San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Dark yellow-orange pour with thin white head. Aroma is strong hops and citrus. Flavor is extreme hops, heavy citrus, light malt. Finish is dry & hoppy, fairly soft mouthfeel. Not as big of a fan of this IPA as others, mostly due to the dry-hop feel to it.

UPDATED: OCT 16, 2013 Bottle 650 ml. Hazy amber/orange colour with an off-white head. Hoppy, tropical, citrusy, piney. Lightly malty with just a bit of toasted & caramel notes. Bitter and dry finish of¨course, but still balanced and dangerously easy to finish. Not a super fresh bottle, but still very good.

This is (in my opinion) the best IPA in the world. From the first taste, I have been hooked. Amazing citrus hop aroma and flavor.

The beer pours a dark golden copper color with tinges of orange. It produces a nice three finger off white head that dissipates rather quickly into a nice layer covering the beer and running around the edge of the glass. Big aroma on this. An immediate dankness rose up from the glass. I got hints of pine, with citrus, mild grapefruit with a hint of lemon. I also got big tropical fruits, definitely some mango. Maybe a hint of peach and a dash of apricot. There is also some nice malty sweetness coming through that masks the alcohol nicely. Starts off very soft on the palate. Not a ton of carbonation to speak of. A lot more lemon on the taste. Picking up a bit more peach and apricot on the palate as well. Middle of the mouth the bitterness comes back into play, some of that piney grapefruit. Slightly sweet towards the back and it finishes very clean. Not really any trace of the alcohol. The body on this is medium light to medium. It’s a rather crisp beer. Some lacing left on the glass. A nice west coast IPA.
