COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Very nice west coast style IPA. Clear and straw colored. Apricot and pine hop flavor with bite. Light toast. Reliably top tier but pricey.

This is the finest IPA I have had to date. It is everything an IPA should be and more. It costs a little more, but it is worth it.

On tap at St. Johnís in Sunnyvale. Golden orangey color with a generous amount of head. Lots of hops and citrus; couldnít really pin down what the flavors were (it was a few rounds in) but an exemplary IPA overall.

Doesnít even register when it hits the front of your tongue but blasts the back of your tongue and throat. Buttery, hoppy finish. Pretty good.

Foggy orange beer with a medium head. Aroma is huge fruity hops, orange, peach, sweet malts. A bit dipa-like really. Taste is fresh fruits, piney hops, caramel malts with a really bitter finish. This is one strong ipa with hints of double ipa. A bit too bitter to my taste actually :) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Amazing ipa. Orange rind. Mild pineapple, mango, tropical notes. Citrus, grapefruit hops. Hops dominate malt. Nice body. Great beer. Instant classic!

Clear, brilliant light orange amber with a big frothy white head. Pine and all sorts of aromatic citrus perfectly balanced by the malt. Resiny and sort of spicy woody. Crisp, light medium body with a firm but very pleasant smooth bitterness. Superb drinkability. Exquisitely crafted.

This is a great beer if you like something between an IPA or double IPA style. It is fresh, crisp and fully hopped. This beer is less malty than some of my favorites. Funny thing is that it did not taste terribly strong either, but at 7% it is definitely an IPA but perhaps shy of some double IPAs. I have no criticism. The high attenuation of this brew lends itself to higher alcohol than an IPA, but less sweet and malty product than many IPA or doubles. It seems to cleanse my palate rather than saturate and overwhelm it with sticky sweet nectar. It is very good. I donít think it deserves a 100 rating, but beauty is in the taste buds of the beholder. Iíve recently rated the Odell Myrcenary Double (9%) and Green Flash W Coast IPA (7%), which Iíve recently loved. This double is definitely not as sweet or sticky as another favorite, Great Divideís Titan IPA (7%). Several Mid American IPAs Iíve tried in Kansas and Nebraska lately have had off flavors that I believe may have resulted from wimpy to nasty tasting hopping. I keep finding myself returning to Rocky Mountain and West Coast ales that satisfy. This is a top IPA in my book, but one possessing a lower residual gravity and malty character. And the high quality hopping delivered exactly what I was looking for.

Bottled. No clear date on this. Pours a nice clear golden color with a nice frothy head. Aroma is big bold citrus, grapefruit, orange. Flavor is orange, some grapefruit, and a sweet malty biscuitiness. Well-balanced. Nice pleasant and very slightly slick mouthfeel. I feel this would be better rated if on tap.
