San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Trade via Stefanje. Thanks! A deliciously bitter IPA. I’ve had their IIPA and this may be better. Aroma of all hops and not much else. Pour was a medium to light gold with a thin white ring for a head. Taste was just how I like IPAs. All hops with just a hint of malt. Nice carbonation to carry the bitterness to the back of the mouth and bite the throat. Very nice.

Aroma is off the charts - hello super pine and resin bomb! Nice golden in color with a little white head. Flavor subsists of pine, citrus and melons with the Ballast Point dryness at the swallow. This is easily one ofthe freshest IPAs I have ever had and my favorite beer of 2008.

Another San Diego IPA home run. Poured from an ultra-fresh bomber. This one pours a clear orange-gold. A small, foamy, off-white head leaves random spots and snakes of lacing on the glass. Aromas are fresh and well balanced. Big notes of freshly sliced oranges, tangerines, peaches, and apricots rendezvous with bitter pine resin and hints of green grass, all over lightly sweet toffee malts and dry grains. The flavors just pop with bright citrus and stinging, bitter resin. The grass component is very green, helping to wipe the palate clean of sharp hop residue. Finishing bittersweet, with hints of butterscotch, this is a very satisfying brew. Medium-full bodied, the palate gets just a bit sticky after a few glasses. Awesome stuff from a great IPA master!

22oz bomber from SBD. Pours a brilliant light orange color with a crisp white head with decent retention. Smells of light citrusy hops, a bit of orangy sweetness, faintly grassy. Tastes light and citrusy, malty and hoppy sweet up front, crisply bitter on the finish. Very well balanced and 7% to boot. Light/medium body, very thin and smooth, but a little hop syrupiness as well. Crisp carbonation.

At BPB. Golden yellow with creamy white goey lace. Almost the cat piss aroma that indicates excellent nose. Light citrus flavor of hops that he malt compliments well. Very good bitter finish that doesn’t kill you. Solid bodied full and rich palate with just a hint of foaminess. A very good IPA. Fine.

By far the cleanest, most well balanced IPA I have tried. Not too heavy and complimented by a citrus aroma. Not overly hoppy but remains full of flavor. The body is solid throughout. Overall one of my top 5 beers. Try it!

Tap @ O’Brien’s. Pours clear orange-gold with a spongey white head. Great floral hoppy aroma with lemon and oranges. Clean, bold hop taste throughout. Good amount of grapefruit with tangerine, pine without resiny stickiness, and maybe a little pepper. Bittersweet malt in the finish without being overbearing. It has the hop bite and taste of an Imperial, but the body of a regualr IPA. Excellent.

On tap @ the Stone World Bistro. Pours a clear deep gold with thin bright white head. The aroma is a hit of grapefruit citrus hops mixed with a backbone of sweet maltiness. I love the way these flavors come together as noted in the first sip. The taste is crisp with semi bitter grapefruit hops and more like orange juice. The malts take a back seat to the hops but make a notable appearance bringing the bitter grapefruit citrus hoppiness closer to more like sweet orange juice. Very nice IPA.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2008 Mmmmmm. yummy. Tried from cask at Ballast Point’s 11th anniversary celebration. Nice creamy 1 finger microbubble head that quickly fades to nothing (very cask like). Pale yellow-orange color. Nice medium hoppy aroma after head has faded. Medium grapefruit hop bitterness. Kind of easy to drink. Becomes more watery after a few sips. 8,3,7,3,16:3.7 Tried again at Churchills with deftim 13 and Ivan 3/6/08. Wow! Super duper easy to drink. Much easier to drink than the younger and elder I had tonight. I have to bump the rating way up. I have spoken!
