San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Received in trade from jtrockchalk, thanks for the opportunity! Pours a crystal clear golden with a tinge of orange. Surprisingly light in color. Smallish white head dissipates quickly. Smells of hops. Pine, resin, citrus, perfume, floral, some malty sweetness in the background. Taste is malty sweet with a citrus hop punch. Bitterness hits the tongue up front, finishes dry with a resinous almost mineral aftertaste that makes your mouth salivate for another sip. Medium body, resinous sticky mouthfeel, crisp carbonation. Lots of bitter hop punch and a surprising amount of sweet malt. Great Ipa, but I can’t say that I enjoyed it as much as some others I’ve tried.

Bottle courtesy of Pollack. Light golden hazy pour with a small white cap of foam. Didn’t leave much lace. Aroma was subtle hints of tropical fruits, mango and peach. Delightfully fresh smelling. Tasted of light fruit, more bitter than anything else, incredibly smooth and soft on the palate. Light fruity finish, bittersweet. Medium to full body, carbonation light. Overall a good IPA, comparable to a 2HA but lacked something to make it great.

Bottle. Lightly hazy bright marigold with a lovely cap of pure white head, with some decent lacing. Grapefruit and dank aromas that nearly push to harsh, but stop just short for the bitterness in the aroma...really nice burst of hoppiness. Hops dominate, but are a bit softer in the flavor...not by much, loads of fresh grapefruit, only a tiny hint of some sweetness and caramel, and a bit of tropical fruit, with a dank finish. Lighter to medium body, and softer carbonation. One of my all-time favorite IPAs.

(Rating #3519)

Had this at Happy Hour at Smoky Oak in Chas. Was almost the end of the cask-conditioned ale- poured very flat with no head. Bit hard to get past the appearance of it - doesn’t make one salivate like the traditional bubbles and foam topping one is used to. Flatness led to limited aroma and low score for appearance/ palate. Made up for it some with taste- very fruity, refreshing. Definitely unique. Would pair well with spicy food. 70 IBU’s. Definitely hoppy without being dry or bitter. Worth another taste- maybe tomorrow :)

amazing fresh-hop aroma full of apricot, grapefruit, and just a touch of cheese. pours a clear light yellow/orange with fizzy white head. flavor is predominantly bitter, but mild medium-thin body, crisp, lightly carbonated, with long hoppy finish.

Aroma is full of apricot and peach notes backed up by the hops. The appearance is very light golden. Taste is similar to the smell, however: the smell cannot communicate the crispness of the flavor. It is wonderfully balanced and light. It allows you to taste the hops more delicate notes due to the crisp and clean finish.

Really impressive stuff. Very clean drinking and finishing IPA with tons of pine and a resinous finish. I wish I could get it easier....strongly recommended.

A - pale yellow. Ar - Peaches, mangoes, limes, lots of fruity lusciousness. T - Delicate but with a lovely hop balance. Superb. Shows how big hop beers don’t need to be massive malt monsters, but can show poise and verve. Awesomely good beer

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2011 One of the finest IPA I’ve tasted. It’s an incredibly smooth brew that does down terrific.A wonderful array of citrus flavors, orange peel, grapefruit, peach. I tried sculpin after a stone ipa (which is also great) an sculpin was noticeably superior. Top notch.
