San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

A vicious bite but so smoothly satisfying after the sharp beginning. Hop-raisin notes trickle down the palate and fall into a symphony sweet nectar beneath the abrasive bitter crust. Gorgeous lacing with a fine head and a strong aroma. Overall,a remarkable IPA.

Tap @ Crowne Plaza San Diego: Clear gold color with a small white head. Musty grass aroma with light citrus notes in the background. Hoppy bitter flavor in full swing with a floral, bitter aftertaste. Another solid offering from Ballast Point.

Had as part of a 4 beer flight at rattle and hum in NYC. First of the flight, very well balanced hoppiness with a citrus smell and after taste. Not overwhelmingly bitter

On tap at the Hopping Pig. Golden beer with a sticky white head. Big candied orange peel nose with hints of peach. This is a big juicey, hoppy IPA with grapefruit peel, peach, pineapple and hop resin. Long bitter hop resin finish.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained white head, with minimal lacing, over a clear amber (SRM 7) body..........nose is pine, grapefruit, hints of apricot, pineapple, hint of toffee/caramel.......taste is heavy pine, grapefruit peel, hints of toffee/caramel, apricot, pineapple, finishing with a moderate biter bite.....mouth feel medium, carbonation high adding spritz. This is obviously a "Left Coast" IPA. It is redolent of hop aromas and flavors with the bitterness nicely balanced back by the malts. This is a cleansing, refreshing, delicious confection.
