San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Ar: Bright grapefruit, orange, and pine. Ap: Orange, clear - medium off-white head with good retention, and leaves a ring of creamy foam. T: Sweet, bread malt, with some biscuit flavor - lots of grapefruit and pine, some lemon notes, too - high, clean bitterness - finish is orange, bitterness, and toasted malt. P: Medium body with high carbonation - finish is dry. O: Excellent American IPA - big and bright hop flavor with a clean and supportive malt backbone.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2013 Orange pour into snifter. Piney and orange citrus on the nose then tongue. Dry. Missing the body of an East Coast IPA, but thatís the point, right? Lovely.

12 bottle supplied by SHERM1016....thanks! Pours a rich dark yellow; moderate head. No lacing. Who cares....this is one very great beer. Bitter / hoppy (juniper / pine) nose and dry / hoppy initial taste. Bitter taste lingers....but what an excellent bitter it is! Very tasty!!

12 ounce bottle divided into tulip glasses. Iím glad to see this distributed in the Chicago market in the past few weeks. Itís the gold standard, in my mind, for the single ipa style. Iíve benefitted from a fresh bottle, less than a month old, so the hops were at their juicy finest. Slightly herbaceous and veggie in character, and those hops pair up deliciously in a non-citrus sort of way. Medium bodied, ruby red, good amount of bubble and foam presence. At 7% abv, theyíve crafted a finely balanced ipa that you can drink without knocking out your senses nor your tastebuds. If you havenít tried this one, itís worth hunting down.

Pours orange-amber with a white head. Aromas of orange, peach, grass, green tea, slightly floral. Taste is grapefruit, orange, apricot, grass, and resin. This is mostly hops all around, but there is a backing of delicate malt sweetness. Finish is resinous, bitter, and mostly dry. Citrus, tropical, green and juicy with great balance. Excellent IPA.

Bottle. Pours clear golden with a large, creamy, white head. Aroma has lovely hops, peach, grapefruit, resin, citrus. Medium carbonation, fine dry and quite creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is mild at first, bringing out sweetish doughy malts, then turns more fruity, peach, grapefruit and citrus with a piney punch. Lingering heavy bitterness.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2014 This coulda been a contender, if not for the onions. Awfully nice citrus and perfume on the nose, and then onion. No one else will really notice, but itís there. Otherwise, excellent. Re-rate: The onions are milder this time. But I still donít understand the hype. I like their Big Eye better.

Canned Sculpin, unbelievable this is available in a can. Holds true to the aroma and taste of a draft serving. Great beer.
