Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of hops and medium notes of elderberries and grapefruits. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of caramel, as well as medium notes of malt, grapefruit, and elderberries, leading to a dry and bitter finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

2009 Bottle - Thanks Snojerk321! - Poues dk yellow with a medium white head...aroma is massive citrus, little malt...flavour is similar, I was looking for more malt, but had to remind myself this was not an IIPA, great bitterness that lingers just the right length, good alcohol...very nice!

This stuff is chocked full of grapefruit; grapefruit until the cows come home. Surprisingly light on the palate for all of it’s flavor, but it doesn’t suffer any for it. On the contrary: it keeps it from getting syrupy. Superb.

On tap at the Thirsty Monk. Pours slightly hazy gold with a great foamy white head. This is certainly hoppy. It is a predictable but welcome delivery of citrusy hops. This one brought Avery’s IPA to mind, just a little more balanced and a bit lighter on the palate. This is refreshing for the style with plenty of grapefruit and juicier citrus flavor. Malts are just sweet enough and not too thick. I’d drink this on a regular basis if I could.

Slight hazy gold pour. Thick off white head a thick drippy lace. Piney aroma. Light citrus notes, grapefruit and pine. Big malty backbone which is perfectly balanced

Pours gold into a shaker. Off-white head with excellent retention craters and recedes leaving sheet lacing. Summer fruit, resin and pine aromas. Crisp and well balanced with apricot and resin from front to back. Dry lasting grapefruit finish.

Let me just say, I don’t know how this is rated any less than pliny. It’s hard to tell the difference. Pours a clear golden with a white head that turns a little rocky. A solid IPA, just the right amount of alcohol, pine, resin, and grapefruit.

Very piney scent but not an overpowering piney taste well balanced. Nice frothy feel a and nice bitter finish. Not the best but its a great single.
