COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

This is one first class IPA,in fact Iím surprised it wasnít an Imperial. First class, fresh pine aroma, that fresh lively deep one you get with quality hopping. Flavor is pure bittering hop flavor and sensation. No pretense at balance in this one. That bittering flavor was sheer joy to experience, wonderful hop flavor coated your palate and allowed you to suck the marrow for minutes after each quaff. A hopheads dream come true

UPDATED: NOV 9, 2010 Bomber. Pours a clear, light golden-orange with one finger off-white head. Awesome aromas here. Nose of floral, pine, orange, resin and honey. Thin lace. Light carbonation.Taste similar to nose; citrus, pine and resin with a decent malt backbone. Not too bitter or hoppy. The taste is just short of the aromas. Medium finish.

Yellow-orange pour with a white head. Aroma of fruity hops-pineapple and mango. Canít wait to taste it. Taste is a sweet sticky hop explosion. Nice balance of malt, hops and flavor. A very tasty IPA. Nice aftrtaste. OK lacing. The flavor lingers well after the drink is gone. Yeah!

Bottle. Hazy golden with thin off white head. Nose of tropical fruit and pine hops. The flavour is fruit - mostly apricot, mango, melons and grassy hops. Solid malt backbone and good hoppy bitterness. I think that maybe this wasnít the freshest bottle. Some off notes in the finish.

Pours an amber orange color with life and a thin foam head. Has an aroma of grapefruit and pine with hints of apricot. Has a creamy bitter taste with the bitterness becoming more pronounced through the finish. You get a very subtle hit of sweet up front and then lots of malt on the finish. Very tasty. But I feel it is a tad overrated.

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2013 Bottle from San Roque Liquors in Santa Barbara 4/4/10. Iíve heard people talking this one up for years, and Iíve always written it of as some combination of hyperbole and homerism --- man was I wrong! This is the first IPA Iíve ever encountered that can stand up shoulder to shoulder with Pliny the Elder and not have a thing to apologize for. Indeed, this one is very much in the PtE vein (or vice versa; I donít know which came first). The nose is outrageous, absolutely enormous floral, fruity, mango dry hopped delight. The flavor is tons of pineapple, ample citrus, never too much resin, just splendid. The malts stay in the background but thatís entirely appropriate for the light-toned IPA styling; itís all about the spendid fruity hop aromas and flavors. What a brilliant beer!

Revisit Santa Barbara / San Roque liquors 8/7/12. All of the above. One worthy beer!

Seattle, Whole Foods Roosevelt 8/9/13. Wow -- finally Ballast point comes to Washington state. Huge tropical fruit nose, pineapple and apricot and grapefruit. It hurts my local pride, but this has got to be the best IPA available in Washington*.

Seattle, QFC Northgate 10/21/13. And now Sculpin has made it to the local grocery. What a treat. This is a 10 for aroma if Iíve effort smelled one. Other scores are much as listed above. Dang this drinks so easy. Certainly 4.3, maybe 4.4.

*Except for Pliny, which has been darn hard to find of late.

From tap at McLaughlins, Kyoto. Hazy golden with a thick creamy head. Intense grapefruity hop aroma and flavours. Good fruity bitterness. Very good.

Hazy dark gold pour with a bright white head. Big Earthy hop nose that foreshadows what is about to come. Great taste...grassy hops are built up by a good malt backbone. Citrus and bitter hop flavors tag along but donít overpower. The malt body gives the beer a really nice mouthfeel. I described this beer to joebussard as "A poor manís Pliny." Very good.

Moderate Citrus hop aroma with light amounts of pine and floral. Hazy orange color with a large white head. Super strong bitter taste throughout. Bitterness fades ever so slightly in the finish. Clean palate.
