Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

bottle, from Sam’s Quikstop. Great aroma, sweet, tangerine, lime, apricot, peach, peppery. Golden orange color, good head, ok lace. Bitter sweet flavor. Medium body, oily creamy mouth feel, bitter dry finish. Very nice ipa. Aroma was great, could sniff that all day, aroma turned a little more grapefruity anf lost alot of the peach type aspects. Still very good, glad I asked while I was there because I walked right by it.

22oz. Bomber. A little lighter color than expected would call it something similar to straw colored with a quickly disspearing white head. Crazy big nose that seems to be dominated by amarillo hops. Heavily tropical with hints of peach, mango and even a little melon. Flavor is similar with a strong grapefruit presence and a caramel note that is backed by a nice bitter streak that hits late. The malt is definitely there, but a bit understated to let the hops stand out. Mouthfeel is slightly thin, but not watery. Ends with a lingering bitterness and a touch of resin. Teetering on the border of a 2IPA. Impressive.

Bottle. Pours out a clear slightly orange hued golden color with a small white head, solid carbonation. Aroma is out of this world, pine, citrus, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, resiny hops and a very slight sweet caramel note with a solid mouthfeel. Taste is complex with a lot of different flavors going on, citrus hops, grapefruit, some pine, mango, pineapple, some slight caramel sweetness and a nice bitter finish. World Class IPA.

Draught at the brewery. Gold with a white head that laces the glass well. The aroma is one of the most intense hop blasts that i have ever stuck my nose into. Pine, peach, apricot, and mango are just HUGE in the nose. The flavor has the same gigantic juicey hops but a relatively low bitterness that perfectly balances the bone dry malt. Speaking of malt flavor, you’d struggle to pick out much if anything through the hop juice. Medium, almost light bodied with medium carbonation. This is really a hop paradise on tap. I had a bottle a couple days after sampling it on tap, and while excellent (maybe a 4.2) it didn’t quite live up to sucking this nectar right out of the brewery’s tap. Very similar to Pliny in that freshness is the world.

Tasty, hop-oriented "ipa" nearing DIPA I hope, because its juicy piney grapefruity goodness is got to be nearing that territory. Pours a light tan wheaty looking pour with minimal white head. Nose is straight citrus hop. Flavor similar but with a more IPA oriented deadness where the DIPA becomes more potent in its hop profile this one wears off quick. Very drinkable and very good IPA.

Heavy on the grapefruit both on the nose and on the palate. I just happen to like this style. A little low on the suds, not overly carbonated. Amazing to squeeze so much flavor out of a regular 7% IPA. It’s tough to compare but with a bigger malt back bone and more hops ypou get into Hopslam territory. One very decent and hard to get brew, but worth the effort.

Bottle shared with Sparky27...THANKS ERIC!!! Amazingly balanced IPA...24 karat pour with a dense 1-inch ivory head that left a significant amount of lacing. Ripe grapefruit, orange rind, and lemon zest in the nose. Fresh and fruity flavor that is bright and exhibits just enough caramel to offset the citrus and pine. Medium mouthfeel...top-notch in its style.
