San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Yellowish amber color with a whitish head, not very dark. Punchy, bitter taste with floral hoppiness. Light hints of citrusy fruit underneath. Very good IPA.

Odd duck; in some ways just an ordinary brew; but in others, a rocking draught. I really ike that they don’t follow the standard citrus/resin formula. Served again perhaps a bit too cold, still eminantly drinkable, a smallish off white head that lasts forever, and total lace. color is a honey amber. Aroma is a fragrant wet grass, hop, caramel, yeast. Flavor’s about the same plus carbonic tang accenting the high, bitter points.Body is great, ditto carbonation. Finish is a funky hop finish

12oz bottle at Brouhaha, honey gold color, with an off-white bubbly head, soft soapy, floral leafy, grassy, citrusy hop, and a hint of metallic in the nose, with some candied lemon, grapefruit peel, mild coniferous, piney bittering accents in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice flowery fruity apple skin, leafy, grassy, piney, candied lemon, grapefruit peel hop character with some soft coniferous, minty leafiness backbone, and a faint honeyed pale, toasted malt undertone, leading towards a mild candied citrus, lemon, grapefruit, orange peel, piney, coniferous, grassy, leafy hop bitterness finish. A bit disappointed, maybe because probably it was an old bottle! dont know

First of all, this is my favorite style, so I am biased for sure. But, I love the aroma of beautiful citrus. Pours a hazy, golden color. Taste is lightly sweet, lightly sour, and some, oh so tasty, bitterness. Palate is average carbonation, and a wonderful bitter, dry finish. Overall, this is what I LOVE to drink and BP does a wonderful job. I could drink this all day....and maybe I will.

A slightly cloudy dark amber color with a short lived light beige head. Fantastic aroma of pine tar, grapefruit and cotton candy. Crisp and hoppy up front, loads of grapefruit peel, very nice bitterness. Has some mild sweetness in the middle but it is quickly engulfed with that industrial strength hop follow. I just finished a Ballast Point 2XIPA but this is even better (IMO). Another very pricy addition to the local import beer shop.

Bottle. Clear amber with a medium to thick, lasting white head. Sweet, fresh aroma of grassy hops, berries. Taste is mild sweet, medium bitter. Nicely fruity and hoppy. Has a dry finish, very drinkable. Medium bodied, well carbonated.

Had a few times before, first time rating. 22oz bottle, bought at a place where it had supposedly been refrigerated the whole time. Pine, orange and tangerine in the nose. Taste is orange blossom honey, pine, tangerines along with a little of onion skin/dankness. Strong bitterness that lingers in the finish. Certainly a nice IPA, but I don’t think it is worth all the hype and $10 for a 22oz bottle.

Nice IPA, but comes off soapy. Taste is rather thin and not terribly lasting. Aroma is standard IPA fare with more sweet fruit than citrus. Light.

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2011 Pour is a coppery Orange with nice lacy sticky white head. Smell is lemon wheat grass. Taste is sweat wheaty hay with lemon and mandrin oranges. Good stuff.
