San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2014 Bottle: Dull, golden-yellow with some orange hints, hazy throughout with a creamy and fine, eggshell-colored head showing decent retention and leaving back some chunky lace. Aroma is a hop-garden; grapefruit, floral notes, pungent, semi-sweet juicy citrus, pineapple & mango, perfumes, roses, wet flowers, white pepper. Very nice. Taste is a grapefruit and floral hop bomb. Mango, pineapple, tropical fruits abound... Rose petals, perfume, leaves, grass, good wave of bitterness on the tongue. Very light cracker malt allows the hops to shine. Very good IPA, here. The "Two-Hearted" of the West Coast, if you will.

Draught @ Tørst, NYC. Pours slightly hazy golden with stable off-white head. Clear aroma of hops with regular notes of citrus and grass. Intense, bitter flavour of hops with grassy and citric notes. Lingering hoppy aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Perfectly balanced. A fantastic IPA.

Pours a clear golden amber color with a thin white head. Super fruity aroma with lots of mango, pineapple, citrus, and apricot. Similar flavor profile--explodes with juicy fruit madness and a sharp bitter hoppy edge. Complex, but straightforward. Medium to heavier body. Slightly slick finish. Awesome stuff, it’s very very easy to get used to drinking these.

Flaska från Systembolaget. Bärnstensfärgad vätska med högt vitt skum. Grape, mango och tallbarr i aromen. Perfekt balanserad beska/sötma. De tar ut varandra fullständigt på gräns till torr smak. Kort eftersmak.

Beautiful beer. I could put mouth under tap on this one. Ipa tops piney pops the hops then settles so nice. A new taste unplaced but great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Först ölen jag testar från Ballast Point. Hade höga förväntningar och dem infriades! Extremt välbalanserad IPA. Sticker inte ut på något sätt, men är väldigt komplett. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle poured into a Pint glass Standard pour, two finger off white head. Deep copper, darker than most IPAs I’ve had, with light but lively carbonation and little opacity. The head takes it’s time to settle back in. Beautiful aroma of grapefruit, with citrusy and floral notes. Well balanced taste, with the bitterness biting first, followed by a pleasant sweetness. Grapefruit and sugar. Medium bodied. While the balance is great, I prefer a bit more bitterness in my IPAs. This would be wonderful for someone who likes them with more sweetness. No bottling date, perhaps the hops have faded? I’ll be sure to try this again when I find it on draft, for now it’s an enjoyable IPA, but doesn’t find it’s way to the podium of those I’ve experienced.

Canned 6/26/13 and picked up at The Beer Temple in Chicago. Oh, how I’m looking forward to this... Appearance: Pours with a massive four finger soapy head that stays for quite awhile. Sculpin has a pretty clear light amber color. The lacing is fantastic. Excellent looking IPA. Smell: Grass and peaches are the two things that I get most. There is also a slight citrus note in there as well. Really does smell nice. Taste: Quite a lot like the aroma, really. Kind of tastes like a ripe peach at first, and the medium feel of Sculpin gives that impression even more. There’s then a bitterness on the middle of the tongue, with a sticky, dry, piney and bitter finish. The aftertaste is just lingering pine and peach bitterness that I love. Sculpin’s an excellent name for this IPA, especially as it warms up. After being out for about ten minutes, the bitterness intensifies, and the alcohol becomes traceable. Canned and put onto my tastebuds here in Michigan just 12 days later. A six-pack ran me $14 or $15, which is definitely kind of steep (considering I can get a sixer of Two Hearted for $10), but this has an excellent bitter pine and peach flavor that I thoroughly enjoy. If this were available in Michigan, I’d definitely pick it up from time-to-time... even with the slightly higher price point.
