San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Pours golden yellow with white head that dissipates. Piney hop aroma. Nice hop flavor that isn't too overwhelming or boozy. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Light brown/golden pour with half inch of white head. Aroma of bright lemon and orange citrus hops and zest, mellow yeast and some powdery floral hops too. Higher than average carbonation, slightly numbing, oily but thin mouthfeel. Sour on finish. Taste is robust and well blended between malt and hops but a bit on the bitter side. Serious carmel taste from malt and floral and pine hops. The blend causes a complex melon and/or apricot complexity. Good IPA but a bit overpriced to me, not exactly sure what the fuss is about.

Very hoppy but yet perfectly balanced. Fresh hoppy citrus aroma and taste without becoming too dry.

12 oz bottle pours a hazy orange with small off-white head and some lacing. Aroma made me say WOW: lots of apricot, pine, citrus and floral hops. Taste is bitter with some roasted malts coming out near the end, but with a bitter finish. Body is medium with a crisp mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. This is the most memorable IPA I’ve tried in many months. Looking forward to the next one.

12 oz bottle poured into short wine glass. Light orange color with a small head that dissipates quickly. Enticing aroma of citrus apricots and zest with a hint of pine. Tastes great- orange, and hoppy citrus burst out of this one. Yum An IPA that deserves its high rating ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught. Light hazy amber, off-white head, thick lacing. Fruity, tropical with peach, toffee, caramel, citrus, very drinkable. Medium bodied. Very nice stuff, but can’t help but think about how this would be fresh on tap.

Bottle to glass. Pours a lovely light amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma is full of hops in all of their glory, citrusy, floral, all mixed together with a light caramel malty sweetness. Flavor is a pungent hoppy bitterness with a light caramel malt sweetness. Light to medium in body with a lingering citrusy hop bitterness in the finish. Always been one of my favorites.

Bomber. Appearance is a light golden bronze color with a cap of off-white foam and bubbles. Lots of pine resin, tropical fruit, grapefruit and lemon in the aroma. The taste starts with a potent dose of tangerine, pineapple and grapefruit rind along with some pine, hops resin and toasted malt toward the end. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a clean, bitter citrus finish. Overall, a fantastic West Coast style IPA with just enough balance and complexity.

Apricot and citurs aroma; golden, caramel appearance; light, crisp hpppy taste with a hint of sweetness; lively on the palate with a bitter finish; overall a very good beer with the charcteristically hoppy flavor of an IPA, but light enough that you could find yourself through three before you knew it.
