San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

12oz bottle from Shane. Thanks! Drunk on 10-12-12, reviewed from notes A: Golden-copper yellow. Great white head lasts for the duration of the beer. N: Oh Lord in Heaven. Pineapple, mango, citrus, mandarin orange. This is like walking around a fruit stand. Some pine. This nose goes on forever. T: As fruity as the nose is, the body is equally piney and earthy. Very, very bitter and dry. A little pineapple, but this is an overwhelming spruce bomb. Some bready/biscuity notes and malt. Quite the dichotomy. M: Palate is dry to the point where it’s like a hop covered with spikes and razors. Fair amount of alcohol. O: The epitome of the West Coast IPA. Dry, scraping, and lacking in most of the malt needed to balance out the hops. If only the dry hopping lasted throughout the body, this might be my first perfect 5.

Draft at Hopping Pig, San Diego. Food pairing with braised bratwurst. Piney hoppy aroma, pleasantly bitter but not overwhelming. Good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a hazy orange with a thin sticky foam. Smells like apricot, hay, and pine. Nice spicy hop flavor with some malt and light fruit. Finish is dry and refreshing. One of the best IPA’s.

Pours a hazy golden orange with good off-white head and moderate lacing. Aromas of citrus and piney hops, sweet maltiness, and slight lemongrass qualities. Taste is piney resins, citrus hops, bittersweet finish. Great IPA, hopefully I can find it again.

Fantastic beer. Just the right amount of hops that lingers in your mouth ninutes after taking a sip. Very easy drinkability, light yet hoppy, not filling and with notes of orange and grapefruit. Even a non-IPA lover would love this beer.

Had at Brewzilla during Cleveland Beer Week. Floral and citrus notes, just the right amount of bitterness. Finished nicely, very solid IPA.

A very nice IPA. THis bottle was enjoy by 10/24/12 so not sure how old the bottle is? Still an awesome IPA and I bet that it is even more awesome fresher! Cheers!
