Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle sampled on 5/5/08: Pours a transparent orange bronze with a stringy-lacing white head. Aroma of fresh resiny grapefruity hops and a nice, pale malty sweetness. Starts with good fullness and sweet caramel flavor with a crisp, citrusy flavor and bittering hop balance toward a refreshing bittersweet finish. A very nice and drinkable IPA.

Sampled on cask at O’Briens on 11/30/06: Pours a clear hazy golden bronze with a well-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet pale malt with lots of fresh grapefruity hops. Body starts with a nice, full pale and toasty caramel malty sweetness along with lots of fresh floral piny hops toward a crisp, clean, very drinkable finish. A nice IPA.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, hop juice, pine, tropical fruit, grapefruit, resin, citrus, and tangerine. Poured amber/orange in color with a medium-sized white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Good lacing. Light to medium sweet, heavily bitter flavor. Tastes of hops, pine, caramel, hop juice, pale malts, and tangerine. Medium body. Sticky, dry texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, hoppy, dry finish. One of the more bitter beers I have had of late.

It’s already been said but this is a great IPA. Really bright citrus taste with a little metallic hops residue on the finish. Crisp with not a lot of malt. Good stuff.

@ the homebrew store - Straight clear gold, thin white creamy head. Nose was just freakin loaded with pine, pine needle, pine resin, pine everything! Oh yeah, just a hint of grapefruit I suppose. Deep bitter flavor from start to finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, super hoppy finish. Any sign of sweet malt would have upped the score even more, but I personally always dig a good hop bomb...

Bottled at Papsoes Blind tasting 19th. June 2008 no 27: Pine, herbs, flowers and citrus in the aroma. Flavour is sweet, herbal, has light caramel, flowers and pine. Meidum to full bodied. Dry. Medium to strong bitterness in the end. Is quite balanced. High drinkability.

Bottle thanks to doubleo. Pours fairly clear copper with frothy white. Huge pine/citrus nose. Flavor is all pine with back notes of grapefruit. Nice bit of sweetness that tries to round it out, but who cares, this a well made hopped up IPA!

Clear, strongly-hued sunshine yellow. Very sharp, dank, resiny aroma. Tangerine, orange zest, basil (?!) - all come through in very modular, defined aroma. Thinnish, elegant but dusty maltiness, anchored by rich notes of mango, tangerine and cantaloupe. Creamy, judiciously carbonated finish.
