San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Draught at Najas Place. Pours clear yellow with an average, white head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (grain, meal, cereal), heavy hop (perfume, pine, spruce, citrus), average yeast (sweat) with notes of pear, apple, and peach. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

Thanks a ton smokepot23. Pours a very pale translucent honey gold with a thin offwhite head. Looks great. The nose is very citrusy and tropical, lemon peel, mango, some piny/spicy hops, resinous. Flavor is very fruity and citrusy, sweet resinous hops, mango, mandarin orange, nice dry bitterness. Dry bitter palate. Very tasty.

Pours out a clear orangeish gold with lots of head. Taste is creamy and hoppy. Lots of spicy hops. Great IPA with, some sweetness and lots of pine. Had last year, best IPA.

I have had this many times this year and again last night. Aromas of pine, citrus, apricots and hops. Flavors of the same including a little pepper and spice. Very nice for a IPA and I look forward to future releases.

22 oz bomber from padrefan98, thanks Jon. Wow this is simply an IPA and not a double, very impressive. Pours a golden orange with an average size bright white foamy head. Aroma is cat piss, grassy hops, citrus and call me nutts but my first impression was also some peanut butter. Body is prefect, medium bodied, medium to slightly strong carbonation with a bitter finish. Flavor is citrus, fresh cut grass, slight pine, biscuit. This one is a big hop bomb for a straight up IPA, not for the nonhop hearted.

Bottle thanks to WeeHeavySD . Thanks man! Clear, clean golden pour with thick, sticky white head. Nice, strong hoppy aroma. Hops absolutely dominate this ones flavor. Mouthfeel is nice and makes the beer extremely drinkable. Absolutely loved it.

Bottle. Aroma of bitter and grassy hops . Flavor nearly entirely straight bitter hops for me, just a touch of grass, and if I press myself really hard, a slight hint of mango. Certainly highly drinkable, up there with Pliny in that regard, which I’d bet is why it’s rated so high, but I’d like more character from the hops.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2009 Bottle thanks to WeeHeavySD. Pours a clear yellow with a small white head. Aroma of grassy and garlicky hops. Flavor of bitter grapefruit and garlicky hops with a touch of citrusy sweetness and fruity hops in the finish. Certainly hop dominated. The hop profile is not my favorite, but this is a damn good IPA and extremely drinkable too. 8/4/8/5/15 (4.0/5)

Bottle thanks to WeeHeavySD. Pours a hazy amber with a white head. Citrus and pine hops dominate the aroma and flavor. Some nice malt balance, some resin in the flavor. Good stuff, glad to finally try it.
