COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a stemmed glass. The color is a clear orange/gold with two or three fingers of foamy white head and some thick lacing. The smell is pretty floral hops with some funky citrus flavor. This has a nice west coast IPA feel and I am impressed already. The taste is pretty sweet and pretty bitter but with a fruity citrus flavor that does give off a bit of zing. Pretty good spiky flavor that does poke with a bitterness that is not surprising but fun. Some tropical fruit I canít name brings you to a slapped back fruity flavor. The feel of this beer is a pretty smooth beer. It goes down pretty darn smooth but does leave itís mark on your mouth as it bitters the palate with some nice flavor.

22oz bottle from 16th St. Liquor in West Van. Pours a crystal clear orange with a large sticky white head. Aroma is piney hop forward citrus with tropical fruit notes. Flavour is citrus hops, pine, malt pepper, grass and spices. Finish is bitter, grassy, hoppy yet balanced goodness. Very pleasing.

Wow, this is a gem from the first mouthful. Sl cloudy golden and this head but thatís about as bad as it gets. Rich honey malts with a raspy citrus hop bite. Mouthfeel is all grapefruit, best pink grapefruit. Lovely balance of malt and sweet and bitter citrus and that dry mouthfeel with afterburps for a long time to come. The best beer Iíve had for a long time - well done

On tap at Pizzeria Uno Bensalem. Surprisingly nice light color. Aroma is pine and citrus. Very little head. Taste is wonderful. It has a very upfront hop kick that isnít overbearing, and doesnít stay thick or harsh on your palate. Brought me joy.

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2013 Holy cow, this might be my new favorite beer. Smooth and delicious with a juicy grapefruit aroma. Oozes hops, and delicious IPA flavor. Incredible. VERY smooth drinking for such a big beer. If this were more readily available, Iíd drink it all the time. Near perfection in my book. Iíve never had anything better.

20100917 Bomber from Alís of Hampden. Nice surprise finally running into this beer, which Iíve been seeking for a while. Medium golden color with small but lasting creamy white head leaving clumps of foam on the glass. Aroma is tropical with a good dose of passion fruit, citrus, dandelion, and also some lightly sulfurous garlic. Body is a bit on the light side without much carbonation to help get it across the palate, but at least itís not sweet or sticky with malts. Weedy, sharply bitter with citrus notes, and some soft underlying bread crust sweetness. Nice balance while still showcasing the hops in this quaffable IPA. Surely a beer that would be super if very fresh.

At a tasting: amazing aroma, strong guava, lychee, pinapple, peach, in the flavor the same but weaker, more citrusy and bitter - less hop flavor, good malty backbone, very good beer.
