COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

22 oz bomber pours a golden amber color with a nice white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, citrus. Medium bodied, balanced beautifully with a hops up front and some sweet malt. Great IPA

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2012 Bomber poured into a Duvel Tulip - Bold amber colour with 3 fingers of head. Fresh citrus fruits in the aroma - Mango nectar, Apricot. Taste is a bit more complex with citrus fruit, apricot, a touch of alcohol, toffee malt. Velvet mouthfeel. Wonderful

[keg at BrewDog Bar, Edinburgh] Just a fantastic IPA, from start to finish. Inviting clear gold with a thin white head, the aromas of fruity hop come out even from a cold keg pour. As it warms, the tropical and orange aromas become even more in evidence. Very drinkable, lovely slightly sweet fruitiness before a bitter hop finish. Alcohol is there, but only just noticeable. I think this one does well because it’s so balanced, and everything is restrained – there’s nothing in yer face about this one, it’s superbly crafted [07102011]

Tasted at Ballast Point. Light orange color with a fizzy white head. Good hoppy aroma of pine and citrus. Very good piney hop taste transitioning to a smooth sweet caramel flavor.

On tap at The Dirty Truth. Pour is pale blonde/gold with a large bubbly white head. Great carbonation and lacing. Aroma is of sweet flowers with some pungent grapefruit and a bitter hops perfume. Flavor is hop juice with a sweet caramel/candied sugar finish. Taste is very much like an imperial ipa but without the alcohol burn in the finish. Quite good, but not that well balanced.

Beautiful orange copper with a pillowy white head. Gorgeous lacing throughout. I just have to sit and admire this baby. Bouqet of grapefruit and melon. Pungent hop flavor with citrus and the perfet malt balance. Lingering sweetness with long lasting bitterness. Dry finish with some alcohol warmth, I can’t put it down, it is soo good.

Sample at Stockholm Beer and Whiskey Festival 2011. Aroma has a lot of tropical fruits, mango, pineapple and other sweet aromas. Taste has a punch of bitterness but balanced by a heavy malt base with sweetness that rounds the beer off as it goes down.

Bottle (Stockholm Beer Festival 2011) - Amber in colour. Peach, passion fruit and hops in the aroma. Peach, tea, passion fruit and ice cream lolly stick (!!!) in the taste. Not bad at all.
