San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Gets a 10 for the aroma, with perfect, full nose of Niagara Peninsula ice wine extract, peach and grapefruits and some evergreen resin. Dark, tranlucent gold, not copperish enough, with a respectable head. Flavours of tangerine, grapes, very hoppy - with a STING! - and a malty sweetness hidden behind the fruity/floral backbone, as a thin spinal chord, better noticeable at the finish. Nice resinous palate, medium bodied, ultra professionally brewed and very clever choice of name. This would be my choice to go with a bouillabaisse!

Good IPA that I have wanted to try for a while. Date says drink by August 2013. Aroma is of grapfruit, pine, grass, alcohol burn, and slight malt. Taste is somewhat transparent to the aroma, although toned down a little bit. Not bad, but for the price here in Ohio, I can find better, fresher IPA’s.

Good beer. Citrus, apricot, pine and honey. Finishes a bit too warm and sticky to make this a truly outstanding beer for me, but I will definitely try another one.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2014 Bottle pour from Whole Foods Market - Redwood City, CA. So crisp with heavy grapefruit and the right amount of honey. Ideal Sunday breakfast drinking.

Tap and bottle. Somewhat underwhelming aroma, mostly caramel and a little bit of grassy hops. Cloudy copper color. Flavor profile nearly identical to the Big Eye but the hops are turned up a little. Citrus hops, mango, pineapple, caramel. I think the most redeeming quality is the malt and hop balance.

Pretty killer IPA. Lots of floral hops with sweet fruit and citrus. Crisp and refreshing.

Had on draft at Aces and Ales in Las Vegas. The hops are citrusy, floral, with slight pine and resin. Caramely malts, a little bready malt character. A solid IPA.

Bottle pour smuggled in from out of state for me. Tasty tasty IPA here that has got it going on.

Bottle (355 ml). Thanks to Tom for this one! Clear golden/orange with a medium off-white head and heavy lacing. Aroma is intensely fruity (mango, orange, apricot, peaches, pineapple), floral hops and slight honey presence. Taste is moderately malty with fruity notes (less than in the aroma), honey and moderate but long lasting bitterness. Medium body. Dangerously drinkable and extremely refreshing. Quite complex for an IPA. Wow!

Bottle pours medium-dark yellow with white head. Aroma pine with slight citrus. Taste initial malt sweetness replaced by citrus and pine. Clean brief finish of citrus and pine. Full palate. Alcohol not evident.

I am not a huge IPA guy but this is a tasty well made IPA.
