COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bomber. Pours golden with a white head. Very tasty IPA that has it’s own character setting it apart from other IPAs which usually have a stronger pine flavor. This leans more to citrus tastes of lemon plus maybe some apricot with a much less subtle pine flavor. Crisp, light and delicious.

Bottle with Nate. Gold with white head. West coast hoppy, citrusy and bitter. Lasting finish, decent body.

Pours a bit cloudy and light gold with just a tad bit of head. Great citrus and bubblegum aroma. Really nails the balance between sweet and bitter that blends together to leave a real nice creamy feel on the tongue.

True to the label, notes of apricot, peach, mango and lemon are detected in the aroma. There is something floral going on as well, which really elevates my olfactory enjoyment. It pours golden with a textbook soapy IPA head. The taste is very well balanced, not too bitter that it overwhelms the palate. It is a bit thin for the style, but not enough to be penalized. Sculpin is a damn fine American IPA, and should be sampled if you have an opportunity.

On tap at a local bar, hazy golden color with a small thick head that lingers the entire glass. Refreshing pine and citrus with a hoppy kick at the end. Really enjoyable, especially for an IPA which I typically avoid like the plague.

What I wish every IPA could be. Layered nose with caraway seed, pine and citrus. The palate is medium bodied, and shows excellent balance. A hit of grapefruit lingers as this is crisp and seamlessly transitions to the hoppy finish.

Tap at the Moth Dallas. Pours bright gold and clear. Nice fresh piney hop nose. Taste is slightly milder than the nose-not how I remember the bottle version. Piney bitter flavors with an alcohol kick on the end. Not bad but not as good as I wish it was.

Pine, citrus--strong and very bold for an IPA. Heavy finish. Hops fruity veering toward cloying without ever crossing over.

Pours clear pale golden with a large off-white head. Smells both piney and like grapefruit. Taste is intense bitter, lots of grapefruit and pine. Medium-to-full bodied with a slick texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Ballast Point Sculpin IPA finishes quite bitter.

Medium to medium-high hops aroma with some dark grapefruit, tropical fruit, and resiny/piney tones. Classic "Simoce" nose (polarizing to some). Gold to light orange color with some haze and medium-low head retention. Flavor mirrors the aroma with medium-high hop bitterness, medium-high grapefruit, citrus, mango, with a hint of resiny hops. Low malt flavor, which is AOK by me for a West Coast style IPA. Overall, one of my new favorite IPAs; all of the flavors marry quite well in this beer. Impressed with how the hop flavor and aroma survived in a bomber!
