San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 The citrusy aroma is really great. The taste is very, very good - first citrusy/fruity hops and then a decent bit of pine resin on the finish with almost no malt present. Itís medium bodied - not quite light, but definitely not heavy. If you like IPAs, this one is a must try if you see it.

Bomber. Pours a slightly hazy orangey color, thin white head, so-so retention and lacing. Nose is citrus and hint dank, with some malts. Mouth is medium bodied, peaches, grapefruit, some mango, medium bitter but downplayed compared to similar IPAs. Clean finish, particularly considering the body not much of an aftertaste. Solid.

Color and smell were amazing. Liked the body and head remained constant. Clearly deserves rank amongst the best. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours golden with a small white head. Smells of hops and peaches. Tastes of hops, fruit, peaches, and slight bitter. Very refreshing and delicious. Simple but complex.

Aromatics are lovely and very "light" in hops lots of citrus and bright fruits. Just a lovely smelling beer. Those aromatics are replicated in a super balanced taste lots of grapefruit and mild bitterness.

Nice fresh citrus/fruity aroma. Apricot, grapefruit flavors dominate, but all in all a extremely well balanced IPA. Very drinkable, but with plenty of character.

Hmm, I;m not quite getting the hype for this one. It has a near perfect rustic orange pour with a big white head that fades into good lacing. The aroma is a very generous amount of hops. The taste is just a little too bitter for me. It just doesnít follow through in complexity. I can see how the bitter hop heads love this but I donít think itís worthy of being 100, sorry - however, still a fine, fine beer.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2013 Pours hazy deep orange gold with a fluffy, golden-tinged head that settles to a finger and fades gradual-like. Wafts a wonderful sweet aroma that carries over into the front end of a sip. Floral hop notes and vanilla, caramel, orange and peach. Taste has powerful and complex citrus from sweet orange and lemon to bitter grapefruit. Incredible balance - this beer dances along your tongue. Pine hops and caramel malt in there too. Creamy mouthfeel. Bitterness is enhanced with warming. Outstanding depth of flavor and truly amazing balance between sweet and bitter. A world-class IPA.

Crisp citrus and pine hops balanced perfectly with not overly sweet malt. Possibly my new favorite IPA. Damn fine beer.

Pours orangish amber with white head. Strong citrus and pine hops. Taste is hoppy with caramel and tofee notes. Excellent malt presense that is not to overwhelming.
