COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pours a hazy amber with an impressive white head that sticks around. Aroma is pine and grapefruit with maybe a hint of caramel as it warms. Taste is resiny sweet. Very smooth.

Mango, pineapple, lemon and honeydew greet the nose along with some earthy and spruce-like notes that offer counterpoint to the dominant fruit and sweetness. Lightly hazy, golden body is topped by a decent, off white, fine bubbled head that lasts well and leaves some sticky lacing. Strong fresh fruit flavours up front become a bit muddled with the strong bitterness and malt sweetness. Medium body is somewhat slick in texture but this is mostly offset by strong carbonation. Alcohol is not at all apparent. Tulip glass. Cellar temperature. Bottle purchased at Hill Farmstead Brewery in June 2010.

glennmastrange (2226) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - JUN 17, 2010
UPDATED: AUG 18, 2011 Bottle. Moderate malt aromas of roasted and caramel, heavy spruce and grapefruit for the hops, light soap for the yeast, with background notes of date, toffee, pepper and solvent. Head is small, wispy white with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear light amber. Flavor starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic then finishes lightly acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, oily with a soft to lively carbonation and a moderately dry finish. The heavy dose of hops combined with the relatively medium palate makes this one easy drinking by high quality IPA.

Had on Cask, Tap, and Bottle IMO, Cask tasted the best, this is rated on experience on cask. cloudy amber/orange pour Great aroma of floral citrus, soft pleasant to drink. near perfect balance of hoppiness and floral flavors. Hands down one of the top 10 IPA’s on my list.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2014 My Bottom Line:
This artful India Pale Ale organizes sandy, citrusy hops and polished honeyed malts into a colourful array of aromas and flavors until a wooden, resinous hop bitterness rises like the dawn upon the back of the palate.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A layer of foam decorates the nearly translucent blond.
-The softly effervescent mouthfeel works wonderfully with the healthy body.
-This is very drinkable for 7% abv.
-The flavour profile is multifaceted and firm while never being boisterous. Just beautiful.
-Those lemony tips help the impression of quaffability.

Many bottles and on tap at a few places, including their Linda Vista brewery.

Serving: Bottle.
Pours a very light gold color with a small, foamy, white head. The nose potent with notes of tropical fruit, cotton candy, and big herbal hops. Fantastic! The taste has great malt and hop balance with lots of bittering hops and tropical fruit including notes of mango, pineapple, and papaya. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a long, bitter finish. Overall it is one of the best IPAs I’ve had and is certainly worthy of the high praise.

Bottle, thanks to Doodler! Pours pale orange with red and gold flashes medium off-white head, lovely lacing. Nose is floral, plus honey (malt?), pine, stonefruit, grapefruit; palate is perfectly balanced between bitter and juicy. Notes of juniper, peach, grapefruit, hints of malt, nice dry finish that keeps developing 15 seconds after swallowing. No alcohol presence. Great!

beerbill (3333) - Laurel, New York, USA - JUN 10, 2010
22 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazed gold with a moderate linen white head that lasted through two-thirds of the glass and laced the glass well all the way to the end. Very pleasant aroma of fresh grapefruit with a few notes of caramel as well. The flavor is mild caramel followed by a solid dose of grapefruit that, unlike most west coast IPA’s, is more fruity with a lesser dose of the bitter pith. Moderate bitterness at the finish is not overdone or overwhelming. Very good IPA.

Juicy apricot and tangerine nose. Clear amber, thin head. Apricot and orange peel flavor, finishing with more of a lemon zest character. NIce juiciness and bite. Well made and delicious.
