COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2012 the aroma right off the bat was the citrus of the hops and as it warmed some i picked up the apricot and peach...what a wonderful scent to have in this beer...medium bodied and smooooooth...hops do no over power this beer at all..the citrus flavor and the apricot are forefront on this one and the smoothness as it goes down. on the back end you do get a bit of the lemon blended with the bitterness of the hops and it works...very very good beer.

Decent beer. Iím not fond of the amount of apricot however and the beer literally feels like itís evaporating off your tongue at the end. I want the middle to linger. Meh.

22 oz bottle poured into a tumbler pint glass. Best by date is 09/07/12, so this should be nice and (relatively) fresh... A: Pours a lightly cloudy golden amber color with light carbonation. The head is a nicely frothy two finger offwhite head with excellent retention and texture. Leaves a nice ring of lacing, and is a generally beautiful beer. S: Nicely tropical, with notes of mango, apricot, and passion fruit. A little bit of the malt backbone pops up here, too. Nice smelling, but not quite as boldly aromatic as I was expecting. T: Much like the nose, strong tropical fruits (mango, grapefruit rind, and apricot) open things up, and stay there throughout the flavor progression. Aside from the citric notes, this is also very piny (and almost peppery) in its hop composition, especially on the finish. The malt backbone is just there - all it does is provide a neutral canvas while giving a nice balance. I like the complexity of the hop character, but this isnít the end all be all I was expecting it to be. Itís still a good IPA, though. M: Very dry and very oily. Itís a rather coarse and prickly beer in general; a little more smoothness would be incredibly welcome. While the coarse, well carbonated character gives it nice drinkability, it means itís a little harsh going down. O: Itís a good IPA. Itís a very good IPA. But itís NOT the masterpiece I hoped it would be. I feel like itís too resinous and dry to truly belong in the elite tier. And given its price here on the East coast, I doubt Iíll revisit this again (except on tap).

Citrus, balanced hops, nice finish. Beautiful beer. If you like Ballast Point check out Mother Earth Brewery just north of them, small brewery about to take off. One of the few legit breweries in their area.

The citrus and tropical aromas immediately seduce you into the secluded part of the world where tourists disappear and legendary tales begin. Are you ready for adventure? Sculpin lets you know sheís not your everyday IPA as soon as you wash up on the shore. She flashes her delicate pineapples and you finally wrap your tongue around her sweet mangoes for the first time. You see little difference between the celestial bodies as both the sun and her white gold complexion refresh your soul and tingle your libido. Her hops playfully nibble and bite, but never lose sight of why you came. She wants to satisfy but she doesnít want you to leave. Each sip is a tease that both surprisingly exceeds legend and leaves you yearning for more. You want her again and again. Her siren song calls you and you only. This is why youíre lost, sailor. Itís because you want to be.

Good ipa with malt and hops abundant. Missing something, some watery-ness but very very slight. Lemon zest with minor vegitation from hops.

From a Liquor store on Lake Mead Blvd in Vegas. Hazy yellow with great retention. Smell juicy peaches, malt, tropical fruit. Taste is like peaches and cream. No alcohol, hoppy and bitter, earthy and a bit of tea. Awesome ipa.
