COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JUL 7, 2012 Bottle, at le mondiale 2011. Typical orange pour, with a big frothy sticky head. Huge amounts of lacing. A huge hop, grapefruit punch to my senses. Piney resins, just a hop assault. Im glad i had this last before i left the mondiale for teh day, cause this destroyed my palate. Bit bitter hoppy finish, a hop heads wet dream.

Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus and grape. Taste is light to medium sweet and medium bitter with a long fruity kind of dry finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle. Pours a fairly clear golden-yellow with a thick white head. Considerable hop and citrus aromas. Citrus, spice, and floral hop tastes make way for a very long, bitter finish, although the flavors continue to resonate long after the beer has passed down the gullet. Very delicious, although I prefer the balance of their Big Eye. Not sure it lives all the way up to the "100/100" label, but easily one of the better IPAs I have tried.

(bottle - 22 oz) Slightly hazy orange pour with a very thin white head and mild carbonation. Very sweet and fruity hop aroma. Lots of citrus notes. Flavor is mild, a lot milder than I thought it’d be, with a sweet and slightly grapefruity flavor. Finishes with a very light bitter peppery note with a lingering bitter aftertaste.

Thanks to Chipalsa for the bottle share! Magnificent aromas of grassy/herbal notes and solid grapefruit/pine hoppiness. Pour was hazy and had quickly dissipating head and thin lacing. Flavors were well balanced leaving a hoppy citrus and pine flavor on the tongue with caramel malts settling in as well. Great stuff.

Crushed at GABF ’10. Was so excited to sample this beer. It did not disappoint. An almost perfect example of an IPA. Packed with flavor. Citrus and grapefruit abound. One hell of a beer.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2013 Draft. Poured a slightly hazy golden color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was citrus, lemon notes. Aroma was less like an IPA and a bit more like what I’d expect a pale ale to be like, not to say that’s a bad thing - just an observation. The flavor was mild, very smooth, I had heard that this beer was phenomenal,. so I may have been a bit too amped up about it when I finally cracked into the beer. I got a bottle that I may have a different opinion about once I crack into it.

This is the beer’s 666 rating. Time to watch Exorcist.

Tasting at the 18th Mondial de la bière, June 8, 2011. Honey blond, little head. Hop aroma with citrus and peach powerful and floral. Taste a little similar to the aroma, but less strong, good bitterness. Enjoyable, nothing more!

Sample at Mondial de la Bière (Montréal). Golden body with low carbonation and a thick white foamy head. Sharp hoppy taste with strong melon/grapefruit hints. Its hoppy taste hides the alcohol pretty well and ends with a decent bittersweet finish. Very good example of IPA.
