San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

22 oz bottle purchased by my buddy who just brought a case back from PA. The aroma is very pungent - just a beautiful blast of tropical fruits and citrus. Flavor with a lighter malt profile (pale, maybe a little vienna malt) then comes a full-on explosion of papaya/mango, tangerine/citrus/grapefruit and a little pine. Extremely tasty. Full, round and creamy with moderate carbonation. Just great.

bomber shared by rudolf with me, blankboy and garthicus. Looks the part - hazy gold, quite bubbly, average lasting white frothy/fizzy head. Well-balanced aroma - lovely sweet maltiness, peach & pineapple, sweet and tart both, with plenty of hemp, citrus and lemon zest bitterness. Taste follows - again, nicely balanced, and the west coast bitterness takes its sweet time building, but when it finally arrives, itís pretty big, bitter, and acidic - good thing thereís a lot of malt alredy on the scene - somewhat strong alcohol too, just what I wanted. Solid body on this one, well-carbonated, enough hops in there to make it both acidic AND astringent, and it lingers a long time - dry, bitter, a bit alcoholic and definitely resiny - this is top-shelf stuff, big and balanced both, I want more (thanks, Rudy!!!)

Bottle from Southbay Drugs. Gold, thin white head. Nose is citrus, grapefruit, pine needles, mint. Flavor is mint, pine needles, tangerine, pink grapefruit. Nice enough, but not particularly robust.

Clear orange with a medium sized frothy white head. Aroma starts with nectarine and peach, then moves to a citrus with pink grapefruit and lemon, and a touch of spruce and cedar bark at the finish. Awesome nose for an IPA. Flavor starts with a drop in the fruit character, moving towards pine, orchid, and perfume notes in the hop column. Palate is light and drinkable, but not watery. Incredible regular IPA.

Bottle, thanks to Rudy. Appearance: deliciously hopped, lots of mango, hemp, pine, perfume, spice, mango, lemons, amazing. Flavour: Super bitter hops, pine, malt, so much hops!!!! Lots of tingly carbonation, marijuana, makes my mouth water. Just delightful, long orange skin & pine finish.

This ale is a murky light copper color with a faint touch of carbonation. The nose of this beer is complex with notes of farmers market peach, passion fruit, citrus, and apricot jelly. On mouth this is a smoothly balanced IPA with a medium body, plenty of hops, and the slightest green hop flavor. The finish is chewy and of medium length.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2010 OK, first beer from Ballast Point that i truly loved. Like the offerings from its geographic neighbor, Stone, this one is hopped to hell and back, but unlike the Emperial IPA, this IPA works. Off the scale bitter, yeah, but with complexity. Nose of sweet malts, bitter hops, and a touch of sweet ripe fruit (peaches maybe?). Beautiful gold body with a firm white head, which leaves great lacing as the beer disappears. Taste of sweet malts, bitter PNW hops, grapefruit, pine, and yeah, peaches again. Long bitter finish. And not overly alcoholic, especially given the intensity of the flavors.

(22oz bottle). Pours copper color with white head. Aroma of grapefruit, green mango and peach. Beautiful! Taste is mostly bitter with some sweetness. Surprisingly light. Light bodied with thin and oily texture. Finish is bitter. The aroma is excellent and itís quite easy to drink, but that is also part of the íproblemí. It doesnít seem to have much depth, but this is an admittedly nit-picky criticism. Overall, this is a very good beer and one that I wish I could have in my fridge all the time.

Pours a light orange with a foamy off-white head. Sharp, piney hops are balanced with sweet mandarin on the nose. Some nectarine as well. Strong, refreshing, bitter hops in the flavor - pine resin and grapefruit. Big, but clean - goes down smooth. This one is seriously tasty - Iím a fan.

7/23/10. Thanks to Tim for sharing! Piney, floral aroma, very nice. Sweet floral hop flavor with just enough balancing bitterness. This is very good!
