San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2014 Rated on IPA day. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very cloudy apricot color with a medium sized foamy orange-white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was strong grapefruit, pine, lemon and pineapple. The flavor was bitter,t art and tangy with strong pine and grapefruit and light notes of lemon, orange and perfume. The finish was long with pine, grapefruit and orange lingering. Medium body. Well done.

Pours a pale golden, almost pilsener in color. Aroma is probably the best part of this IPA, pineapple, mango and grapefruit dominate the nose. I find myself sticking my nose in the glass in-between sips. The taste starts with a strong citric hop bite followed by some bready malts, the hop profile is the best of any IPA I’ve had (IMO). Mouth fell is crisp and refreshing, perfect summer beer, or any time of year for that matter. If this beer wasnt $11 for a bomber I would drink it daily.

Light bodied, mid range bitterness with a higher alcohol content than most IPA’s. Citrus and pine hops, and maltiness. After a few you may get ’stung’ by the Sculpin.

Bomber. Pours slightly hazy and bright orange with hints of yellow, topped with a 2-finger meringue-like off-white head. Nice retention, with rings of thick and creamy lacing left behind as the head recedes. The aroma is vibrant spicy pine, lemon and grapefruit peel, candied mango, and peach. The flavor is tart lemon peel, spicy pine and earth and dirt, and slight mango. Nice bitterness present initially and in the finish. Light to medium body and medium carbonation, slightly warming, and a bit tangy. Really tasty, I’m glad this showed up in town. [747]

Clear, dark golden pour. Great floral aroma. Resinous pine flavor, huge hop bite with a bitterness that lingers on the palate. Flavor that lets you know your drinking a beer! Freaking awesome!

[Bottle] Lightly hazed orangey amber hue, soft pillowy enduring foam. Sweet fruitiness to the hoppy aroma, orange and grapefruit, very aromatic. Plenty of hops on the palate, slightly dry orange at first followed by a mild, light biscuity malt then a big strong grapefruit finish.

Deepngolden pour with a big white head. Aroma is huge with hops and very floral and citrus. Flavor is incredible with juicy hops, fruit, and very slightly sweet. One of thr best.

On tap @ The Bruery Provisions Store. Pale orange pour with a nice white head. Lots of tropical fruit in the nose - mango and pineapple. Tastes as good as it smells with orange and other citrus - finish in quite bitter and lingered on my tongue for a while. Great West Coast IPA.

Draft at Green Leafe. Mouth-watering pour. Deep bronze with a solid foam top. The initial sniff has the same effect -- well-rounded wet hops and pine. This drinks with a definite warmth, rife with acidic citrus. Slippery, oily mouthfeel. Wicked. (#4174, 7/17/2011).

One of my favorite IPA’s. Pours hazy yellow with citrus notes up front. The palate shows deep hops with Grapefruit, citrus fruit and a nice light bitter finish that lingers but yet refreshes.
