Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle at Ballast Point during the RBSG Pub Crawl Tour on 08/01/2008. Clear golden body with a large frothy off-white head. Big spicy hop aroma. Huge spicy hop flavor with light caramel. Medium body with medium carbonation.

Bottle: (Thanks puzzl!) Nice cloudy glowing orange pour with a tight off white head. Sweet aroma- citrusy resins with some butterscotch sweetness and a cookie-like-malt note. Light feel with a fairly sweet flavor. Some subtle butterscotch gives way to later piny citruses and a late dry/resiny finish. Decent IPA, could be better with less sweetness.

RBSG 2008, from the bottle at the brewery. Pours gold with a smooth white head and thick lacing down the glass. Floral pine hop nose, soft citrus notes, but the pine took over. Very nice balance with a fruity caramel malt base and the earthy pine hop finish, soft tropical fruit notes find their way into the finish.

Big fresh hop aroma with nice minty notes. Rich buttery hop in the flavor with basil and carroway. The hops are bright but very bitter, not highlighting enough citrus or resin for me. Pretty tough to drink with a bitter finish.

Pours with a large, rocky, yellow tinged head covering a hazy yellow body. Aroma of apricot, pine, mango and some caramel. Taste is pine bitterness with some exotic fruit. Syrupy with lively bubbles...have since had on cask...this stuff is awesome!

Bottle sampled at the brewery for RBSG 08. Pours a clear gold, with a light white head. Citrus hops aroma, both sweet and bitter, with nice fruit notes. Taste is clean, bitter, and hoppy. Lingering clean bitterness. Very refreshing and tasty IPA.

Bottle poured at the brewery during RBSG 08. Golden color, tightly packed white head, good lacing. Caramel malt aroma with accents of tropical citrus and stone fruit. Flavor is cakey malt, orange, grapefruit, and pineapple, with a solid bitterness. Long dry finish, extremely drinkable.

Bottled at Ballast Point. Poured a nice shade of medium golden with a creamy cap of white head. The aroma was juicy with pears, grapefruit, and pineapple represented.. just enough malt to balance, but the hops definitely steal the show. Soft bread and toffee wash over the tongue with building bitterness toward the edges (juicy grapefruit and pine primarily).. excellent balance. Juicy and well-presented on the palate with bitterness riding the finish for a good couple minutes. Fantastic!
