San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle from BrewDog Birmingham; clear amber pour thin white head glorious hop aroma at pour, taste doesn’t disappoint tropical hop with mango and citrus, perfect level of bitterness, decent body quite viscous mouthfeel, quite high ABV for an IPA.

Best before May 16, 2013.
Appearance: Pay attention other breweries, this is exactly how an IPA should look. The body is a crystal clear amber, not too dark like many other IPAs, showing off carbonation throughout lazily floating to the thick and creamy white head that takes up 1/3 of the glass on the pour. The retention is average, but it settles into a creamy thick coating.
Aroma: Hops, hops, hops. The aroma is dominated by the hops, but hints only slightly at bitterness. The aroma is strong of oranges and grapefruit in good balance.
Taste: This is balanced beautifully, the malts are mild on the intro and provide a pleasant backing for the flavorful orange hops with mild grapefruit bitterness. The flavor lingers for a bit of oranges then grapefruit.
Palate: Medium bodied, oily texture, with hints of carbonation.
Overall: World class IPA, this is the epitome of a West-Coast IPA. Everyone needs to try this, it’s balanced beautifully and very drinkable. Great beer.

Light soft gold pour, thin white head. Ripe soft fruit in the nose (mango & peach) with pine wafting through the back. Pleasant, sharp bitterness. Oily and coating with light dancing malt and and hops through the middle. Creamy mouth feel at the end with a strong, but not overpowering, bitter hop finish. 7% alcohol is so well blended that it only show up now in my notes. Spend the $ and try this one.

Bottle @ Brewdog Bar, Edinburgh. Pours golden to amber with a nicely proportioned head. The nose has the expected pine and grapefruit. The taste has more of the grapefruit but the alcohol has given it enough sweetness to tame the extreme bitterness. The palate is balanced as implied in the tasting note - medium bodied a nice creamy texture and then the bitterness cleans the palate nicely at the end.

Fresh bottle from Premier. Pale gold-amber and a goodly white head with varied lace. Oodles of hop aromas showing cat pee funk and weed, plus hints of peach and lemon. Nose has an actual FEEL to it, a ’nose-palate’ if you will, opens the sinuses. Taste excites the bitter receptors pretty well, strong grapefruit peel with an over wash of some sweet pale fruit and warming alcohol. Herbal-dry palate and long mineral-grassy dry finish. Taste is not layered & fruity as dreamed about, shows a hint match-stick and lots of grass & grapefruit pith & a fighting hint of lemon fruit plus standard-issue pale malt. Fresh and snappy.

Clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma of citrus, caramel, bread, and florals. Taste is really well balanced with a nice easy drinking bitterness. Tasty stuff.

Aroma of grapefruit. Pours a clear orangish amber with a none lasting white head and no lacing. The taste is is much like the nose. Grapefruit up front with notes of honey, some pine in the finish. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, a well done IPA.
