Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bomber with much love to gorditoabd. Body is a golden orange, while head is about a finger of froth. Aromas are simply lovely... a nice mix of citrus and tropical fruit: lemon and mango come to mind, but it seems a little like cheating using descriptors from the description. I can also pick up a little grapefruit and just a hint of pine in there. Flavor is simply fantastic! A lovely mix of the elements from the nose, but even more full than I would have guessed. This is a fairly interesting IPA in that the fruit flavors seem to be much more tropical and sweet than citrus. Still, they are well balanced and the malt stays away from the cloying sweetness. In sum, this is a crisp and very well made IPA.

22oz bottle. Pours orange with a foamy white head. Lots of carbonation. Aroma is of oily hops, grapefruit, pine, and caramel. Taste is of very oily hops, lots of citrus, and pine. Has a very nice caramel malt base. Also has big characters of honey and grass. Has a very sharp alcohol bite that lingers long after each sip. Lingering oily hop and honey taste. Mouthfeel is heavily carbonated. Very enjoyable beer, but way too damned oily.

Thanks to Cletus for thiis. Pours a deep yellow orange with thick off-white head. Aroma is very refreshing of citrus and ever so slight floral hops, some sweet fruits, and grass. Flavor matches very well and is quite a nice brew to drink. Just wish I had this available to me.

Bottle courtesy Doboy, shared with my brother.Clear gold with a smalish off white head. Huge grapefruit aroma with lots of pine resin build on a base of toffee and honey. Medium body and carbonation, quite resinous as expected, very dry palate. Fleeting malt sweetness gives way to an assertive bitterness that extends into a lengthy dry finish. This is one big, bad IPA.

Bottle from Turdferguson. Pours an orange color with a thick frothy off-white head. Heavy lacing. Citrusy hoppy aroma escapes as soon as the bottle is cracked with a lot of grapefruit and a lesser pine scent. Citrusy, grapefruit, orange, lemon, this pretty much tastes like you think it should after smelling it although perhaps not quite as sharp as the aroma indicates. Probably because it’s so easy to drink and refreshing without huge bitterness. A very good IPA. Thanks Sam!

I only let this sit for a week before I could resist the urge to open it. West Coast IPAs seem to lose something even when chilled and I wanted the best experience possible. I don’t know how much this costs in California but if it were regularly accessible I may just buy it on a semi-regular basis.

Aroma / Appearance - The transparent golden body and stark white head formed a picturesque decoration on the coffee table. Bright and grassy, the nose was fruity with the main aspect being canned mandarin oranges.

Flavor / Palate - The hoppy bite grabs you from the first sip and is consistent throughout. A mixture of grass, pine needles, flower petals, and citrus it sits nicely on the tongue. Despite being 7% ABV this was not tough to polish off as spring transitioned to summer.

pours a deep yellow. very citrus nose with some pine and floral hops mixed in. Flavor is much of the same. A bit biting at points, but the malt flavors even things out. Finished dry with some fruit tones. Very good beer.
