San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Very consistent, right now Iím drinking this on a nightly basis. This is pretty much IPA perfection, and is pretty much everything I want in an IPA. Decidedly better in bottle than on tap. Unfortunately I canít find it in bottle anywhere other than Julioís Liquors. Will stock up soon for the summer before going back home, thinking ~20 bottles, ~$200, hope that will be enough.

Clear amber; medium frothy white head; appetizing appearance. Incredible aroma, lots of grapefruit, passionfruit. Easy to gulp down; medium bitterness, white grapefruit, slightly powdery texture. On the dry side but carrying a lot of flavor. This hits you in the same way that peeling a grapefruit releases its aromatics. Exceptional IPA.

Itís damn good .....but....for the price there are many just as good and comparable IPAs out there with higher abv and a cheaper price.

Someone gave us this bottle at the end of the RBSG 2010 grand tasting. alexsdad06, Iím looking at you.... do we owe you the thanks on this one? Pours a light golden color with a good head and some lace. The aroma is orange and citrus with some garlic and some fresh hop florals. I reckon the flavor is nicely bitter and very fruit forward. There is a wee bit of onion in there with some light sweet malty notes there at the end. Very tasty stuff.

Draught at Stone 14th Anniversary Celebration. Light gold pour with an off-white head. I feel as though previous batches of Sculpin were a bit darker and more hoppy, but this beer still rocks. Aroma is sweet with all the fruit, grapefruit and hops. Extremely bright beer - the carbonation works great with the lemon, peach, and grapefruit that I picked up, among the other fruit flavors. The hoppy background and light body accentuate these and lead to a good finish.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2011 22oz bottle. Pours golden copper and a nice fluffy head. Amazing scent of mangoes and guava. I was ultimately disappointed with this beer, however, as the taste of this did not match the expectations provided by the aroma. There is a sweet bitterness here that I wish was featured a bit more, and there is definitely no "sting" that supposedly earned this beer itsí name.

Bomber. Looks like a perfect IPA, and smells as good as any beer Iíve ever had. Just filled the room with delightful hop smells. Itís crisp, piney, and delicious with a fairly long finish. I enjoyed every drop of this great beer, but I canít say itís worth the extremely high price tag when there are other great IPAs available for a fraction of the price.

Rating #1900. Sampled at the Bistroís 13th Annual IPA Fest on 8/7/10. Didnít rate much at the festival because pretty much every beer was a palate wrecker, but made sure to try this one first and only rate it and the one immediately after it. Pours clear gold with a huge white head. Citrusy and piney aroma, smells like a hop bomb. Citrusy hop flavor up followed by a bit of malt, then a ton of pine before a clean grapefruit finish. One of the best of the festival. Right up there with Headhunter, Hopfather and IPAX.

From bottle. Fresh piney resinous hops, mild citric rind. A bit of sweetness. Ozone. Golden amber hazy with white head. Medium body and carbonation. Great taste. Smooth sweetness with caramel. Huge hop taste from start to finish. Big bitter after with nice balance.

650 mL bottle. Gold with a small head. Citrus and resin in the aroma. More citrus in the flavour. Itís almost grapefruit juice! (But I like grapefruit juice). Not a lot going on by way of malt, but, somehow, it doesnít seem to matter. This is a fine adult beverage.

Golden pour with a thick white head. Aroma is strong with a mix of citrus, light fruits, and strong hops. Palate is really nice, just the right thickness without being too heavy. Nice carbonation as well. Crisp flavor, clean hop profile and just enough malt to balance everything out. Easy to drink and enjoyable.
