COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

I've had this before and didn't much care for it. This batch (6-pack that just arrived at the store) was fantastic. It pours a beautiful orange and smells like fresh sticky hops. Fruity hops, like citrusy orange, mango & grapefruit. It tastes much the same, juicy! Bitter on the finish but not overly, all in all it's delicious, balanced and in my opinion, what a great IPA should taste like. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

On tap at Money Plays. Pours a clear amber with thick frothy white head sticky lacing. The aroma is floral hops and pine. Medium mouthfeel with a strong hop bite and bitter finish. Easy to drink, really enjoyed this one. An impressive IPA from Ballast Point.

This should be the reference for an IPA. Tastes amazing! I wish it had better availability here in Maryland. Really nice hop balanced with the malt backbone. A joy to drink.

Rich aroma of orange peel, malt, bread, a little pine or rosemary. Appearance is a clear, burnt orange, minimal head that laces on the glass. Somewhat viscous body that slides over the tongue, leaving itís rich taste behind to linger in a long finish. Lively but soft carbonation. A nice balance of rich body, slight sweet notes of currant, with an exploding carbonated dry bitterness A long, dry finish turns from slightly sweet to strong, dry bitter, leaving a clean lingering taste that lasts.

Pours a burnt orange with gold highlights and a good sized white head, plenty of lacing on the glass. Aroma is definitely on the fruity side of hoppy with mango, orange, lemon, and a subtle pine but not much. Definitely fresh and inviting. The flavor shows a bit of malt as well with some biscuit, breadcrust and caramel, but itís the citrusy hops that dominate. Finishes very flavorful with a well managed bitterness and flavors of toast, grapefruit, orange, and nuts? I dunno. Mouthfeel is easy going and unassuming yet gets good points for that. Great beer that maybe didnít wow me, but I can recognize excellence when I drink it.

Pours a rusty amber orange with a nice head. Nose is citrus, tropical fruits and pine. Taste is full of flavor, not terribly bitter and finishes smoothly on a sweet note. Alcohol well masked, drinks as a lighter IPA with a lower ABV. Quite nice from a great microbrewer. Quaff Score 9 / 10
