COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Tasting at the 18th Mondial de la bière, June 8, 2011. Honey blond, little head. Hop aroma with citrus and peach powerful and floral. Taste a little similar to the aroma, but less strong, good bitterness. Enjoyable, nothing more!

Sample at Mondial de la Bière (Montréal). Golden body with low carbonation and a thick white foamy head. Sharp hoppy taste with strong melon/grapefruit hints. Its hoppy taste hides the alcohol pretty well and ends with a decent bittersweet finish. Very good example of IPA.

Pailhead (4622) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - JUN 8, 2011
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate orange, peach, mango, and grapefruit. It pours a mostly transparent amber with lots of sediment and a two finger off-white head. The flavor starts with moderate orange with a touch of peach and mango. The finish has moderate grapefruit with a touch of pine. Medium bodied with mild carbonation and a soft mouthfeel.

Nice, bright hoppy nose with assertive citrus and resin notes. Bitterness on the palate is sharp and is backed by a decent malt presence. Really nice IPA.

On Nitro tap at brewery. Beautiful golden pour with thick, puffy, white head that only nitro can do. Nose is citrus, pine, and some tropical fruits. Taste follows the nose but the hops are dialed down a little compared to other IPAs. Mouthfeel is crazy good and creamy.

beerbastard (673) - Mesa, Arizona, USA - JUN 7, 2011
Lots of lemony grapefruit and pine in the nose. Looking for a little more malt to balance all those hop flavors. Some honey up front in the taste. however the bitterness does not over power the taste. Clean and very dry finish. Very good. There could be a couple of IPAs I like better, but this is up there.

Bright gold pour with a thin white head that left a few spots of lacing. Bready aroma with a lot of pine and citrus hops, which lean more towards lemon and grapefruit. Flavor is very lemony, somewhat doughy, with a sharp pine bite. Light and crisp, pretty refreshing. Well carbonated. Lingering bitter finish that seems slightly abrasive. A good beer, no doubt, but I’m having trouble trying to figure out why this is highly rated. For the trouble you have to go through to get it, I’d rather have Pliny, or even Blind Pig.

Aroma is citrusy hops, tangerine and lemon. Nothing but sweet goodness. The appearance is banana yellow, tiny bubbles of carbonation. Fluffy head; decent spotty lace. Very "pale." The flavor is citrus: tangerine, orange, lemon, hint of apple skins. Very sweet with just a hint of pale malts. Meshes beautifully. A touch of dry yeast at the finish. The palate is slightly fizzy and juicy. Very hefty finish. A little dry. (It reminds me of Rogue Yellow Snow, So. Tier Krampus.) This is a sweet, summery IPA and a damn good one.

22oz - Phenomenal representation of the style. Frothy head, orange liquid, bright hoppy flavors, bitterness balanced by malt.
