San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2013 re-rate with a more mature palate:

Pours and looks the same as I described below, but the taste is nowhere near as mind blowing. 3.6

Pours a clear light amber with a generous 4 finger head. Very citrusy aroma, grapefruit, mango. Taste follows suit, very sticky hops, very bitter. A beautiful beer. 4.3

Bottle. Golden orange pour head with a foamy white head. Grapefruit hop aromas. Fantastic balance. Good body. Loads of grapefruit and melon hop notes supported by a sturdy caramel malt backbone. A very nice IPA.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2013 Bomber from Wilibees in Petaluma. Orange pour with great white lacing on the glass. Nose is bright citrus hops - grapefruit and mango - with some resin to round it out and make it a very full aroma. Moderate palate. Taste is sharp citrus hop that is well balanced. Great beer.

What a lovely, tasty beer. Lots of hop and a gentle wash of malt. Slight amount of minerality, like stones washed in a river. Draft.

Bottle. Pours a nice golden orange color with a white head. Aroma is filled with sweet grapefruit, grapefruit peel, peach, orange and tangerine and is super hoppy. Flavor follows the nose with a touch of sweet malt, I get floral notes, sweet grapefruit and grapefruit peel, subtle tropical fruit and orange and tangerine. The body is medium with a dry mouth feel. Overall a great IPA.

A pretty citrusy IPA. Very strong grapefruit flavor - round citrusy nose. Tastes more sour than bitter. Finishes very dry. There are plenty of hops in there...but it starts off and ends with so much citrus, that it feels like a hop cameo.

Deliciously balanced IPA. Floral hops with just a hint of citrus. Crisp, clean flavors. Gorgeous dark golden color and the smell of fresh hops. One of my absolute favorites. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(22 oz. from Grain and Vine) Hazy gold-amber with a sticky, frothy white head. Aroma of big fresh citrus-grapefruit and pine over caramel and vanilla. Mouthfeel smooth, full but mildly pebbly-abrasive. Lots of sticky, sloppy lacing. Aroma of fresh citrus-grapefruit and lighter pine over caramel and vanilla with a hoppy, bitter bite. Maybe a hint of sweat.
