San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Can see why this is rated so highly. Big but small, flavoursome but easy drinking, very good

Quite possibly the best IPA I've ever tasted (haven't tried Pliny or Heady Topper though). Nevertheless it's just a damn fine IPA. Very smooth, not bitter, yet has all the citrusy, piney, hoppy flavor that you love from an IPA. Great mouthfeel. Aroma is citrus. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

650ml bottle from cellarbrations super store in hami hill. Pours golden with a thick white head leaving some nice lacing. Aroma is subtle with hints of lemon citrus, apricot and perhaps a touch of mango. Body is quite light with a medium to low carbonation. Taste is lovely with lots of citrus characters with a subtle dry bitter finish. Such an approachable IPA. Smooth and crisp and just Awesome !

The smell was superb, one of the finest Iíve felt. Very fruity (9/10). The appearance is a flat yellow. Nothing special (3/5). The taste is very light, maybe too light for me (7/10). Palate leaves a hoppy & fruity ending (4/5). Overally an excellent beer, but for being honest, I expected more. Iíve tried better from Ballast Point (16/20)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tumbler on 11.03.14. A: Orange. Maybe honey malt. It smells sweet, but itís not a very strong smelling IPA. A: 1/2 finger head with a moderate pour. Hazy pale orange body. T: Orange, tropical fruit, and honey malt dominate. Pine, lemon, and biscuity malt are subtle. P: Crisp with bubbles on the back end. O: This is in the San Diego style, obviously, but itís a well-balanced IPA. It has a subtle piney bite on the back end. Overall, itís not very strong, but it might make a good entry IPA. Stone IPA is similar but seems to have a stronger kick to it as itís more hop forward.

Pour from a 12oz can. Very nice citrus forward IPA. Orange, grapefruit, citrus bitterness in the finish. Tasty.

Bottle shared with koleminer20. Aroma is dank, sweet tropical fruit, some malt, delicious. Appearance is gold-orange, opaque, white head. Taste is bitter, lemon tea flavor, bitter hops, piny, balanced. Mouthfeel is decent, crisp, decent carbonation, not too bad. Overall, itís pretty good but I expected more.

22 oz bomber. The pour is a darker orange-ish gold with a thin white head and some great lace as it falls to a soapy film. The aroma is just great. There is a lot of tropical fruits and a malty hop presence. The pineapple and tangerine really pop through, but it's not overly done. The maltiness is a little surprising here. The flavor is much more malt forward than I was expecting. The fruits and hoppiness are really relaxed, letting the malts control it. There is a light bitterness on the back end. The mouth feel is really good. The carbonation is a little light, so it does fall off of the palate pretty quick. The aftertaste is really malty and dank, not really bright and hoppy as I would like to see. Not bad by any means, but it could be better, for sure ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Drank ice cold from a bottle. Great hoppy citrus aroma. Fruity light flavour with a generous dose of hops. Really nice and refreshing.

First I noticed the awesome head this beer gets on the pour. Then the awesome fruity/citrusy aroma. And the clarity of this beer blew me away as it was crystal clear. First taste I noticed the tangerine/orange hints then on the swallow moved to the grapefruit pine bite finish LOVE this beer. Great American IPA and first beer for me from this Brewery.
