San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Just a fantastic blend of hop and citrus tastes, with a smooth finish. This one lives up to the hype.

Bottle to snifter. Looks good; burnt-orange. Smells good too; nice and hoppy. Tastes very nice; one of the better IPAs Iíve come across. Mouthfeel is good too. Overall, a very nice beer (although a little pricey at $14.99 a 6er).

Shared at Jackie-Oís. Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Appearance is a hazy gold with a frothy white head of foam. Aroma is citrus, floral, and herbal hops. Not much in the way of a malt bill. Taste is medium to high bitter, and just a light sweetness. I really enjoyed this and Iím glad to see this is starting to show up in Ohio. Thank you for sharing.

So, I never tasted it because it was pretty expensive for cheapy. However, I gor a sample of 5 oz for $2, go figure and I donít even care for IPA; its there so I tried it as long as it was not over $2. Nice lacing from the start. Yes, big bitter on tap pour. Large and dull unsharp hops impacts. Tho not real sharp it is on stupid style. Looks like a pale lager fer sure.

Bottle with HUGE thanks to peteinSD! Thanks Peter! Aroma has notes of citrus, grapfruit, tropical fruits and caramel malts. Medium amber orange hue with an average white head that mostly diminished and left good lace. Flavor is medium sweet and heavy bitter. Palate is medium bodied with average carbonation. Overall a stellar IPA. Great nose and perfect in every other way. Very very good. Loved this one.

Bottle. With Pat. Last of a 6 pack purchased about a month ago. Much of the delicious hoppiness has faded. This is so good when fresh. Aroma is currently very onion. Was much more citrus and pineapple previously. Nice clean golden color with great head and solid lacing.

Bottle from half time, pours golden hue with small white head. Nose of citrus. Grapefruit and pineapple bitterness backed by light caramel malt base.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2012 On tap at the IJTBP. Pours a nice golden amber with a big fluffy white head. Aroma is pine, some citrus and floral notes. Taste is pine, citrus and grapefruit with a little bitterness before completely mellowing out. Almost no trace of the 7.0%. Excellent!

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2013 Pours golden orange color with nice lacing. Aroma of citrus and pine hops. Taste reminds me more of a double IPA than just an IPA. Big bold taste with big mouthful. Tons of piney hops and alcohol with a bitter spicy bite at the end.

12 ounce bottle, stamp on bottle says best by 070612. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy golden/orange color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is mostly pine and citrusy (mango, grapefruit) hops, along with some caramel malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like pine, citrusy (mango, grapefruit, lemon peel) and spicy hops, and some bready malt. Thereís a nice lingering bitter/fruity finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís a little bit slick and has good carbonation. This is a very good brew. But at $14.99 a 6-pack here in Ohio, I can get either Columbus IPA or White Rajah at a much better price. With that being said, Sculpin is definitely worth trying, I wouldnít turn one down!
