San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Botella, thansk for sharing this 3rd best IPA on RB Plovmand! Hazy golden with a nice white medium head. Pleasant ripe fruity sweet like hoppy aroma with bit wet dog underneath. Good filling mouthfeel. Ripe fruity hoppy piney caramel sweet and bitter flavour. Fruity dry bitter finish.

On tap. This was different from what I was expecting. Not so much citrus but definitely a different fruity blend. Must be the apricot/mango flavors noted in the description. Pours a great looking golden color with a lasting foamy white head. Thick mouthfeel for an IPA. Not my favorite IPA, but a great offering.

On tap, in bottles, multiple samples; quit rating a while ago. Figured I might as well so I can keep track of what I have drank. Looks like an IPA; orange with a white head. Smell is huge on the hops, piney, floral, and grapefruit. Taste is similar, strong and crisp. A good beer that holds its own to the beer I always reach for (two hearted). However, the 10.99 / 22oz price tag that it comes with around here is not justified. Give me a six pack of two hearted instead.

Bottle shared by faroeviking and Plovmand, thanks guys! It pours a hazy golden colour with a white head. Aroma is peach, pine, earl grey tea and typical American hoppy with some sweetness to it. Flavour is peach, grape, grass, apricot and pine. Ends pine-grassy bitter.

Bottle. Pours hazy deep golden with a medium white head. The aroma has loads of exotic fruit like passion fruit, mango, pineapple, citrus, lime and caramel. Very fresh and quaffable flavour of mango, citrus, orange, passion fruit, caramel, light pine and grape fruit. Lots of exotic fruit in this one!

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2011 Bomber my bro brought back from his 24 hour FLA trip - thanks for sharing, ck1! Pours a pale orange/brown with some foaminess. Very nice lacing. Aroma is massive fruity hops -- melon, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple -- with some pine. Taste actually matches the aroma well; sweet fresh fruit, pine, and some bitterness. Somewhat sticky. For as hoppy as it presents, and as understated as the malt presence is, it does not come across as one-dimensional. Finishes long and leaves the great sweetness/bitterness mix. This is one terrific brew! Re-Rate 6/4/2011. Bomber was the last of my "smuggled from FLA" brews. Pretty much same notes as before - perhaps the best combination citrus fruity/piney aroma I have ever had. Terrific flavor combination with good blend of citrus fruit, pine and stickiness. Finishes solidly with a sweet/bitter blend. And very drinkable! Are you kidding me?? This is a really, really good beer!

On tap at Rattle N Hum. It pours golden yellow with a thick foamy off-white head. The nose is grass, hay, nettle, apricot, peach, raspberry, pear and red apple. The taste is more subtle than anticipated: hay, grass, well hidden alcohol, lemon sherbet, red apple and resin, with some hop bite at the end. A really enjoyable IPA.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2014 A: Bright orange/amber body... has a radioactive glow to it, which might scare some people but iíll take it as the mark of greatness... the head is a flawless 3/4 inch fluffy white cap... good retention while leaving moderate lacing on the glass (perhaps the only "flaw" in this beer) S: Heaping citric hops bombard the nose, if i didnít know any better iíd think i was drinking an immaculate mixed drink on the shores of tahiti on a cloudless day... that being said it was dark, gloomy, rainy Philadelphia... ah, spring in Philly... back to the beer... The hops take on a dynamic character, layering bright blast of grapefuit, mango, peach, apricot, orange, passion fruit ... its like drinking a Jackson Pollock painting T: If there was an ideal citrus IPA flavor profile, this is it. Like the nose, the fruit flavored bitterness is relentless. There is enough here to explore for days. Almost no alcohol presence, and a nice, subtle sweet malt backbone keeps this beer from becoming juice. M: Smooth, crisp finish. Refreshing. Nice bitter bite. Ideal carbonation. O: Iím mesmerized by this beer. While its not Pliny the Younger.... this beer is right there and NEEDS to be respected as such. If it wasnít for a law school final that I need to prepare for, I would have stayed all night. Iím serious... I would have been at the bar from 5pm til they carted me out drinking this gem.

Golden pour with small white head, lots of lacing. Aroma of citrus, some hops. Flavor was more muted, less of citrus and more hint of hops. An OK IPA, but I think overrated consider how high its been scored and hyped.

Tampa, Fl - Whole Foods - 22 oz bomber. Nice dark golden - light orange pour with a soft pillowy white head that leave plenty of lacing. Oh so pleasant aroma with some honeysuckle sweet accents, just a hint of spruce. Flavor is smooth, yet tangy. Pick up some mango, papaya and just a hint of grapefruit. Hope forward flavor with not much of a malty back end, but sits right on this one. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Had a few from this brewer in Hawaii a few years back - brings back fond memories - good to see them on the East Coast.
