San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

If you haven’t had this west coast style ipa, you are missing out. This is one of my favorite ipa’s out there. Easy to drink, get balance, and big hop bite and aroma. A must have in the fridge at all times.

Happy to find this after seeing it on the Zymurgy list. Aroma was pleasant hop mixture tending towards the pine/dank side. Taste was appropriately bitter and well balanced; I found the mouthfeel somewhat towards heavy/mildly syrupy. I may have had unfair expectations.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2015 19.06.2013, cask @ The Ginger Man NY:
No head. Aroma is slightly dry fruity, light malts, dried fruits, tropical fruits, hops, pine needles, leafs, newly cut lawn, caramel. Taste is slightly concentrated dry grassy, light malts, lots of hops, pine needles, wet leafs, newly cut lawn, tropical fruits, hay, caramel. Longlasting bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Nice one, even though it’s a bit too dry and concentrated.

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2013 Finally had this for the first time. Gold with slight hint of amber. White head that fades. Aroma is a grass field after a quick spring shower and sweet grain. Medium-light body. Flavor is on the resinous/sap side but hugely balanced towards bitterness. Light malt sweetness as well. I don’t see what all the fuss us. Had it next to Breakside India Golden Ale and thought that was several notches better. I must have a very different palate than many of the beer enthusiasts here.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2013 Re-rate, December 2013. Clear golden body, medium white head. Nose is red berries and red fruit, grass, peaches, hints of garden herbs. Taste is resinous herbs, citric peel, kiwi and hints of spruce and pine. Light to medium carbonation. Considerably nicer than last time. Bottle, shared with BBGTC @ "Best Before Last Summer Tasting 2013". Pours a clear golden body with a medium white head. Nose is strong herbal-spicy peppery pine tones, red fruits, cardamum, hints of caramel and berries. Taste is tight resinous bitter hop tones, dry grass, pine, red fruits and hints of melon. Medium body, soft carbonation. Pretty ok for its age, probably way better when fresh.

Pours a very bright, lighter amber with a medium to full, slightly off white head. The aroma is powerful. It consists of grapefruit, peach, pineapple, mango, apricot, with some mild pine notes. All impressions are balanced very well. The taste contains much more citrus fruits than your typical IPA. Many of the initial impressions remain, especially grapefruit, peach, and apricot. The pine still balances things out and is noticed more at the end. There is a very good, bitter hoppy kick that this one delivers. Strong and lingering aftertaste is mostly pine with some more mild citrus. The body is medium to full, sticky in texture, with lots of good carbonation contained within. Although it is more of a bigger beer, it is refreshing, simply for the fact that Its delicious. This is an amazing offering, and is probably one of the best IPAs I’ve ever had. This one cannot be passed up. Get it if you see it.
