San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

On tap at Rattle N Hum. It pours golden yellow with a thick foamy off-white head. The nose is grass, hay, nettle, apricot, peach, raspberry, pear and red apple. The taste is more subtle than anticipated: hay, grass, well hidden alcohol, lemon sherbet, red apple and resin, with some hop bite at the end. A really enjoyable IPA.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2014 A: Bright orange/amber body... has a radioactive glow to it, which might scare some people but i’ll take it as the mark of greatness... the head is a flawless 3/4 inch fluffy white cap... good retention while leaving moderate lacing on the glass (perhaps the only "flaw" in this beer) S: Heaping citric hops bombard the nose, if i didn’t know any better i’d think i was drinking an immaculate mixed drink on the shores of tahiti on a cloudless day... that being said it was dark, gloomy, rainy Philadelphia... ah, spring in Philly... back to the beer... The hops take on a dynamic character, layering bright blast of grapefuit, mango, peach, apricot, orange, passion fruit ... its like drinking a Jackson Pollock painting T: If there was an ideal citrus IPA flavor profile, this is it. Like the nose, the fruit flavored bitterness is relentless. There is enough here to explore for days. Almost no alcohol presence, and a nice, subtle sweet malt backbone keeps this beer from becoming juice. M: Smooth, crisp finish. Refreshing. Nice bitter bite. Ideal carbonation. O: I’m mesmerized by this beer. While its not Pliny the Younger.... this beer is right there and NEEDS to be respected as such. If it wasn’t for a law school final that I need to prepare for, I would have stayed all night. I’m serious... I would have been at the bar from 5pm til they carted me out drinking this gem.

Golden pour with small white head, lots of lacing. Aroma of citrus, some hops. Flavor was more muted, less of citrus and more hint of hops. An OK IPA, but I think overrated consider how high its been scored and hyped.

Tampa, Fl - Whole Foods - 22 oz bomber. Nice dark golden - light orange pour with a soft pillowy white head that leave plenty of lacing. Oh so pleasant aroma with some honeysuckle sweet accents, just a hint of spruce. Flavor is smooth, yet tangy. Pick up some mango, papaya and just a hint of grapefruit. Hope forward flavor with not much of a malty back end, but sits right on this one. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Had a few from this brewer in Hawaii a few years back - brings back fond memories - good to see them on the East Coast.

The pours a hazy amber gold with a one finger head that doesn’t give much retention. The lacing is surprsingly great. The aroma is light and I instantly think of PtE. There are light sweet hops with some citrus and a touch of apricots. The taste is pretty good, very sweet, lots of grapefruit, not a ton of hops, just enough to make it an ipa. The moutfheel is great with a rewarding lasting finish and the drinkabiltiy is great.

22 oz bomber via trade courtesy of Snojerk321. Poured into a tulip. Pours a clear golden color, similar in color to Two Hearted, with 1-finger white head. Aroma of huge citrus and fruit - lemon, orange, papaya, mango, peach, along with some pine. Taste of sweet caramel malt and big bitter citrus, nicely balanced. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, with medium carbonation. This is considered a world-class IPA for good reason!

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA Pours golden with a medium white head and good retention. Oily appearance. Aroma is grassy and floral with citrus undertones. Very nice smell. Flavor is grassy hops and alcohol with some light sweetness to offset the bitter. Grapefruit like citrus character with some light malt notes. Good shit.

On tap at the brewery location just north of San Diego. The color is more golden than I would have expected, it’s clear that there has been no attempt at tempering the hops with big malts. The bright west coast hops and their resiny character is what shines through in this delicious beer. A great representative of the area for my visit to Cali.

Bottle (bomber) from the Cracked Kettle. Hazy amber, medium off-white head. Hoppy aroma with apricots and other tropical fruits, pine needles, and some citric and perfumy notes. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Dry with long bitterness. A very well done IPA.
