San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Pour orange with a nice white head and good lace. Aroma pine, citrus, grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, light caramel, stone fruits. Taste quite bitter pine, grapefruit, citrus, stone fruit, light malt back bone. MF medium body long lingering bitterness opened up by a light fizzy carb. Super bitter outstandingly tasty hop bomb extremely well done.

Sample @ SBWF 2011. Grape. Pineapple. In other words: citrus candy. Serious bitterness. Some nice gooseberry notes in the aftertaste.

Pours a light red-orange with a fluffy off-white head. Aroma is very hoppy; grassy, pine, citrus, pineapple, some grapefruit, and a bit of caramel. Taste is pine, grapefruit, bittersweet lemon and orange peel, some bready malt flavor and a bitter hops finish. Clean mouth feel; not the smoothest ever but still quite decent.

Hazy yellow orange pour with a clean hop citrus pine aroma. Sweet and light mixed with a pine spice and some grapefruit towards the end. Leaves a bitterness as it goes down.

Bottle at brewdog. Bit disappointed with this one. Non descript hop aroma, slighty fruity. Taste is the same. Slightly bitter finish, nothing special in my opinion

I’ve concluded that I must have gotten a spoiled bottle of this brew given the other rave reviews on the site. Mine poured cloudy rust with no head. Thin mouthfeel and sharp abrasive hop biterness. No malt backbone to bolster the terroristic bitterness.

Shared this bottle at the BrewDog Bar, Edinburgh. Pours a little hazy, golden colour with a fair yellowish head. Aroma of apricot, peach and mango with barley and caramel notes. Big Nelson Sauvin character with some passion fruit also. Nice and resinous with similar flavours to nose, including peach, mango, passion fruit and an orange - apricot finish. Great malt backbone to balance this out very nicely. Moderate carbonation. I absolutely love this beer!

another fine IPA offering from So Cal. Pours an orange with a white head, nose and taste is of floral and citrus hops. Easy drinker, must be enjoyed fresh.

Pours clear copper hue with a bright white head that seems to last for quite a while. Smells of tangerines, caramel malts, grapefruit, lemon zest, pine a bit of earth. The caramel seems to mix well with the citrusy tangerines and grapefruit giving this a terrific aroma on the nose. Sweet oranges and tangerines on the palate lead the way but quickly turn to a stronger hoppy presence. Nice piney presence mixes well with the earthiness but the sweet citrus fruits and strong hops are the predominate flavors. Wonderful!
