Moderate bitterness with light sweetness Balanced and super enjoyable

UPDATED: JUN 23, 2016 Taster at Brothers Beer. Really fruity, sweeter than anticipated. Could have a little more grapefruit, but is definitely delicious.

Tap at el Bait Shop. Notes of the grapefruit and some pine. Taste of sweetened grapefruit. There is some definite passion fruit and a bit of black pepper bite.

Glass at ballast point brewery. Pours a light Amber. Hops and grapefruit mesh really well. Nice.

355mL bottle from Dan Murphy’s. Clean deep gold body, creamy white head persists. Decent intensity aroma - lifted citrus, piney hops, toasty malts in support. Full body, holds its weight really well, slightly creamy sort of carbonation. Spicy, citrus, quite juicy, toasty, almost like a tropical cocktail of sorts in a weird sort of way... firm bitterness but really well balanced overall, Nice beer, touch gimmicky to be honest, but it works.

Flaska.
