San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Golden appearance with good white head.Mellow hop aromas. Smooth pleasant IPA. Not too complex or of great depth but enjoyable.

Tasted at Ballast Point. Light orange color with a fizzy white head. Good hoppy aroma of pine and citrus. Very good piney hop taste transitioning to a smooth sweet caramel flavor.

Cask Pull at the PP Real Ale Fest. Mostly transparent, gentle golden color with an even layer of white soapy head. Lots of grapefruit and piney hop resins in the nose, creating the initial impression of a big hop monster. Some light lemony and gentle bready malts back it up some, along with a touch of tropical pineapple spiciness. Light bodied, mild carbonation. A bit thinner and less bold than expected, especially considering the nose. The malt character doesnít seem to stand up to the hop promise too well, leaving behind an herbal crispness in the wake of a bland, grainy cracker-ish malt base. Perhaps the cask accentuates some of the malt weaknesses or fails to highlight some of the sharp hop characters without the prickling carbonation - these are the thoughts Iím left pondering. Not a bad beer by any means, but I just feel it would be a better cask beer with some more malt complexity. Finish is dry, clean, and refreshing with a lingering herbal piney hop smack.

Fresh from the brewery. Itís a heavy looking brass color with a stiff layer of white head. The initial aroma is pure citrus and hop but a more detailed scent of grapefruit and fresh pine will shine through. The flavor is a strong delivery of citrus and piney hops with just the lightest dabble of grainy malt. This ipa sure does pack a punch which makes me wonder what the alcohol percent is. Also, I didnít think this Sculpin IPA was very far off from Ballast Pointís el Dorado double IPA. I think the logo of this sculpin ipa was real cool too.

On tap at the Linkery, Sweet and bitter with lots of citrus and slight pine. It has a caramel/honey backbone that comes with a hearty dose of malts to balance the big hop kick. Very clean and fresh, its actually between a double and a regular IPA. Very tasty a fruity finish.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2008 Bottle sampled on 5/5/08: Pours a transparent orange bronze with a stringy-lacing white head. Aroma of fresh resiny grapefruity hops and a nice, pale malty sweetness. Starts with good fullness and sweet caramel flavor with a crisp, citrusy flavor and bittering hop balance toward a refreshing bittersweet finish. A very nice and drinkable IPA.

Sampled on cask at OíBriens on 11/30/06: Pours a clear hazy golden bronze with a well-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet pale malt with lots of fresh grapefruity hops. Body starts with a nice, full pale and toasty caramel malty sweetness along with lots of fresh floral piny hops toward a crisp, clean, very drinkable finish. A nice IPA.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2008 This stuff is awesome. A pretty under the radar IPA in SD from what I can see. It comes and goes - when itís here, try and snatch a pint of it. Very sharp and dry finish, great pine taste, very crisp. Leaves you wanting the next sip. A must try - usually always is at the brewery to taste

Got it on tap at the Brewery. In the past year or two I feel I have been hit over the head w/ 100+ ibu beers. OK, we get it. But this grapefruit bomb scales back a little (but not too much) to give me a beer that is a little more manageable than a 10% abv hangover-in-a-bottle. This is REALLY good beer. Great flavor!

Amazing, the smell of hops knocks you off your feet. Couldnt believe it when I took a wiff. My friend got a growler filled with this and gave me some. Truly a great beer. Nice and bitter, but not to bitter, hoppy taste and aroma really make this a great beer.

UPDATED: MAY 11, 2007 Holy mother of god! Had it on draft at Ballast Point Brewery. This one caught my attention big time! I am now an avid IPA fan...thank you Sculpin an Ballast Point. Very citrusy, excellent aroma and excellent taste. Very balanced beer, bitter yet fruity, taste like a combo of mangos and banannas. Very bitter begining but smooth fruity finish....mmmmmm excellent especially for a 7.0% ABV!! Wish they bottled it or at least brewed it more often, sucks when you want a growler fill but they are still fermenting it.
