Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle; picked up yesterday. Poured a rich gold; carbonation streams; lacing; compact, medium sized white head. Huge, pungent aroma; grapefruit, melonand citrus, with some pine,, toffee and buttered bread. Great aroma. Had a sample on cask yesterday, but I definitely like it from the bottle today better. Powerful hop presence, as expected. Sweet caramel beginning that gives way to grapefruit and pine. Some buttery, biscuit in the middle. Very nice balance and just an overall really good beer. Up there with the best of the style.

Pour is clear orangey amber with a thin off white head...smell is super piney....super piney....taste is not nearly such a hop bomb...a sweet toasty caramel flavor with a solid hoppy backbone....not bitter, but definitely flavorful...resin...

9/10/2008: Ballast Point Sculpin IPA is cloudy, copper-colored, and has an off-white to beige head that offers quite a bit of lacing. It has a floral aroma that is also filled with pineapple. There is a floral hop flavor, perfume, and a toffee bitterness. There are also flavors of tangerine and lemon pell. The beer is medium-light in body and has a good body and flavor. Overall this is a nice IPA.

5 ounce sample tasted at Bistro’s IPA fest. Very pleasant floral, hempy, orangey, tangerine hop aroma. Light pine aromas also burst through. Extremely aromatic and totally quaffable. Transparent golden body with frothy off-yellow head that is relatively perseverant. Wow. Lots of hempy, resiny flavors to start. Becomes nice and malty and quite chewy in the middle. Finishes orangey, bitter, juicy, and wonderfully hoppy. Great shit. The appearance could be a little darker, but that’s nit-picking.

On tap. Clear golden in colour with a small head. Hoppy and spicy with notes of pine and flowers. Quite bitter, a bit sweet with a dry aftertaste.
