San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On tap. Copper pour, small white head. Medium carbonation. Aroma of grapefruit, a little sour milk. Mild  palette. Dry hoppy finish. Pleasant but didn’t knock me off my feet.

Had as part of a 4 beer flight at rattle and hum in NYC. First of the flight, very well balanced hoppiness with a citrus smell and after taste. Not overwhelmingly bitter

On tap at the Hopping Pig. Golden beer with a sticky white head. Big candied orange peel nose with hints of peach. This is a big juicey, hoppy IPA with grapefruit peel, peach, pineapple and hop resin. Long bitter hop resin finish.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained white head, with minimal lacing, over a clear amber (SRM 7) body..........nose is pine, grapefruit, hints of apricot, pineapple, hint of toffee/caramel.......taste is heavy pine, grapefruit peel, hints of toffee/caramel, apricot, pineapple, finishing with a moderate biter bite.....mouth feel medium, carbonation high adding spritz. This is obviously a "Left Coast" IPA. It is redolent of hop aromas and flavors with the bitterness nicely balanced back by the malts. This is a cleansing, refreshing, delicious confection. Draught at Monkey Paw. Clear, light amber/golden liquid with firm medium off-white head. Aroma of grass, blackberries, fresh hops, mango, weed and biscuit. Very well balanced. Taste is dry and medium bitter with notes of simcoe hops, fresh hops and mango. Drinkable. Meidum bodied with medium carbonation. Stellar IPA. Very refreshing.

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2013 Bottle. Amber with a white head that laces well. Aroma of lemon, kumquat, stone fruits, pineapple. A little oily, but pretty light-bodied. Taste is barely sweet, but quite fruity, with stone and tropical fruits; lemon. Crisp finish with a fair bit of bitterness (although a little more wouldn’t have hurt). Alcohol is dangerously well-hidden. Not interesting to drink, just very good. [4]

A bunch of these about 6 weeks old, if the bb is 150 days. A little more complex than before with some citrus flowers in there with the rest. Probably better within a fortnight, but this is very lovely indeed.

22 oz. bottle- Pours cloudy golden with a nice dense two finger head that has duration. Aroma is resinous oily hops, some citrus, but mostly piney resinous hops. The taste is sweet light malt with a wallop of piney bitter hops, now this is an IPA, bold and in your face hops, yet light enough malt to be massively drinkable, there is a nice fruity character to it without it being fruity too, if that makes any sense. I loved this beer, one of the best IPA’s I have ever had, man I love beer.
