San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2011 One of the finest IPA Iíve tasted. Itís an incredibly smooth brew that does down terrific.A wonderful array of citrus flavors, orange peel, grapefruit, peach. I tried sculpin after a stone ipa (which is also great) an sculpin was noticeably superior. Top notch.

Bottle; Pour is light golden with a frothy white head. Excellent retention and lacing in this shaker. Terrific juicy fruit aromas - Grapefruit, orange zest, and a nice bouquet of hops. Juicy hops fuse with a malt forward feel. The hop profile tingles the tongue. I lied. This brew is so close to the Alesmith brew. I give that one the nod though, side by side.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2011 Draught at Galbraiths Alehouse (Auckland, NZ). Poured a hazy amber/yellow. Huge peach aroma. A creaminess to the palate that balanced out the hop and brought out the caramel in the malt. Went down very well with The GrandMistress, so kudos indeed.

Best aroma Iíve had since Hopslam. Big grapefruit bitterness and piney hops. The foam is filmy and clustery, like sea foam. Nice oily finish. Really good, I hate Iím heading home away from this!

22oz poured into a tulip lass. Pours a nice orangish yellow with a nice offwhite head that is substantial and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is straightforward IPA, resinous, citrus...yum. The taste has notes of apricot and lemon, with a pungent hop flavor. Nicely bitter...and the mouthfeel is thin with medium carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, this beer is a straightforward and delicious IPA....not one to miss.

Courtesy of NorCalgrowler. Lots of citrus fruits in the nose, potent hop and pine bouquet. Smell is fantastic. Pours a nice orange color with a full fluffy white head, dissipates to a persistent thin head. Flavor is full of hop character and bitterness, honey, pine, fruit, and a good malt presence to balance. Medium body, a bit resiny and sweet, smooth with good carbonation. Overall a great beer, very well balanced with hop additions in all the right places.

Golden, amber, copper with a white, two-finger, frothy head. Smells piney, not super big (reminder that this one isnít imperial), malt comes through as toast, butter, and a bit of caramel. Standard ipa aroma and no citrus or fruit. The tastes come through in cycles. First is hops, pine leads. Then malt, mostly butter, some biscuit, a little bread, and in there is some fruit. Bit of pineapple and a tinge of grapefruit. Then pine comes back into the mix. A well-rounded ipa, that approaches drinking like a double. Multiple flavors are present. Itís not hop or malt dominant. Itís also not totally pine or fruit dominant. Very good.

A pale blonde IPA with a thick white head. In aroma, nice citrussy hops with light pinhey notes, floral, pure californian. In mouth, a smooth IPA with light biscuit malts, floral hopping, well balanced and smooth. On tap at Cajun Cafť, Jan. 5 2011.

Bottle. Pours bright orange with a frothy white head, nice thick lacing on the glass. Heavy pine and citrus in the nose, a touch of melon underneath. Nicely balanced flavor, bitter hop blast to start, lemon tartness with a touch of sweet malts, ends long with the hops lingering on for quite some time. Medium carbonation makes this smooth and drinkable. Just a well done IPA, nothing unusual, just an almost ideal example of the style.
