COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

UPDATED: JUL 1, 2015 Had this on tap a few times, and once from a bomber bottle. Hazy golden-orange color with big head. Aroma is grapefruit, a bit more sweet, tropical fruits as well. Quite complex and delicate. A sting of tropical fruits you might say: apricots, mango, passion fruit. Taste is pure grapefruit, tropical, bitter, refreshing, not too sweet. Body is rather light, but great complexity. Overall dry. A perfect West Coast IPA!

Can, Brewdog Leicester. Golden with a fluffy foam. Aromas are mellow oranges with pink grapefruit and yeast. Woody low pine with nutty cereal and sudsy notes. Flavours are sweet oranges with lemon and bready yeast. Plenty of herbal, leafy pine with bittersweet pink grapefruit and a peppery, pithy dry finish. Very well balanced and addictive.

Can courtesy of Blutt59. Thanks a lot, Bob. Light hazy golden with a white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and moderate hoppy - peach and grapefruit. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 180615

Cloudy pour. Very hoppy nose. Super frothy head dies quickly but a light layer floats ontop. Some lacing. Alcohol is not detected. Above average for this style. Aftertaste is bitter and long lasting. Bottle at the Square wine Company, Madison, Wisconsin.

PunkAGM2015 rate catchup from notes. 6/6/15. Hazy gold. Oily with soft carbonation. Big grapefruit (not so different from the Sculpin Grapefruit in many ways) and tropical notes. Fruity deliciousness. Outstanding IPA,

Subtle aroma of apricot, peach and stonefruit. Cloudy golden beer with thin white head. Light carbonation, oily mouthfeel. Zingy in the mouth. Aftertaste is grapefruit and lemon. There’s malt lurking in the background. This is a great beer, complex and subtle. Beautifully balanced, easy drinking (7%!). Really, really good.

Near perfect IPA. Pours golden with a big creme head. Aroma is overwhelmingly apricot. Sweet peach, apricot and hops. Bitter hoppiness hits you quick. Slight alcohol burn with nice lasting bitter dryness.

Keg at BrewDog, Edinburgh. Hazy orange body with a medium white head. Low carbonation. Aroma of grapefruit, orange, cannabis and sweet malts. Flavour of orange, honey and fresh, ’green’ hops. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Well rounded, very swiggable for ABV.

On draft at Marriott Marquis Washington bar, DC. Appearance is a hazy bright orange with small white head. Aroma is peach, grapefruit, yeast. Taste is grapefruit and pine early, sweet fruits after that. Palate is medium. Overall, pretty powerhouse IPA, but not surprising considering its 100/100 rating.

Clear and vibrant golden with a decent popped filmy head. Rich grapefruit and tangerine good time nose. Soft rather than overbearing sweetness. Soft clinical bitterness. Chewy orangey but not really gripping me. Carbonation is solid and certainly a step cleaner and super drinkable over the clasp of a bottle I’ve had. Finishes very clean, very simple and creamy pineapple linger. My palate couldn’t be more primed and I couldn’t be more unimpressed. Keg, Brewdog, Edinburgh.
