San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Cloudy gold pour with a two finger head. Nice lace. Aroma is full of grass. A little citrus. Taste is very grassy. Mouth drying effect in this one. Medium body.

Draft at Proof. Deep gold pour with a bubbly white head and laces all the way down the glass. Big mango, peach, pineapple and tangerine hops on the nose with a light sweetness. All the aroma flavor stuck around the flavor with a great balance and lingering bitterness. Great fucking beer.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2014 Off the tap into a tulip glass. One finger of head on a deep golden colored body. The aroma is pineapple, mango, lemon and grapefruit. Nice. The taste is biting bitterness with a bit of honey at the end. A crisp texture and a bit smooth with moderate carbonation and medium body. It’s a great IPA.

Sweet citrus hop in the aroma. Pours a cloudy light Orange with yellow tints in the light. Good hop in the front with a more constant bitterness throughout.. not really complex in the flavor stages.

UPDATED: JAN 21, 2013 Probably as fresh a bottle as you can get in the midwest (over 3 months before the enjoy by date). S: Great aroma, but subtle - sweet grapefruit, pineapple, grass, citrus zest, some breadiness, and decently resinous and astringent. A: Pours a pretty hazy gold with a nice white head that sticks clings to the glass T: Not over-the-top bitterness by any means - pretty dry. The layers of flavor are muddled and not easily perceived, but still very tasty. Lemon zest, grapefruit, solid malt backbone P: Feels like an IPA, does not linger very long O: A good IPA out of the bottle, but I image it’s an entirely different beast when it’s in its infancy on tap. Looking forward to trying it that way one day, but over priced for being bottled.

From a 22 ounce bottle into a frosted pint glass. Harsh hoppy bitterness follows this from aroma to first sip to aftertaste. Excellent. I get pine and citrus (grapefruit) together. I find it easy to drink.

On tap at Cole’s in Buffalo. Pours light and clear with almost no head at all. Aroma is strong and delicious with citrus and very hoppy. Taste has a very mild bitter to it with the big citrus notes coming through.

Very nice. Aroma mellow citrus fruits, well balanced but not screaming pine like some good IPAs. Slight passion fruit. No head retention, not that pretty. Light amber. Very well balanced with sharp but quickly fading citrus fruit. Beautiful bitterness it finish with a sharp tang at the end. Great mouth feel. Coats your mouth like acrylic paint (that’s a good thing) Overall very nice, not the best IPA in the world. Probably.

On tap @ Public House in Vegas. Bright clear orange gold. Incredibly vibrant hoppy nose, enormously fragrant tropical fruit, citrus and pine. Oily hoppy body possessing the flavours of all the fresh aromatics found on the nose, with an added vegetal depth and a long piney bitter finish. Truly outstanding!

Bottle. Pours a warm, lambent orange-red with a low, fine-grained head. The nose is amazing -- peach, sage, sweet flowers, rosemary -- blows me away. Snaps like a dry twig on the palate with a burst of hops followed perfectly by stone fruit and caramel. Finish is tingly and dry with a trace of long-lived bitterness. Amazing.
