San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Bottle. Pours a bright coppery orange color with a small foamy white head. Nose is dark, piney hops with a carmally malt note. Palate is very slick and syrupy with a fizzy note. Flavors of piney and grassy hops with a stinging bitter presence. very fun.

Golden/amber with a frothy white head. Resiny floral aroma. Excellent IPA flavor. Great sweet/bitter balance. Malts are in the backseat with the hops driving, but the malt keeps the hops in check without being an anooying backseat driver. Quite like this one.

The aroma is delicious - crisp pale and hoppy. The beautiful pale yellow color is almost lemony in appearance. The flavor of sweet and bitter hops first comes at you first real hard like a train, but then settles so smooth and delicious on the palate which is my interpretation of its deserved high rating.

It’s already been said but this is a great IPA. Really bright citrus taste with a little metallic hops residue on the finish. Crisp with not a lot of malt. Good stuff.

Pours a somewhat clear orange with a frothy white head. Huge pine and floral aroma with potent notes of grapefruit/citrus. Very bitter, than sweet than bitter again. Citrus and spruce are noticeable in the flavor, maybe even a little resin.

(Bottle, a million thanks to Avalon68!) Pours light hazy dark orange with a medium head. The aroma is tropical and citric with notes of ripe mango, passion fruit, peach and sweet, pink grapefruit. The subtle malt is toasted, clean and quite dry - perfect for the style. The flavour is light sweet, medium to heavily bitter and light acidic. The lingering afterbitterness is complex, both spicy and citric. Passion fruit, lychee, mango, peach, rose pepper, grapefruit, some herbs and dry toasted malt. Light smoky. The mouthfeel is nicely clean and light astringent with medium, lively carbonation. Medium bodied. Fantastic!

22 oz. Clear, burnt orange with a small, creamy and mostly lasting head. Aroma of pineapple, honey, orange, mango and resin. Flavor is more tart citrus-dominated with lemon-grapefruit-orange mix, resin and some light honey toasted cereal. Big dry finish of peppery orange-lemon zest and resin. Light-medium body is slightly thin, oily, and kind of smoothly carbonated with some late frothy flareups in the mouth. Great session ale. A bit more malt on the trunk and this would be awesome.

Bottle t h a n k s again to YaMar. Pours a clear yellow beer with a nice head. Aroma is grapefruit and pine, extremely hoppy. This compares to Hopslam. Bitter dry finish, very nice beer!

Great I.P.A. This one was a bit travelled and I will definitely try it again and re-rate it fresh. fruity aromas and flavours, more diverse than the standard citrus/pine US IPA and nice underlaying maltiness.

Huge fruit/lemon nose, pours nice off yellow with off white head. Smells of depp citrus hops, and taste is complex. Upfront is mango, lemon, apricot, and orange with a quick blast that leads into a slight bittering aftertaste. Excellent IPA, unlike any other!
