COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Have had this beer on a couple occasions both fresh and a few months old. It continues to rate high but I was not overly impressed and though a well made beer I think this one is boosted by local support. Good hop balance that doesn’t overpower and decent nose. Well balanced and highly drinkable but could be a little thicker on the palate with the malt base. Overall a nice beer but does not live up to the Midwest IPA’s or other West Coast upper tier IPA’s.

Pours a hazy deep golden color with a thick white head. Aroma is loaded with centennial hops, citrus, slight pine, and malts. Flavor has hops, grapefruit, yeast, and bread. Has nice lacing and leaves a crisp hop finish. Recommended.

Citrusy nose of tangelos, peaches. toasty sweet malt aromas as well. Some pine resin. very full aroma. Some pleasant grassy notes. Feel is substantial without sticky sweetness finishing relatively clean for a beer this size. Good value - even for an $8/bomber.

22oz bottle -

My last great bottle of beer from Ballast Point was Dorado, which to this day is one of my all-time favorite IIPA’s. Thi is an equally amazing, incredibly tasty beer that deserves to be considered, in my mind, one of the great IPA’s I’ve ever had. Like Dorado, this tropical fruit in the aroma and flavor is simply amazing. It’s aromatherapy for beer lovers. The mangos and pineapple juice go so well with he rose petals, and lemony zing. The flavor is simply homerun. Multiple waves of juicy hop goodness...apricot, peaches, citrus, candy-like malts...some crazy pepper-like notes get picked up and grass clippings but wow. Just an intense, sensory-pleasing IPA.

22oz Bomber - NIce floral aroma with hints of mango, grapefruit, peach. Pours a yellowish-orange with a somewhat large bone white head. Medium light mouthfeel with lingering grapefruit and pine on the finish. Great regular IPA.

Was lucky enough to get a bottle of this in California from Freddie over at Beverages 4 Less. A: Pours a copper orange with white head. Decent amount of lacing as it goes down. S: Plenty of tropical fruits and citrus; there is a lot going on in the hop bill here. T: Much along the same lines as the smell, although the hops aren’t quite as strong as I was hoping, and I know that this was the freshest batch, so I feel like I was missing something, but it was the first beer of the night for me, so I don’t think there was anything interfering. M: Right in the range for the style, helping it to drink quite well. D: Very drinkable. This is where it might have helped that the hop bill wasn’t too strong in the taste. Good brew all around, and I’m looking forward to trying it again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-24-2009

What a tasty brew I picked for dinner tonight at this nice little steak and seafood restaurant. Has a nice orange color with an off white head. Smells of pine needles and citrus flavors. Maybe a bit of grapefruit and orange. Taste is a bit like pine trees. I like it. What tasty beers they make out here in san diego.

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2013 This was puchased at Whole Foods for the Thanksgiving weekend. The aroma of various fruits was present immediately after pouring. The ale poured with a huge head that laced down the glass. The pale gold color was very inviting with a sharp taste of orange peel. There is a bitterness that continues throughout the experience. The finish is smooth. This is a special IPA that luckily was available here in the East. While in San Diego on a business trip I was able to visit the brewery. Sculpin was enjoyed more than any other beer during my travels.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into a Duvel tulip. Appearance: Pours a hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger foamy white head. Excellent lacing. Smell: Pine and grapefruit with subtle notes of orange, tangerine, mango and pineapple. Smells amazing. Probably the best IPA aroma I’ve ever smelled. Taste: Pink grapefruit up front followed by orange and lemon in the middle then ending with resinous pine at the finish. There is a hint of caramel malt in the background. Aftertaste is a mix of bitter lemon peel, pink grapefruit and fresh orange. The taste doesn’t feature much of the sweetness that I expected coming from the aroma. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Goes down very smooth. Hops are very sticky. Drinkability: High drinkability. After finishing a bomber, I could see coming back for seconds. Overall: Excellent IPA overall. This is a must try for any hop head. I’ll definitely be buying more once we get a distributor down here in Fort Myers.
