COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle, thanks to Doodler! Pours pale orange with red and gold flashes medium off-white head, lovely lacing. Nose is floral, plus honey (malt?), pine, stonefruit, grapefruit; palate is perfectly balanced between bitter and juicy. Notes of juniper, peach, grapefruit, hints of malt, nice dry finish that keeps developing 15 seconds after swallowing. No alcohol presence. Great!

22 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazed gold with a moderate linen white head that lasted through two-thirds of the glass and laced the glass well all the way to the end. Very pleasant aroma of fresh grapefruit with a few notes of caramel as well. The flavor is mild caramel followed by a solid dose of grapefruit that, unlike most west coast IPA’s, is more fruity with a lesser dose of the bitter pith. Moderate bitterness at the finish is not overdone or overwhelming. Very good IPA.

Juicy apricot and tangerine nose. Clear amber, thin head. Apricot and orange peel flavor, finishing with more of a lemon zest character. NIce juiciness and bite. Well made and delicious.

If you’re reading this, it’s too late, you already know: Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA is really something special. I had tried it at the brewery in Scripps Ranch, San Diego, CA a couple months ago, and today picked up 22 ouncer at Home Brew Mart. The two guys who came up with the recipe were actually there at the time. Poured a golden / light orange color, thick head, with clean lacing. Wonderful flavors of sweet grapefruit and lemon-doused pine. The bitter aftertaste is not as harsh as Ballast Point’s Big Eye IPA. Overall, a top-notch West Coast San Diego style IPA. This beevo is on base!

Golden in color with a thick white head. Very West Coast IPA aroma. Clean, crisp piney hop aroma fills the nose. Touch of sweetness in the flavor followed by a drying, bitter finish.

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2011 Bottle. Poured into a DFH tulip glass a hazed apricot orange color with a fluffy 2 finger head that leaves some clingy lace on the glass. This is a rather fruitful IPA to me with notes of mango, pineapple, and orange along with a citris rind hop bitterness. Starts of subltey sweet with the tropical fruit notes which is then accompanied by a building citris rind bitterness that lingers all well after your drink is finished. Some warming alcohol notes on the back end. Overall, just a wonderful IPA and in my top 5. Medium mouthfeel.

On tap at smokin joes in pittsburgh. Pine and floral hop aroma. Nice tart grapefruit taste. Somehow really well balanced for a brew that tastes like flowers. Light caramel malts. Smooth finish. Great.

On tap at Capone’s on 5/29/2010. Pale yellow, mostly transparent with a bit of head. Aroma has lots of clean pinecone hops, very similar to PTE, but a bit less dry. Flavor has lots of pinecone hops, good bitterness, some flowery and herbal character. A faint vegetal astringency and a touch of sweetness are all that separate it from PTE. Good carbonation and mouthfeel, hoppy bitterness finishes it nicely.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2011 On tap at Capone’s, consumed as Roy Halladay was pitching his perfect game on the bar TV. But I was more interested in the IPAs than the IPs and Hs and Ks. Excellent aroma on this very West Coast IPA. Dry, herbal, and astringent, with lots of pine. Sharp, with lime and tropical fruit notes, and the flavor gets richer as it warms a bit. Sculpin is a remarkably good beer, in what has been an excellent week for rating IPAs. Rerated upwards in 2011.
