COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle from the beer store. Pours golden with minimal head. Aroma of grapefruit/hops, and taste of citrus/hops. A nice IPA that has some good depth.

Poured from a draft into a plastic up at Gaglione Brothers in San Diego, Calif. Color was golden orange. Minimal head when I got it, maybe ½ inches. Decent amount of lacing on the top. Healthy amount of film on the sides. Smelled of citrus hops, mainly lemon zest and grapefruit. Some pine in there, too. First tasted was a bitter, strong alcohol bite. Grapefruit dominated the taste after. Still very bitter on the finish. Medium body. Lively (moderate) carbonation, maybe even a bit higher. Bitter finish. Not a bad beer, but nothing really “wowed” me. I had to give it a try considering how rare it is to fine.

22oz bottle courtesy of wavers1. Pours hazy orange with a thin white head that sticks around leaving thick lacing. Aroma is juicy, citrusy hops. A little breadiness in the background. Body is full, but crisp. Flavor is not very bitter, but very hoppy. Again, citrusy, juicy hops without being resiny. A little crisp maltiness in the finish. Incredible IPA!

Great beer. Aroma is strong in hops, fruit, and sweetness. The appearance is a clear light orange. Taste is complex with hops, fruit, bitter, then a bit of a sweet finish.

On tap at Capones during their Black Friday event. Light amber with a white head. Grapefruit, some pine resin, mango, lemon zest, light malt. Light on the palate yet medium bodied, soapy and sweet with a bitterness that grows.

How can anyone not love Sculpin. It is the quintessential California IPA. At 7% it presents everything you want in an IPA, hop driven throughout, enough maltiness to supports the piney and citrussy nose and palate. Beautiful

Mostly grapefruit/citrus comes through in the aroma. I also smell light pine and floral hops. Appearance is a light gold/amber with a medium foam head. The taste is dominated by grapefruit and nice hops. Very large grapefruit on the finish with a nice bitterness and spice. Texture is smooth with a somewhat light body. Overall, this recipe caught me a little offgaurd, it was much more focused on grapefruit and citrus, which dominated the flavor. I definitely enjoyed this brew, there was a nice combination of citrus/fruit flavor along with nicely balanced malts and hops. I’d give this an A- rating.

A bright, fruity, florally beer with a great light hop flavor. Not too heavy or overpowering flavor. Easy drinking beer. Great for summer.

(bottle) pours a clear deep golden colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of honey, passion fruit and cherries, deeply resinous. flavour is the same, the resin being quite dominant again, with a medium tropical fruitiness and a nicely integrated medum-bitter finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

Sampled at SBWF. Stockholm, September 29th, 2011.
Dry and pleasantly hoppy and fresh aroma. Grass, grapefruit and some pine needles. The taste is also quite and and very low on the sweet side - something that I really enjoy. Big hoppy punch with a nice bitter finish. Great IPA!
