COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle (bomber) from the Cracked Kettle. Hazy amber, medium off-white head. Hoppy aroma with apricots and other tropical fruits, pine needles, and some citric and perfumy notes. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Dry with long bitterness. A very well done IPA.

Pours slightly darker than straw-colored with a large white head. There’s definitely orange and cat piss in the nose. I swear I smell marijuana, too. Bizarre. This would be a great summertime IPA because it is so refreshing. Lots of citrus on the palate, with flavors of orange and grapefruit. It’s not particularly dry and there’s just a small bit of sweetness on the tale end. Really great beer, but the hype seems a bit over the top.

Bottle pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma shows notes of caramel, mango, orange, and pine. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of peach, tangerine, and apricot. Overall body is moderate, and exceptionally fruity with well balanced bitterness.

Sampled at an ESBLS tasting at Bigelo’s. A hazy dingy gold beer with a big soapy white head. Nice lacing. Very nicely done! Soft citrus flavors with peppery spice, bread, some bitterness. This one has a cool personality. Pretty much what one wants in an IPA.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2011 Man, what a great IPA. Smells like mango, tastes like grapefruit, all wrapped in a bitter hoppy shell. The malts give Sculpin the tiniest bit of sweetness on the front, but the beer truly is a showcase of hops, bitter and citric and dry as the finish turns piney and resinous. Not an IPA for the timid, this bottle does stretch the limits of the amounts of hops that can be pounded into a single India Pale Ale. But, hey, fuck the timid. Life’s too short to drink underhopped IPAs. So drink Sculpin. It’s delicious.

Sampled at Brewvival 2011. On cask, it was a little flat. My palate could have been blown out by the time i got to this one, but I didn’t really think that highly of this. Faded mellow "c" hops. With as much as this beer is hyped up, I can’t wait to actually try a fresh batch sometime.

From the tap poured an amber color with a good amount of head. Hoppy flavor with a lasting finish.

At a tasting, thanks DSG, bottle, pours cloudy yellow, tropical fruits aroma, lychee and pineapple taste, excellent bitter aftertaste, and overall an astounding beer.
