COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

355mL bottle BB 14121...maybe? Looks a treat in my "IPA glass"; pale gold with a tight white creamy, leaving level layers of lace on its descent. Nose packs a punch; plenty o that typically biscuity, light caramel American pale malt goodness upfront with a stack of citrus rind, stone fruit, pineapple, pine needle, cedar and passionfruit hop character. Chewy texture, good weight on the palate yet without alluding to its abv, carbonation is soft and creamy. Palate hits hard with plenty of resiny hops, bitter citrus, green stonefruits and woody spice. Not to be outdone, thereís plenty of golden syrup & cracker biscuit-esque malt to provide a decent balance. Bitterness is also very well balanced - firm without being astringent or aggressive - lingering long on the finish. Alcohol extremely well masked! Tremendously well balanced and enjoyable. This is an American IPA made the right way!

Poured from an imported bottle. Pours a little lighter in colour than the Big Eye IPA. Tropical hops aroma and grapefruit hop taste. A great hoppy IPA.

Iím not a fan of Grapefruit juice, and to me it tasted a lot like it, however, my wife absolutely loved it, will be looking for it in Colorado.

Orange-gold pour with a decent white head. Resin, citrus, tropical fruit, caramel - lots going on in the aroma but very clear, nothing overpowering. Smells good. Taste - itís piney, itís bitter, caramel, citrus, tropical fruit. Just like it smells, balanced. Good. Really good.

På fat på Broadway. Lätt vackert vitt skum. Doft av annanas, grape och lätt kola. Ljusbrun/gul i färgen. Skönt humlebeska i avslutningen. Lätt kola, ananas i smak även om citrusen dominerar.

{from notes based on a growler consumed Feb. 2012). Pours an orange-amber with a very slight haze and a smallish off-white head. Exceptionally fruity aroma, featuring oranges and other citrus fruits. Some caramel here too. In fact, the aroma seems markedly sweet. Still, this much hop aroma can indicate a rather bitter brew; such is not the case here. The flavor is actually rather tame for style since thereís plenty of sweet malt to partially counter the hop bitterness. No question, however, that this leans to the bitter side, as it should, and eventually one is left with an aftertaste consisting of hoppy, grapefruit bitterness. The premier feature of this IPA, however, is the powerfully fruity aroma and flavor. This actually tastes like it was somehow made with a citrus punch featuring tangerines. [Citra hops?] M: very smooth; medium body; light harshness/bite from 7% ABV which is otherwise not evident in tasting. O: an outstanding IPA for those who, like me, are particularly fond of a citrusy IPA.

Bottle from Regional. My 1st top 50 Beer (according to RateBeer contributors - who am I to argue) - looking fwd to it. Lots of tight little bubbles in a light golden ale. Resin is upfront and then various fruits evident. Complex - with a 4 or five citrus (after the hop resin) then tropical flavors - most obvious being passion-fruit, giving way to some subtle flavors further down the track (with of course some bitternessity!). I donít normally comment on Mouth feel - because it normally feels like there is just some beer in my mouth - but this I get - the tight little bubbles I mentioned earlier - give this a lightness on the tongue - and the beer dissolves quickly on the back of this - leaving the above tastes to linger. A quality Beer; its reputation in is intact, and the top 50 remains a good source of beer recommendations!

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 7% abv. Appearance: It has a clear golden body with lots of visible carbonation. The builds up tall and thick with a just off white head. This head quickly faded out on me making next to no lacing. Smell: There is a bid hop presence here with loads of citrusy and piney hop notes. Taste / Palate: The first few sips I mostly got loads of pine like and some citrusy grapefruit and lemon rind flavor notes. As I drank on and the beer warms more peach like fruit notes and maltiness comes out. The finish is all hop bitterness which lingers for some time. The body and carbonation feel spot on and I can see why Sculpin IPA is so highly rated. Notes: Classic West coast IPA!!!

Got it at Kroger of all places. Amber pour with a medium sized white head. Aroma is apricot, orange and peach. Medium bodied, nice carbonation. Big apricot flavor and the advertised mango is there as well. Faint hints of orange rind towards the finish. Slightly sweet aftertaste. Pretty unique in a very crowde field, I liked it a lot.
