San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Really liked this brew. The aroma was full of really big citrus flavors. Really smooth drinking, full of bubbly froth and quality malts. The citrus really kicks it up a bunch, very mangoish. Great brew.

Tap @ the OBF Buzz Tent... Poured orange with a white head. Aroma of fresh, floral, resinous hops. Slight hop bitterness, but mostly a lush hop, earthy, floral character. A little sweet, a little bit of malt to cover the lose holes. Definitely a hop bomb.

22 bottle at Smith’s in downtown Springfield. This might be my new favorite IPA. The citrus flavors are over the top. I love the orange juice finish balanced with a light sweet malt. As it warmed up a bit, the floral and grassy flavors appeared. This was the perfect break from the kitchen renovation. I asked Jimmy for something with citrus hop flavors from his private stock... and he delivered.

22oz bottle in a shaker. Pours deep golden with a lingering, lacy head. Aroma strong of caramel with underlying hops that are strong but somehow still feel like a background scent. The flavor is the same way. You can sense the presence of the hops but the smooth texture and caramel malts are more apparent. A really good beer that competes with a lot of imperial/double IPAs.

5th March 2010. Pre ZBF. Hazy gold beer. Hoppy nose. Dry palate - soft. Pleasant hops - a little spicy. Dry soft finish. Perfectly good but forgetable beer.

First night in rented Decatur digs. Welcome to Emory. Marking the moment with this promising bottle, a cool sendoff, compliments of darn1207. A bomber. Pours golden amber orange, not cloudy yet opaque. Snow white head. Attractive. Amazing nose, all floral hops and citrus fruits. Really a great smelling brew. Light-medium bodied, slightly watery mouthfeel. Grapefruit, orange, mango, pineapple. Clean bitter aftertaste. Delicious. Nice lacing as she goes. Apricot emerges as she warms a bit. A beautiful balanced IPA that doesn’t try to kick your ass.

22oz Bomber. Pours a medium golden color with a slight haze. A short head leaves some scattered lacing in my Alesmith shaker glass. Pungent hop aroma with notes of pine, bubblegum and nectarines. Body is medium and slick with a biting bitter finish that lingers. Flavor is quite balanced and reminds me of Hop Devil in that respect. Quite bitter and hoppy with a good balance of malts. Overall a really great IPA!

Bottle courtesy of tarheels86 - thanks! Bright amber color, large off white head, great lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits, pine needles. Taste is light citrus and flowers. Light body. Good stuff.

Served from bottle into a Spaten mug. Pours a nice golden color with a two finger frothy head that subsides to one finger slowly. Maintains nice lacing throughout. The aroma is comprised of an excellent sweet hop note. The flavor is of pine, spicy hops, and a hint of malt. It has medium feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this is the second time I have had this brew but the last time was prior to reviewing brews. I am glad I was able to get my hands on it again so I could relive my previous experience. You NEED to try this one if you are an IPA fan. No excuses... Believe the hype.

A hazy gold pour with a medium white head. Scent of piney hops. Fantastic fruity and bitter blend, dry finish. Wonderful and possibly my new favorite IPA!
