Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Flavor is sweet and floral with notes of citrus, sweet caramel, apricots, fresh fruit, some hints of honey and pine. Generally medium body with a pleasing hoppy finish.

This poured a cloudy light orange color with a pretty big white head. Aroma was just freaking awesome, lots of citrus hops, some piney notes as well. Just fresh hops. Flavor was much the same, very pungant fruity hops, some peach notes, pine at the end, and then a rather dry distinguished finish. I wish I had more of this stuff!

22oz Bottle. Noses with a lemony Simcoe heavy aroma. Catty. Pours a very clear pale yellow, with a foamy whitish. Flavor is sticky, fruity, juicy and fresh. A fresh, piney snap of fresh foam filling out the balance. This is classic and juicy. Dry finish. A prototypical West Coast sticky IPA.

courtesy of tpd975. pours golden, white head. Aroma and taste, hoppy, citrus with notes of pineapple, some floral hops. Not my fav IPA style, too much hops bitterness up front, still highly drinkable. re-rate, lots of hops, grapefruits, with nice malt balance but still with hops giving the beer a nice warmingpalate.

Thanks IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours clear yellow with a white head. Nose is grapefruit, orange, some pine, and a big caramel backbone full of malt. Flavor is similar with lots of caramel and grapefruit, and some pine. Flavor finishes off with lingering hop bite. Interesting.

22 oz bomber acquired via trade. Poured out a nice orange tinted amber with a finger and a half off white head. Solid aroma of grapefruit, pineapple, orange and light pine. Flavor much the same with a little bit of caramel malt to balance it out. This one was a few months old and still damn tasty, I need to get my hands on a bottle when it’s fresh!

Orange-amber pour with a two-fingered, frothy white head. Very sticky lace. Awesome hops blast up front with fresh squeezed grapefruit and pine juice. Flavors of lemon pith, ruby red grapefruit, pineapple and pine resin. A good portion of caramel malt for a complimentary backbone. Good body, nice balance with a strong, lingering, bitter finish. This brews most significant feature is its freshness. Not bad at all.

Thanks to JCB for giving me a bottle from North Carolina. Clear amber with a medium head. Aroma of pineapple, grapefruit, papaya and oranges. I know a lot of IPA’s are fruity, but this kicks it up two notches. It’s a veritable fruit salad in a glass! My wife agrees (that it smells of fruit), and usually she doesn’t like hoppy beers. Lite tasting malt and dry. Dry, fruity finish. OMG. I’ve gotta try this on tap!
