San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours gold with a white head. Piney hop aroma with some malt. Taste is bitter piney hops, a touch of citrus, and a decent malt back bone.

On tap at Capone's in Norristown, PA. Actually tried this a few months after first trying the Habanero Sculpin, which was a beer I loved. It was nice to try this without the spice. Definitely a top tier IPA.

Strong citrus IPA smell. Pours clear orange with a white head. Flavor is all grapefruit and bitter. Light beer with average carbonation, very good!

Bomber poured into pint glasses. Pours a clear amber color with a nice white head and solid lacing through the glass. Smell is resin, pine, a bit of grapefruit, and slight alcohol. Taste is again with the resin, juicy grapefruit, and again with the alcohol. Slightly oily finish, but still enjoyable. Note: there were 2 enjoy by dates on the bottle, so this quite possibly could be older. EDIT: had a second bottle with and enjoy by date of 07/11/13 and was much better.

Light amber head that lingers. Crisp hop aroma with light cereal notes. Wonderful grapefruit citrus explosion that gives way to malt well balanced and delicious. Crisp on the tongue and although relatively strong, it feels light.

Crisp IPA. Dark yellow pour with hoppy aromas. Lighter IPA in flavor. Very nice grapefruit notes, with a pretty balanced bitterness. Interestingly, what lingers for me is malt flavor, which isn't pronounced at the front end. ABV of 7% is quite cloy, particularly since the beer has a light mouthfeel. When I think La Jolla, this beer comes to mind. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2013 On tap in a goblet. Aroma is very citrusy and hoppy. Pours a golden color with a thin white head. Taste hoppy up front with a lingering bite. Average carbonation with a sharp mouthfeel.

Bottle at a.Kitchen in Philly. POurs orange gold with fluffy white head. Huge, huge nose of grapefruit, tropical fruits and pine. Great aroma. Taste is all citrus fruits, pine resin and woodiness. The finish is slightly biteer and lingers. If the finish was smoother this would be out of the park.

Gets a 10 for the aroma, with perfect, full nose of Niagara Peninsula ice wine extract, peach and grapefruits and some evergreen resin. Dark, tranlucent gold, not copperish enough, with a respectable head. Flavours of tangerine, grapes, very hoppy - with a STING! - and a malty sweetness hidden behind the fruity/floral backbone, as a thin spinal chord, better noticeable at the finish. Nice resinous palate, medium bodied, ultra professionally brewed and very clever choice of name. This would be my choice to go with a bouillabaisse!

Good IPA that I have wanted to try for a while. Date says drink by August 2013. Aroma is of grapfruit, pine, grass, alcohol burn, and slight malt. Taste is somewhat transparent to the aroma, although toned down a little bit. Not bad, but for the price here in Ohio, I can find better, fresher IPA’s.
