San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

After seeing the other scores this beer hardly needs another recommendation, it’s delicious, it could use a little more malt for my liking but that certainly is just me, great beer.

Aromas of summer fruits, mango, grass, pine. Centre is sharp zesty hops, followed by lush caramelized fruits, expanding back into a bitter finish. Soft carbonation, smooth mouthfeel. Excellent.

Twelve ounce bottle pored into a small tulip glass. Nice two finger head. Red/amber color. Smells of sweet malt with citrusy lemon and mango. Tastes nice bite upfront with grapefruit and pineapple. Good medium mouthfeel. Overall, I really enjoy this beer. One of my favorite IPAs ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Smakprov på SBWF12. Gulorange med gulvitt skum. Mycket fruktig doft, citrus och exotiska frukter. Smaken är mer tallbarr men även citrusen från aromen.

Bottle. Pours a orange hue with a nice off white head. Aroma is citrus with orange, mango, lemon, and grapefruit. Sweet maltiness aroma comes through as well. Excellent tasting IPA with a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Finishes with a nice grapefruit flavor on the tongue. The palate is smooth with the right amount of carbonation, not crisp but it doesn’t need to be. Somewhat sweet but hoppy IPA. An excellent choice for a nightcap beer.

Aroma: Beautiful aroma, smells of orange, lemons, apples maybe, a little hoppiness at the end, pineapple, amazing. Appearance: Really nice, lacing is excellent, head is small but that could have been a subpar pour, continuous bubbling almost like Champagne, and a murky orange coloring. Taste: Hmm, surprising, a little watery actually, but maybe thats just the lack of hops, it’s definitly light, and the aroma doesn’t come out as much in the taste. Palate: Nice, the bittery hops stay on the palate for a while and it has a strong feeling as it goes down. Overall: I’m a little surprised, it seemed like a homerun in the beginning but actually felt a little watered down, maybe too light for my tastes. Definitely worth a buy though.
