San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

The beer pours to a nice golden body with a tall creamy white head. Very nice lacing. The aroma smells like tangerines and Jesus. (ok, so I put that in there because I said that.) But seriously, some nectarines and apricots too. Light bit of mango. The flavor is huge for a simple IPA. Lots of mango, nectarine, and tangerines. Complex and super citrusy. The palate is nicely bitter but not overly so. The fruit flavors really balance it out. Perhaps the best regular ABV IPA I’ve ever had.

Wow, wow, wow. I’ve always been a fan of Ballast Point’s Big Eye IPA, but Sculpin takes it to a whole different level. Aroma lets you know you’re in for a hoppy ride with some sweet grapefruit notes. Pours a clean, light golden color with a standard IPA one finger, quickly dissipating head. This tasty glass of hops doesn’t make sweet love to your palate, it smashes like two kids on prom night, drunk off cheap schnapps. Sweet, then bitter, then sweet again. Sculpin is intense and delicious at the same time. I gave my wife one sip of this and she said quote "I feel like it bit my mouth"...nuff said.

On draft at City Beer in a tulip glass. Pours a nice golden color with a big white head and slight haze. Massive hops on the nose with grapefruit. Intense fruity hops. Forward hops of grapefruit, slight bitterness and massive hop flavor throughout. The fruit is evident for the entire taste, and it is a very well balanced taste throughout.

22oz bomber thanks to mar (for a great beer!). Pours a clear, deep golden body with some off-white head that leaves lots of sticky lacing. Aroma of Ruby Red grapefruit and other fresh citrus hops. Sort of reminds me of a South Texas fruit stand in the summer. Flavor of citrus hops, grapefruit, pine, floral hops and citrus zest. Medium mouthfeel with lively carbonation. Absolutely great!!

(22oz bottle thanks to mar) Pours clear yellow with good bubbles. Nose of honey, chlorine, and citrus fruit. Taste of citrus oils, grapefruit, with a very bitter finish and an oily body.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2011 Bottle. Rerating. Still smells amazing - pine, peach, apple, apricot, pear. Flavor nicely bitter more than sweet, but a really nice latent maltiness. Now I see what all the fuss is about.
