San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JAN 29, 2014 Pours clear amber with moderate head. Nose is pine, mango, tropical fruit, hops. Taste is pine and peppery spicy hops on the front, on the back end it smooths out a lot with mango and tropical fruit notes. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel for an ipa. For my money the best IPA out there. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Relatively fresh bottle with new label design, just a few weeks old. Bright gold color with very small white head and no lacing. Aroma is very citrusy and piney. Flavor is mostly citrus, with a clean bitter finish. This is so smooth and very crisp, and tastes good but its kind of boring. Price on the 6-packs are a bit high.

From tap at Mikkeller bar SF. Hazy orange with creamy head. Aroma of pine, mango and peach. Dry pine and mango taste.

Bottle from Fairport Brew review. I believe Mark said this is now available in the area, hallelujah. Light orange, mostly clear, caramel, citrus, dry palate. Decent. Some pine in the palate. I guess that’s what I usually mean by a dry IPA.

Pours hazy apricot, nice head and lasting lace, citrusy, apricot biscuits aroma, beautifully balanced sweet apricot fruit leather and hoppy middle palate, finishing full-bodied and crisp. No sign of the 7% ABV on the palate, a benchmark IPA!

22Oz Bottle Clear light orange, bright white head. Sharp papery hop aroma. Big bitter piney flavor. Still, a little sweet and smooth. Some caramel sweetness. Very nice

Deep golden color with frothy white head...thick lacing. Fragrant floral, citrus hop aroma. Taste...Wow, fantastic taste. Rich. Malty. Hoppy. It's sweet, floral, piney, fruity. Notes of grapefruit. Two Hearted is my favorite IPA. This is incredibly similar and just as good. Top Shelf! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a dark golden color with a white head that does not go away at all and leaves large amounts of lazing. Smells very fruity and a bit sweet maybe caramel on the head, yet the hops are there. This beer starts off with a bit og malty sweetness and fruityness at the the start and then goes into a hop parade and leaves a not so bitter finish. Great beer, wish I had more than one

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2013 Very nice aroma. Fruity hops. Some grapefruit and even a mango or nectarine aroma. Prob my favorite aroma of an ipa yet. Wish there was a bit more of the aroma in the taste. It is there but not as strong as the aroma. Malt level is well balanced. Slight bitter finish. Overall a great ipa. Like some things better than Heady Topper and some in heady topper more. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: Clear amber with finger thick off white head. Aroma: Mango, apricot, peach, grapefruit, biscuit, a hint of floral aromas and gentle pine hints. Taste: Low sweetness, medium bitterness and medium sourness. Palate: Smooth thin texture, light body and mouthfeel, average carbonation and slightly astringent. The finish is lingering with an initial fruit burst with apricot tartness that develops into a balanced bitterness. Comments: Delicious and left a glass lace.
