San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

(bottle). Not overhyped or over-hopped. This is a world class IPA. Hazy gold complexion with thick long-lasting head. Flavors include ripe fruits of apricot and mango. Smooth mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Refrigerated bottle set out on the counter for a little bit, compliments of sparky. Pours translucent deep golden with light orange hue and medium bright white head that dissapates quickly. Some lacing, medium body, low carbonation, and light estery aroma (mostly citrus and a hint of pine). Taste is citrus, light pine, and light bitter hop finish. Back to back comparision with Bells Two-Hearted ale, so close but this edges out two-hearted ale.

Originally reviewed: 7/23/09. I was so pumped to see bottles of this at my local store. Whenever a beer has this high of a rating, I wonder if it really is that good. This lives up to the hype incredibly. Poured this into my tulip glass. Pours a dark orange with a good inch-sized ivory head on top. Decent retention, but little lacing. The scent on this brew is phenomenal! Huge orange, tangerine, pineapple, lemon scents all over this. Absolutely wonderful smell. The mouth is crisp and wonderfully bubbly. Excellent for gulping. Flavor is big citrusy notes with some bitter grapefruit, sweet oranges, and tangy lemons. Finishes bitter and a bit on the drying side. Thereís some sweet notes in there that balance this out well. The alcohol is pretty well hidden but makes itself known near the end of the bottle. Oh yes. I could drink this all night. This isnít as bold and in your face as I was expecting. This is just an unbelievably good IPA. Freaking highly recommend.

On tap at Ray's. Clear dark golden, soft white head. Nose is bubblegum, mango fruity hop nose. Soft and smooth on the palate and really well balanced from sweet to bitter. Resinous hops with just enough malt sweetness. Big fan ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating legible on the side. Pours hazy golden straw color with a nice 2-3 finger dense off white head with fantastic retention that reduces to a thick cap that lasts. Some nice soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, mango, orange, pine, honey, tropical fruit, and light herbal spiciness. Fantastic aromas here with good strength and balance. Taste of big grapefruit, pine, lemon, orange zest, herbal spiciness, honey, and light biscuit. Good amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon, pine, orange, honey, and herbal on the finish for a while. Fantastic flavor balance and smoothness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fantastic creamy, crisp, and extremely smooth mouthfeel that is fantastic. Alcohol is extremely well hidden; with almost no warming noticed on the finish. Overall this is an absolutely incredible IPA. Huge flavor balance and smoothness. Extremely easy and pleasant to drink for 7%; with a fantastic mouthfeel.

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2012 I prefer a ipa with a bit more of a malt backbone. But it is a good sd style ipa.

Pours amber, but with minimal head. Nice aroma, with strong grapefruit overtones. Taste is well balanced, with strong hops bitterness, some citrusy flavors. Slightly bitter aftertaste. This is a very good IPA, but i just canít put it in the same class as Green Flash or Stone.

Bomber. Pours golden with a white head. Very tasty IPA that has itís own character setting it apart from other IPAs which usually have a stronger pine flavor. This leans more to citrus tastes of lemon plus maybe some apricot with a much less subtle pine flavor. Crisp, light and delicious.
