Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

(22oz. bottle) Pours a clear orange body with a medium-sized off-white head. Fruity aroma of apricot, pineapple, peaches, and grapefruit. Flavor of apricot/floral/citrusy hops, toastiness, and caramel malt with a lightly syrupy mouthfeel.

22oz bottle, courtesy of WeeHeavySD. Thanks, Jon! Pours a bright, yellow-orange color; off-white head with solid retention and medium-bubbled lacing. Cat pee, citrus, and resiny overall hoppiness in the aroma; slightly watery on the edges; lemon rind and clean hop expression. Medium carbonation. Medium mouthfeel: resiny, clean citrus and catty hop bitterness; some cheese and sugar. Medium finish (lots of mediums), showing resiny citrus and grass and sugar.

Courtesy hopscotch. Pours a crystal clear gold, with a small white head. Smells of big juicy citrus hops, some weed, grass, and grapefruit. Big and bold nose. The flavor is pretty big on the hops as expected, with a decent malt presence for some balance. Definitely a little more piney than fruity, although there was some grapefruit in there as well. Very good IPA, almost felt like a double to me.

Bottle thanks to Ken! Huge nose of sharp mandarin oranges - fruity, juicy, full, wow... has a definite fruit juice sugar character to the nose - while the body is thick and syrupy and frothy while still pretty crisp and sharp... resinous pine and catty simcoe hops round out a big IPA that’s not too big. Very good stuff.

This is a really really nice beer. Aroma is strong simco and almost cat urine (I just love cheesing!) Flavor is strong citrus with almost canabis flavor and potency. This is one fantastic beer. Finish is smooth and a bit drying but not dry. Very nice.
