San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2015 (Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 8 Oct 2011) Deep golden colour with foamy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with grainy malt, orange and apricots. Malty, fruity taste with notes of orange, apricots, grainy malt and a generous grapefruit bitterness in a long finish. More than medium body, with balanced sweetness. Very nice and tasty IPA, and quite drinkable for such a bold beer. Rerate: (Bottle 3 Sep 2015) Amber colour, slightly hazy, with frothy off-white head. Malty, hoppy nose with apricots, orange peel, pine needles, honey and lots of fresh floral/citric hops. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of apricots, orange peel, grapefruit, honey, resin and fresh floral hops in a finish with a generous bitterness. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Solid and well made IPA, with a generous hop character. Excellent beer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Pours an amber color with white head. Aroma is tons of citrus (grapefruit) and a bit of hops. Taste follows the nose. Grapefruit and a bit of bittering hops.

Keg at BrewDog. Pale yellow amber, thick white head. Nose is massive tropical fruity hops, slight mango, pineapple, something bready too. Palate is massive citrus hops, only the slightest hint of caramel, finish is soft but assertive bitterness. A "real" example of an American IPA, all about the hops, not sweet but very well balanced.

Nice smooth and yet hoppy IPA. Good flavor and body, but not overly sour or spicy. Good job.

Bottled at GBBF 2011. Hazy pale golden with a lasting white head. Rich hoppy aroma of grapefruit, peach and pine. Dry and very bitter hoppy flavour dominated by peach and pine. Just perfect.

Potent resiny, mary jane, piney hoppy, earthy, apricot, grapefruity, mango aroma. Resiny, sticky, piney, organic hoppy, sweet malty, fairly fruity, mango, grapefruity flavor with a sticky, organic hoppy finish. One of the more assertive IPAs out there and quite nice!

12 fl oz bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear amber with a nice fluffy off-white foam. Aroma: Strong, juicy, fruity C-hops, grapefruit, pine/resin, peppery citrus, a touch of eucalyptus?, a little peach/apricot, not much in the way of malts, a touch dusty/musty. Palate: Medium body, moderate effervescence with some prickly bubbles. Flav.: More malts – caramel, a bit brothy and mashy, still plenty of pine/resin, less of the juicy, fruity hop notes, light apricot and other fruits, a touch of eucalyptus/menthol, brown/burnt sugar; dry with good bitterness and a pleasantly balanced finish of C-hops, brown/burnt sugar and light dusty/musty notes.

Pretty nice.

Slightly hazy amber with a one-finger white head and excellent lace. Big citrus and pine hops aromas dominate, with hints of earthiness and malt. Same with the flavor profile - big bitter hops with a bite of tang on top of a solid malt foundation. Medium to full body, lively carbonation, rich creamy mouthfeel, and a crisp bitter finish. Outstanding.
