San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Medium to medium-high hops aroma with some dark grapefruit, tropical fruit, and resiny/piney tones. Classic "Simoce" nose (polarizing to some). Gold to light orange color with some haze and medium-low head retention. Flavor mirrors the aroma with medium-high hop bitterness, medium-high grapefruit, citrus, mango, with a hint of resiny hops. Low malt flavor, which is AOK by me for a West Coast style IPA. Overall, one of my new favorite IPAs; all of the flavors marry quite well in this beer. Impressed with how the hop flavor and aroma survived in a bomber!

Bottle. Fantastic nose of hops, some sweetness. Pours a golden amber with a nice frothy white foam. Fantastic taste, hops, malt, balanced and lasts longer on the palate.

12oz bottle, best by date: 7/6/12. Thin, off-white head, audibly fades to near-minimal. Clear amber color. Little lace. After hearing a lot of buzz about this one, I was excited to try it. Light crisp carbonation, dry texture. Great, powerful hop aroma. Nice bitter taste. It’s definitely an above-average IPA, and was good to enjoy with some Subway.

Bottle. Hazy orange color with a big, pillowy white head. The nose is orange, tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, seagrass. The taste is wonderfully fruity, plenty of juicy sugary fruit notes. Hop-forward. Some pepper. Slightly husky dry finish. Medium body. Very drinkable. Overall, a great IPA. A real pleasure to drink.

Just arrived in the Cincinnati market. The beer was served chilled in a Imperial Pint glass. Ar- This beer has a fantastic hop aroma. Lots and lots of mango, pineapple, citrus, citrus zest and pine in the aroma. Ap- The body of the beer is a peach coloration with a thick creamy white head. Nice head retention and thick streams of lacing mark my glass. T- A major delivery on the aroma to taste. Nice juicy pineapple, citrus, going into deep pine resin bitterness. Very brief malty sweetness that is immediately swallowed up into bitterness. P- The body of the beer is light carbonation is moderate. O- This beer is dam near like cat nip for hop heads. Fresh Sculpin is hard to beat bang for the buck. Nicely executed!

Bombs away into an appropriate drinking vessel. Don’t care too much for the murky yellowish appearance, but I do care for every other aspect of this delicious IPA. Beautifully crisp with plenty of citrus and pine--with lingering resins on the outside. This beer makes a favorable 1st impression from Ballast Point.

The pale gold draught came with a light head, and that’s the way I felt when I left. The aromas and flavors were more hoppy than malty but faily balanced. Full bodied and tasty.

It poured a light orange color with a white head. The aroma was of fresh and fruity hops, some caramel malts and floral notes. The taste was of fresh hops with floral notes, malts, some caramel, toffee and fruits. A very good IPA.

One of my favorite IPA’s, especially on tap. Dark amber/orange pour with a substantial white head. Tropical fruit and hop aroma. Same taste, extremely well balanced with well hidden alcohol.
