San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Great IPA - had on draft at Blue Dog in PA. Not my favorite but certainly above average

Nice cloudy golden amber, about an inch of head settles to a half finger, pretty good lacing. Aroma is full of fruit and citrus. Lots of mango, pineapple, apricots, hops, grapefruit, and little honey. Taste is pretty close to the nose. Lots of mango and hop. It is sweet, tangy, and bitter all at once. Mouth feel is pretty bright, lots of "zing" from the carbonation. Smooth going down with some hop bitterness and a little sweetness in the body.

22oz bomber poured into a Bruery tulip glass. Pours a clear golden color with a one and half finger head that leaves all sorts of lacing as the beer goes down. Aroma is citrus, peach and mango with a hint of piney hops. Taste is unbelievable!! This is very well balanced beer. I can see why everybody rates this beer so high. The hops are not overpowering but deliver the right amount of kick at the end.

22 oz. bottle poured into a Becker Pint Glass. Ar: Citrus and honey notes with a very slight pine undertone. Ap: Pours a hazy gold with orange highlights. Pure bright white three finger head that takes several minutes to dissipate. Beautiful lacing. T: An opening salvo of juicy orange, grapefruit, and orchid transitioning into smooth slightly sweet malt and closing with a bite of just the right amount of piney hop bitterness and returning to very slight sweet malt. P: Highly carbonated, silky amooth, and just the right amount of body. O: This is an extremely well-balanced and enjoyable IPA. Incredibly easy to drink and full of flavor. I’d love to have a stockpile of Sculpin in the summer. Without a doubt one of the best IPA’s I’ve had.

22oz bottle from Ceebs25, thanks Brian! Pours a clear, golden-orange colored body with an inch thick, dense and foamy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is really nice with a lot going on. Pineapples, big tropical fruits, mango, apricot, florals, resiny pines, and a light caramel malt sweetness to balance, but allows the hops to shine. Flavor isn’t as complex, but really solid. Tropical fruits, peach, grapefruit, and a light melon with some florals and moderately resiny pines. The hops are balanced nicely with a slightly grainy, lightly sweetened pale malt as well as a light caramel that stays in the background for the most part. Finishes dry with a nice, fruity, slightly sweet hopping that leaves a medium, resiny and piney, floral bitterness as well as a light malt backing to balance. Lengthy aftertaste following a light-medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, a really nice IPA that I’ve been waiting to try for quite some time. The aroma is great and the flavor is solid as well. Tons of hops with a malt backing that allows the hop complexity to dominate, but provides just enough balance and keeps this very easy drinking. Love the tropical fruits in this one. Excellent IPA.

This is an unbelievable beer. The look is a bright golden orange color with a good head. The aroma from this glass is complex and unique with some citrus, mango, lemon, pine, and on and on. Then the taste is unlike anything else in the IPA world; it changes as you drink it with a hoppy and fruity taste. One of the top three IPAs I’ve ever had.

22 oz bottle from Julio’s Liquors. No freshness date on the bottle. Pours translucent gold with a 2 finger foamy off white head. Head recedes to leave a ring of foam and bits of lace. Nice fruity aroma with lots of peach, mango & grapefruit. Flavor begins with some malt sweetness, then the hops kick in. Very well balanced. Full, wet palate with surprisingly little aftertaste. Top notch.

Very good west coast IPA. Its what you expect with the style. Hops and fruit taste come together very nicely.

Bottle. I was a bit dissapointed due to all the 4.5 ratings etc etc. This is a solid brew., nothing I’ haven’t tasted before, bit it hold true to IPA form. nice floral piney aroma. A good balance of caramel matl , toffee, citrus fruits, wood an pine. A really good beer, but don’t let these guys who have only rated 1- 100 beers fool you.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into an Arrogant Bastard 0.5 L glass. There is no freshness date. Beer is hazy and amber in color. Carbonation is moderate to high with biggish bubbles. Head is thick, large bubbles, leaves some lacing as it falls away. Beer smell like funky pine hops and not much else. Smells fine for an IPA. Spicy, citrus and pine hops. Beer is not dry but rather wet. Almost no aftertaste. The hops cover you mouth. Second taste oranges, pine, lemon, some sweetness, a very good tasting beer. Medium body good connectiveness in the flavors, hits all the centers on the palate, drinkability high. Serving type: bottl
