San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JUN 16, 2014 clear orange with a small, stable, whipped white head. fruity and stemmy with floral notes in aroma. superb, easy palate with proper carbonation and slick mouthfeel without being too full. flavors are melony with some citrus and just slight hints of dry hopped vegetal notes. a really nice beer.

22oz bottle. work trip to Wilmington, NC. took a trip to the beach and to lighthouse beer and wine(right near da beach) after work. sculpin pours a clear orange under a medium off-white head. big peachy, mandarin aroma. palate is light to medium. burning warmth in finish. very bitter and quite dry. flavor of white grapefruit and orange. not enough malts for me. 8/31/10 8/3/6/3/12

From a 22 oz bottle. Thick creamy head. Pour is a dark orange/amber color. Fruit hop aroma as advertised. Citrus hops are definitely present in the taste. Nice solid hop taste. No afterbite. Although only a 7% ABV the alcohol is well hidden. Good IPA. I would definitely drink again.

from old notes Mostly clear, orange-copper hue; fluffy, white head. Huge mango-apricot aroma, slightly dank-catty, lightly toasty. Cookie and caramel sweetness, bright and crisp fruits and acidity, almost overwhelming in the aftertaste. Huge, lingering hop tingle alongside Finnish pinesoap. Slick texture, bountiful carbonation, medium-full body. Massively hopped with wonderfully restrained malts. 22 fl oz bottle.

Near perfect beer. Nose is super citrusy, grapefruit and some sweeter orange too. Taste is citrus hops, a touch of bitter peel, and more of a malt backbone than I expected. I know people are putting hoppier, higher abv IPAís out there, but this one is just perfect.

Very consistent, right now Iím drinking this on a nightly basis. This is pretty much IPA perfection, and is pretty much everything I want in an IPA. Decidedly better in bottle than on tap. Unfortunately I canít find it in bottle anywhere other than Julioís Liquors. Will stock up soon for the summer before going back home, thinking ~20 bottles, ~$200, hope that will be enough.

Clear amber; medium frothy white head; appetizing appearance. Incredible aroma, lots of grapefruit, passionfruit. Easy to gulp down; medium bitterness, white grapefruit, slightly powdery texture. On the dry side but carrying a lot of flavor. This hits you in the same way that peeling a grapefruit releases its aromatics. Exceptional IPA.

Someone gave us this bottle at the end of the RBSG 2010 grand tasting. alexsdad06, Iím looking at you.... do we owe you the thanks on this one? Pours a light golden color with a good head and some lace. The aroma is orange and citrus with some garlic and some fresh hop florals. I reckon the flavor is nicely bitter and very fruit forward. There is a wee bit of onion in there with some light sweet malty notes there at the end. Very tasty stuff.
