COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

pour almost tan yellow in colour and good lace. Can say that i dislike the aroma on this brew as it is very hoppy, pine cones and very west coast goodness.more of the same on the palate, very good length. Very full bodied, very nice, Iíd almost be tempted to call it a double.. Amazing.

650ml bottle in a tasting glass. Light, hazy copper pour with a slightly off-white head. Spruce and grapefruit hops on the nose with a real lemon zesty vibe. Fairly light on the palate with the fresh citrusy hops really shining through, balanced nicely against subtle hops. Finishes with a smooth lingering bitterness.

Seemed pretty intense at the first sip then the palate adjusted and it went down a treat, golden straw body with lasting head, big hoppy nose with plenty of bitterness in the taste. Good beer!!

A really fantastic full flavored IPA. This is so balanced. The aroma is super herbal and hoppy. Tons of citrus. Same with the taste...with a really nice and sweet malt backbone. Palate is perfect and this finished dry and balanced. BALANCED! Its alittle pale yellowish with haze....I love those IPA that are bright orange and clear. A wonderful brew.

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2011 This one was kind of hard to find, kind of. Poured from a bottle, instantly the nice big bubbly head settled to little or no lacing. Scent was very dry, with ginger and light spice, citrus even. The taste was impressive, almost too dry for me at first, but then settled to a nice spicy sweetness with notes of grapefruit and light caramel. Very light on the palate, a rather filling and flavorful beer.

Bottle. Light amber, hazy, average and fully diminishing head. Moderate, malty and lightly sweetish aroma, grapefruit and piney hoppyness, some fruitiness faint caramel. Body is medium, malty and dryish flavor, citrus and piney hoppyness, faint. Finish is average, malty and dry, citrus and piney hoppyness. Dryish IPA, really nice hoppyness - not too malty. Ace.

This starts with a great hoppy aroma, with pine, citrus, and tropical fruit notes. This pours a clear light amber, with a huge amount of visible carbonation, and just a thin white head. Thereís a nice blast of chewy hops, with a touch of tropic fruits in the finish. The beer leaves thick lacing on the glass. This is a great example of a West coast IPA.

Cask at Get Real NY. Dry hopped with Fuggles. Very nice fruity aroma, lots of citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit. Taste is hoppy, pine and fruit, but very smooth. Light bitterness on the finish. Very fruity, flavorful, smooth, complex, amazing IPA. Need to try this again, and soon. One of the few beers at Get Real that really stood out.

They must add a half ton of hops to this after the boil. The hop flavor is just ridiculous. The amount of hops that San Diego goes though is staggering. Anywho, malt is well in the back, bitterness is understated, and hop flavor with all sticky grassy citrus-y goodness. No taste of alcohol at all. A fine IPA. Might be the hoppy-ist single IPA I have had. If you really pay attention the malt under all the good hops isnít that great, but it is buried so deep I donít care.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2011 On tap at The Monk. Pours an opaque yellow golden with a small white head leaving some nice lacing. Aromas of mango, apricot and lemon. Great nose. Smells like a tropical punchbowl. Taste brings out some more lemon with zesty citrus flavours combined with a finishing bitterness and mango. Best ipa at The Monk so far. Very pleased with this one
