San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: SEP 29, 2009 Very dank and aromatic IPA. First thing after popping the bottle is the aroma - it just comes at you. You could smell this beer across a room - and thatís a good thing. Full of rich hop character, very piney and resinous as well as citrusey. Reminds me of Blind Pig. Flavor is sweetness that slowly recedes, with a bitter note that sticks around. Not much aftertaste, but thatís OK. Once again, BP makes another great beer! SECOND REFLECTION: This is one amazing beer. Right now, I will change it to be above Blind Pig.

My 100th IPA rating! WooHoo! 22 oz bottle, via trade. Pours a clear dark straw gold body with a nice big foamy white head that left lots of intricate lacing. Wow! The nose on this is just killer. So bright and fresh smelling, the hops are bursting with fruit aromas of tangerine, apricots, and peach. Minimal malt in the nose, but thatís just fine by me. It just smells so simple and yet so complex at the same time. The flavor is really interesting as well, thereís so much hoppiness, but the bitterness is really minimal, making it incredibly easy to drink. So much mango and dried apricot on the finish, yet the low bitterness makes it fade fairly quickly that you want another sip right away. The malt is so subtle and secondary that it really showcases the hops well. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied with a bit of doughy stickiness on the finish. The carbonation really brings out the hops as well, firm and fizzy, but itís really fine. Overall, this was one of the best IPAs that Iíve had in a long time! Iím glad that I tried this so fresh though, cause I think that this will lose alot of itís beauty pretty quick. Fantastic stuff!

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2009 Bomber. This is a fantastic IPA. Pours very clear and has the citrus aroma in spades. White peach, grapefruit, lemon, honey. I think these beers go from the far "pine" spectrum to the far "citrus" spectrum. This is far on the citrus side. Fantastic and easy to drink, I could have this all day long. Rerated 11/25/09: from 4.1 to 4.5 this is amazing beer, Huge aroma of fresh citrus hops and absolutely delicious on my tongue. wow, killer beer.

Courtesy TheCheeseMan. Gold. Modest white head. Huge resiny, grassy, lightly fruity and citrusy hops. Subtle malt background. Nicely bitter. Medium body, balanced, easy to drink. Excellent west coast hop bomb.

Pours a warm copper color. Aroma is spectacular, pine, sweet peaches, I am really liking this. The flavor is almost elegant, with some citrus notes coming through. I really like this.

Bottle... Clear golden ale with a small, creamy, white head. Great retention. Earthy, fruity aroma offers tropical and citrus fruit with additional notes of cannabis, crystal malt and toffee. Medium-bodied with a lightly creamy mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Toffee malt alongside bitter, citrusy, earthy hops. Bittersweet, grassy finish. Bottle courtesy of WeeHeavySD!

Wow!! Thanks to Bu11zeye for this bottle. Poured a clear deep golded color with slight off white head. Aroma had alot of hoppy citrus notes. This beer had a very nice heavy taste of very fresh hops, as if you just popped a hop in your mouth....medium body....VERY nice!

Thanks to Linus_Stick for sharing. Pour was a nice golden color with a thin white head. Aroma was filled with hops and just a hint of fruit. The taste was just excellent, clean, bitter, and filled with hops that lead you right to a crisp finish that left you wanting more. Definitely a beer I would drink on the regular were it readily available here in PA.

Light amber with a thin white head. Aroma is a nice floral, and piney hoppiness, very lovely aroma hops. Taste is a sharp pine, light bubblegum note, and a very subtle maltiness.
